@LifeofRubie I'm going the weekend of 24th - 25th with my friend and her dog. She was told there would be people to release for her, but she would need to catch. I wanted to go anyway, so I'll be releasing. If your CAT is after Aug 25th, I'll check back in here to tell you what I learned.
Yeah, I don't think it has to be a certain speed, but you have to have 3 runs to average a MPH and get put on the Doberman list, and you have to have 150 points to get a title. I think the 150 points comes from MPH - if you run 25 mph it would take 6 runs to get 150 points. That's how I understood it, but I'm happy to be corrected if I didn't figure the rules quite right. I'm hoping there's a photographer there for you, I want to see pictures!!!
 
We're hopefully going October 5th so very excited to hear about your experience!

That makes sense about the 3 run average. And I think understood the points thing correctly so thank you for confirming! I hope there's a photog tooooooooo!!!!!!!
 
If you're going to do 2 run a day, there has to be at least 1 hr between runs.

If they have an entry limit, I would mail in the entry as soon as they say entries are open.

Joker is going in Sept. I can't wait! He loves it!
 
I'll get to watch a bunch this weekend at Albuquerque - leaving tomorrow! I'll check back in here to share what I learned as a first-time attendee. No dog of my own (yet) but will help with my friends dog. And prolly get a good gander at how it all works. Can't be anything but fun, right?!
 
OK guys, this is the most fun I've had in ages! If your dog has any prey drive at all, you will have a blast. My housemates Dutchie's fastest run was 27.38 mph! There were over 30 dogs there, 3 were Dobermans. Every breed under the sun, of course the Whippets were fastest, and Borzoi of course...

Amazing isn't it?!!!!! To the best of my knowledge, they don't post individual event results.
 
There were 3 Dalmatians there on Sunday, but I think only one ran. There was a fun run for puppies and/or newbies between a.m. and p.m. runs and the other two might have done that. Every breed has fun doing this as long as they want to chase something!
 
Ok, guys! Rubie and I are doing our first Fast Cat on Saturday!!!!

Just two runs but I'm totally novice SO!:
- I should bring two leashes, right?
- It's just me to I'll need to ask someone to help me; is it better for me to be at the end calling and catching her or release her?
- What are they looking for in terms of the dog inspection prior to running and is that done before both runs?
- What should I be doing in terms of warm up and cool down? We'll have about 35 dogs in between in our runs so not a whole lot of time.

Rubie easily goes from zero to midnight in the yard when a bike goes by and is very well conditioned but I don't want to do anything dumb. Any tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated!
 
Oh, and so I understand the points and titling: your calculated MPH are the points used toward titles?

So for a BCAT title, you need 150 points, or the equivalent to six runs of 25 MPH, for example? No handicap as Rubie it taller than 18".

Correct... The MPH is the points you get for that run. The formula to calculate speed is: 204.545 divided by their time.
 
I'm so excited for you! I went with my friend and Reckless before I got Asha and I have to say it was about the most fun I've ever had. Your questions' answers have a lot to do with Rubie, especially the letting go and catching. If her prey drive is keen, she should not have to be called at the far end. (have you played with a flirt pole lately? Do that and put a white plastic bag on the end of it) If I remember Rubie isn't really great with strangers and one end or the other she will have to be with one. Since it's her first time she may not know what the point of the game is, but the second time you lead her up she will! The inspection is for lameness and for females checking for in heat. They actually swiped each bitch with a Kleenex at the event we went to. Reckless has super intense prey drive and would bite you if you tried to get her off the plastic bag so her owner picked her up and I released her. She used a ball to pick her up, after the lure stops and R would attack it, she would throw the ball & R would chase the ball and bring the ball back & then she could get leashed up. Releasing is best with a slip release collar, helper there may have one. Dogs run naked, so pick up is important! If Rubie is good and fit just a bit of walking before and after - I think it's going to be cold in your neck of the woods Saturday? I'm sure you've watched lots of videos already, but if not, search AKC Fast Cat You Tubes and also Lure Coursing Slip Collar if you aren't familiar with those.

You know, I was wondering about those collars as I've seen them in Lure Coursing posts on IG. I do not have one of those so we'll see. There will be another Dobe running in our group so perhaps I can ask that handler to help since they'll be more aware of Dobes peculiarities with strangers :rolleyes: she's fine as long as the 'stranger' has a calm, no-fuss energy.

It sounds like there will be a lot of newbies at this trial so hopefully they'll walk everyone through everything. And yes; cold but at least sunny! Hopefully further north hasn't gotten the massive amounts of rain we've had and it's not too soggy.

And I do believe there will be a photog there :thumbsup: I'm not looking forward to leaving the house at 6:30a but I'm pretty excited!!
 
Oh yay! Pro-photog is a joy, it's too hard to get good photos at these events from the fencing, high speed etc.

It was funny, when I took Reckless to the start and owner started walking to the other end (outside the orange fence) and she just kept her eyes on her "mom" until the operator made the plastic bag jump, then holy sh!t, Reckless forgot about Mom and wanted to get the bag and followed it to the end. The 2nd run, she didn't care that Mom left, just kept looking for the bag. Day two had 2 more runs and by the last one it was like holding a race horse in the paddock - she was spinning and pulling and walking on hind legs to go... absolutely beside herself to run that lure. THAT's when you really need the slip release collar - it's the niftiest invention!!! Your handlers there should be calm & no-fuss, so I think Rubie would be OK. We saw all kinds of dogs, some would run, some wouldn't, but all had fun. There was one Dobe there that had to wear a blindfold to the start - absolutely cray-cray when she (yup, a She) saw the field. Owner told me later she was totally chill at home, not even squirrel drive.
 
You guys weren't kidding! For it lasting all of 9 seconds, what a fun event!

When we got there and walked close to the course and saw that Lure and dogs running, she started to get amped up! It was coooold but luckily sunny and not too squishy.

Her first run, she wasn't quite sure what was going on but half way through she decided it was actually pretty fun. Second run was faster and she actually got a good mouthful of the bags at the end!

There was an older couple with a Dobe there so she released Rubie and I was the catcher.

That's it for events around here this year but very much looking forward to completing 3 runs to get an average for ranking *fingers crossed*! Can't wait to see photos, toooooo!
