Spay and heat cycles

I'm so glad it went well. We had our Sheltie spayed at 7 after taking her in and she did great, aside from tearing off after a squirrel the next morning when we took her out. At least she didn't pop a stitch.

Ok Peppers bloodwork came back at 61% for VWD. Under 50 is a concern and under 35 is a major concern. The vet said if I’d feel better taking her to a specialist they’d have what is needed if any bleeding issues arise. They can spay her, but said they’d feel better if she saw a specialist just in case and I would too.

Now I’m wondering do I even spay her? The heats are not that serious and I am able to always be with her. Is it even worth the risk for surgery. We have discussed another Doberman, and if it’s a male then we will need to spay of course. I’d prefer another female lol.

😵‍💫 I know may of you all on her have females that are not spayed what do you think?

Thank you 😃

And forgot to mention, she did not comply with the gum nick 😬 as I told them she’s fine she won’t bite, well they told me she did snap, which annoyed me because I could have helped with the test. So they got me for expensive bloodwork

What the hell are they talking about? She's a carrier, plain and simple and that is not a risk.

If she's at 61% it shouldn't be a concern at all according to those numbers quoted above. If under 50 is concern and under 35 is a major concern, she is above those numbers.
She had her ears cropped with no problems and I think they're just trying to get extra money out of you.

I am at a loss with vets around here…my vet is saying to go to another place that specializes in VWD.

My vet did say she would do it, but feels best if she went to a specialist. As they do not have the items needed if there was an issue.

Now I am scared to even do it at all. Do I have no one competent around here to do it?!

I just got a quote for the spay with a specialist… consult is 2,500.00
😳
What the heck? Is that just for a consult or is it for the consultation and the spay? Geez we went to the vet that I want to do Annie's spay and Tack for a consult and he didn't charge us a dime! I can't imagine $2,500 is just to talk to them.

That's true. They did crop her ears and didn't have a problem. I know it's not the same as opening up her belly but that should be comforting to know that she made it through that easily.

What are the extra measures they would have to take for a bleeder? Obviously extra blood. I guess it's a matter of how much they would need. Do they do like they do with people sometime where they actually will draw blood weeks ahead of the operation so that you have your own blood on hand? Or is that not something done in the animal world. This is as new to me as it is to @MichiH !

it follows exactly the pattern as if she'd been bred. So 63 days after last day of breeding would be "whelping day" and a week or two after that wanting to mother puppies (toys, slippers, something) until the lightbulb goes off that it's not really happening. It's not just mental, it is truly physical with milk, resting, wanting to nest etc etc.
And when was breeding? The last week of the heat?

After reading all this I started counting LOL Annie was done by Christmas Day. Maybe a day or two before. She did not have to wear panties on Christmas.😁 so we are like 90 days past? And I haven't noticed anything so did we luck out on a false PG? 🙏

Consult only. Unreal!

My vet much less, but now I’m questioning it all.

Agree, it is reassuring, but with my vet clearly not feeling comfortable I don’t even know.

She said supplies and I didn’t ask. Assuming blood and clotting meds? All so much to learn.

You are safe to have the spay just by the DNA results for vWD. Very few dogs who are affected even have problems so your vet is being dramatic or trying to get extra money out of you when Pepper is just a carrier.

Thank you @JanS. This is our 4 th vet 😫
Safe by you mean her results saying she is a “carrier”?

That’s what I don’t get they’re not even related vet offices!

I'm by no means a vet but apparently they aren't well informed on vWD in these breeds and Pepper doesn't have a vWD issue.
It doesn't seem like any of the vets I have been to are informed at all! It's really upsetting. I question this vet even putting her under, you know what I mean? I may leave this office and I feel like a nut! No rush to spay and I rather feel comfortable with the vet doing it than subject Pepper to any potential issues.

Also, at her gum nick test last week, done by a tech, they asked to take her back alone, I said ok no problem, as it'll be quick. Well, it wasn't and they they claimed she tried to bite, but I don't blame her as they were - in her mind going to hurt her. I told them why didn't you get me? I could have done the test myself, which was 40 dollars...They took blood and I paid way more than 40...I was taken back with that whole incident and extra couple hundred I wasn't expecting to pay.

Looks like I am off to find a new vet once again wth...
