Spay and heat cycles

That would be great if you could find someone who understands the breed and doesn't want to scalp you on extra charges.

I know this was from quite a few years ago but this is what it cost us for Della, including her vaccinations and wellness check. I'm guessing it will be around $500 now.

That's amazing! I can't imagine it being that cheap! Even $500 seems cheap. I never even asked that one vet that we did the counsel with how much it would be because it was 2 years down the road anyway. But now I'm curious.

Called another vet in PA. They said the same they’d send her to a specialist because she is a risk… I’m losing my mind!
You know, it seems to me I remember when vets did everything! Now it seems all they do is a wellness check and give you a shot! Anything deviates from that and they got to have a specialist! It's maddening.

I wonder if that's why they instantly want to send you to a specialist? At this point, if you start the conversation about vWD in Dobermans all they'll remember from vet school is some story about bleeding out in the middle of surgery and not want anything to do with you?
Good point!

I did change my delivery haha as I thought it wasn’t getting far.

Just had a call from a veterinarian that’s not close, but has been around for as long as I can remember.

The vet said yes, I’ll spay her and I don’t know why no one will, she’s just a carrier. I’m going to go in for an office visit and work up. They offer a payment plan that’s reasonable including, spay, well visits, and bloodwork too.

Spay is 900. Let’s hope this is it.

Now this sounds promising! I'll be hoping it all goes well!

It looks like you found the right vet!

Thankfully our vet does everything (except crops) and I've been amazed at how reasonable it is and he's really good.

I went to pick up Howard's ashes this morning and one of the gals said she was just going to call me to go over Olive's spay on Thursday. I said I was going to suggest they go over it with me while I was there to save them a phone call when they're so busy all the time.

Anyway, they asked if I wanted different things done at the same time and one of them is a laser therapy on the incision site to help with healing faster and it was something like $30 more. I said heck yes to that and almost everything else, except the cone and the tattoo saying she's been spayed. I had never heard of the laser therapy before but if it helps with speeding up the healing I'm all for it. I know our vet would never try to sell us anything that isn't helpful.

I think the laser therapy is absolutely the right move. I bought a handheld one for Thor and used it just a couple times and people at the dog park were asking why he was moving so well because he did look great afterwards. Our clinic now has one and they love it. You've seen spays before, and I bet you'll notice a difference. It's a therapy that has a wide range of uses from arthritis, sore muscles, muscular injury to incisions. I don't know why we aren't using it more on people, although I do know of one chiropractor that is advertising it hard a few towns from here.

Well that's really good to know! I know all of the receptionists said they love it.

And on spaying, today is the day for Reckless.

Reckless is 10 now and has to be spayed due to her last two heat cycles the hormones fluctuated wildly. She had excessive thirst, crazy hungry every minute of the day, her neck thickened to where her collars barely fit on the last hole... on and on. Just wasn't "normal" for almost a month.

I had started typing a different reply and then read this post.

You is awesome! :)

I don't want to start a new thread since it would be so brief, but Olive had her spay and gastropexy today. I sat on pins and needles until they called back but everything went well with no complications so that's a relief. I will go and pick her up in the morning and I always hate that part when they are away but she's in good hands. Elroy is not happy that she is not here so I just hope they don't get too excited when she gets home.

Am crossing my finger that you don't have any complications in the future.

That girl just had a bunch of stuff done and is gonna need some rest.

I’m happy to hear all went well with Olives procedure. I’m sure it was incredibly stressful for you. Hoping for a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹

Yes dropping the off and leaving them there is always stressful and it's tough to relax until you hear back from them that everything went fine.

I gave him a CBD this morning to keep him a little calmer when she got home and that did help.

They said furniture is off limits for at least a week but she's on the couch now resting. ;) The couch isn't as high as my 4WD vehicle so I don't think it will hurt since she doesn't go flying on an off like some dogs do. I'll have hubby help her on and off the bed since that is way higher.

Glad she’s doing well! Made it to the sofa 😃

Did you have to lift her in and out of the vehicle? I was wondering how that would go because picking Pepper up isn’t always pretty. I’d be afraid after surgery too.

You can start teaching her now. ;) I had to teach Asha how to be carried when I wanted to do the RH test. She wasn't pretty about it at all, but after working on it and practicing it she would tolerate it without struggling. We had to pick her up from a short table, walk 10 feet hand her over to another person and the walk another 10 feet and that person put her down on the ground. Anyway I think I wrote about it on here but it was 2 or 3 years ago.

Oof, that would be a tough test and has to take some training since most bigger dog don't like being picked up.

I always like to take a photo of the incision when they first get home so I can watch for any changes. It honestly looks way better than I thought for the first day after surgery.
