Annie is in for her spay

And remember; they start to feel better quicker than the inside healing; so just be real careful with her in terms of running around....not using the pain meds will help her regulate herself; but once she feels good, her bouncy behavior will start up too early! The hardest part about these surgeries besides us being so nervous, is keeping the dog quiet for a few weeks! I just never want anything to 'split' open, or become inflammed, and have to start all over again ;)

After reading about Pepper (who was prone to it anyway) and then Asha had bad diarrhea for a couple of days and I had opted not to bring any pain meds home for her, I asked when we got the staples out if she'd been given pain meds after surgery and yes, she had via injection. All the info online when you look up Rimedyl and the other names it goes by is diarrhea being a side effect. If Annie is not in pain, there is no reason to give it to her.

Glad she's coming around and doing well!
Yes, Rimadyl gives my GSD horrendous diarrhea, so I don't give it to him. He gets gabapentin if needed. I swear, some Vet clinics, when I took him for his Cryptorchid surgery and tack, I'd told them NO Rimadyl. The tech told me, "We don't give Rimadyl, we give Carprofen." OMG LADY, they are the SAME THING!

Well, the diarrhea/loose stool has not subsided yet. Last night was bad. She had me up about every 40 minutes to go outside. All night long. This morning I saw one that looked a lot more formed and I was relieved. Until she seemed to be at it again. Wanted to go out. And then walking around and walking around, posing like she's going to go and then nothing. And then other times a little diarrhea.

I had given her a spoonful of pumpkin yesterday in her meal and then before bed I gave her another dollop. Just now I gave her another dollop. Hoping to get this under control.

She's been doing so well otherwise! When I let her outside she doesn't turn into a maniac so I've been letting her out on her own. No leash. This is what she's used to on our property. Sometimes I put the ecollar on just in case. To stop her if she decides to take off after something. But it seems she knows it's uncomfortable so there's no running. A lot of trotting. And I'm hoping some of that exercise is good for the poop too. I don't want to go through another night like last night. It does seem like the amount of trips outside is slowing down. But still not her normal poop. And she's never had diarrhea like this before. Hell, I don't think she's ever had diarrhea.

The other thing that seems odd is her carry this ball around. In the middle of the night last night, after going outside, she came in and went over to her basket of toys and picked out this ball. Another time she picked out another ball. But this one has become the favorite at the moment. It squeaks and in the middle of the night she started to squeak it until I yelled, Annnnie! LOL but I noticed her carrying this around constantly. This is somewhat unusual. She carries toys around but not consistently. One time she even walked outside with it before I can stop her and I thought, great, now I'll have to find it later. But nope. She walked in carrying it. Sitting on the couch with me right now it fell on the floor and she made a point to get up and get it and bring it back up with her. You know where I'm going with this. But I don't understand how that can be. It's almost like a false pregnancy issue, correct? Kind of hoarding a toy like they do in a false pregnancy? I even asked my husband if he thought that was odd and he said yes. To go on all day like this yes. Maybe I'm making too much out of it but like I said, it seems unusual.

She's still a little swollen down there and seeing it was only done Thursday I'm not going to worry about that. Even the ball I'm not really worried about. I'm more concerned about the diarrhea.

The ball fell off the couch again and she immediately went to get it and bring back onto the couch. 🤷‍♀️

Oskar had diarrhea for about a week or so, and that was AFTER I took him off the Rymadil, once I figured out that was causing the horrendous diarrhea.
I only gave one dose. And I'm not giving any more. And I just spoke with a friend of mine who's got great danes who went through the same surgery with the same doctor and she says her dog never had diarrhea. 🙄 Go figure.

Poor little girl. I think the changes in the hormones could cause the ball attachment.
That's an idea.

Tonight I gave her her raw food which is chicken, no kibble and mixed in rice and a little pumpkin again. Crossing my fingers that tonight is not another sleepless night.

I hope you all are able to get some sleep tonight....soon it will be a distant memory! Just feels like not soon enough.
She looks great, and she will be back to her normal soon....and the stool 'should' firm up....it was 'major' surgery...her insides are shaken up. I think what you are doing with the food is perfect.

You could give her slippery elm. Brio recently had a bit of diarrhea, gave him a couple doses of that in a slurry and he was fine by the next day. You stir up a teaspoon of slippery elm powder in a cup of water and give 35-60 mls 2-3x/day. Helps w/ the diarrhea but does not make them constipated, so you don't have to worry about overdoing it.

I gave pain meds for the first two days and then stopped. We watch them like hawks anyways, so I never observed her being tender or in pain. They seem to heal better and faster off pain meds.

She come home on antibiotics? This may be causing the squirts also. Get some Answers raw goat milf or some Keifer to help build her gut flora back up.

She will be fine, these are some extremely resilient animals. The biggest test is to keep her docile when the dragon awakes.

Ever try large curd cottage cheese?
Couple tablespoons seen to bind up Bonnie's poop when loose.

No, no antibiotics. Just the pain pills. And she's only had one pill from me. The day after the spay. She did get an injection of the same medication after the spay from the doctor.

Last night was a little bit better. She went outside right before we went to bed at 10:00 and I thought she went all the way to 4:15 when she woke me up. But I come to find out that my husband took her out about 11:00. I was shocked when he told me that. Very seldom is he the one that gets up in the middle of the night with her. I seem to hear that squeak much quicker than he does. I think it's a woman thing LOL just always alert to a baby's cry. 😊

But after the night before I must have really zonked out because I did not hear a thing until 4:15. So she was out at 10:00, 11:00 and then went all the way to 4:15. I fed her then, even though it was early. And then crashed on the couch with her on her pillow next to the couch and we slept till 8:00 a.m.! That's late for me! And she never asked to go out. So the diarrhea must be slowing down. I'm still going to give chicken and rice today for dinner. Until I get a poop that I'm happy with. 🧐You know how we are on poop Patrol! 😜

Now the issue is still carrying around a toy and actually doing a little whining. And I don't know why. Honestly, I really feel like she's acting like a false pregnancy. And I've never had a dog that went through it so I'm just guessing! But that's what she acts like. She cares around a toy all the time and doesn't really seem that interested in going out. I just was out with her walking around and a couple of times she went up the stairs to the house. Still carrying her toy. Like she wanted to go inside. It's not really that cold out and usually she would want to stay outside. I told my husband I think this spay changed her personality! It's just so odd and I don't think there's anything I can do about it except wait. I can't do too much activity with her for at least another week and a half. So it's mainly just letting her rest maybe taking a walk but sometimes she'll lay here and just squeak a little at me and I don't know what she wants. I don't think she knows what she wants she must be feeling a little confused. Never thought that would happen so quickly after a spay.

I've fed that before. Not to firm stools but my vet suggested it when I was posting ears. I just haven't bought it for a while but I can get some and try. Thanks!

Anesthesia does weird things to all of us, even our dogs.
Hopefully after 5 days things will be flushed out of her system.
Very likely that she does not know what she wants but she knows something has changed for sure.
The females are so intuitive regarding such things.
Just accept her toy and work with touching and petting her as she works through this phase.
As long as she is not licking and she is drinking IMO you are ahead of the game.

We also quit the pain meds a couple days early, with vet ok. These are pretty stoic dogs and the vet said if she is healing nicely on the outside, not licking or picking at it, the pain meds dont affect the inside which have no pain nerves.

Just keep her activity low key a couple weeks so she heals completely.

As far as ball possession goes, have seen and heard same...takes awhile for the hormones to level off after spay, and depending on the timing of spay- if within some time of estrus period, some false prenancy behavior may remain, each new time, hoarding and mothering toys etc.

Its harmless.

I think it may also possibly be like a toddler holding onto a comfort item, likr a nuckie, or baby blanket long after infancy. Also harmless, imho.

Outside. With a toy. :wideyed:
Tell me again the date of her last heat and the date of spay? Just curious.

I would treat the toy obsession just like a false pregnancy - take it away. Since Dobermans tend toward these compulsive/obsessive traits allowing them to practice it will only make it worse. It seems harmless and somewhat cute, but I personally think it's not healthy for them.

You can continue to give her extra attention, play some interactive games with her or teaching her a simple trick that doesn't involve lots of quick motion like "shake/gimmee paw" or doing step on a block and doing back end awareness. Anyway something to involve her with you. You can use plain cooked chicken for treats if she's still on the chicken/rice diet.

Her eyes still look 'sick'....she has that anesthesia look still.....I think it will just take a few more days, which I know; feels like an eternity!!! We want them normal again!

I'm not so sure it's a false pregnancy when she is picking different toys. With Phoebe it was just the one little duck that she treated like her baby all day and night so I took it away one day when she was distracted and she never looked back. With Annie carrying around different balls and toys it might just be a comfort to her right now while she's recovering.

I agree, but knowing how our dogs can become obsessed, is that she would continue this after recovery. It's not a big deal if @MyBuddy doesn't mind it. Just a suggestion that the longer one allows a behavior to continue the harder it becomes to stop it. If you don't mind the behavior it doesn't really matter since it's not destructive.
