Adding to the spay conversations -

marking indoors and humping is a behavior that can be trained out.
100% correct. Both of those are self-rewarding behaviors and are results of the dog not having clear boundaries or respect for its human family. Someone once asked why their dog was doing this and my answer was "because you let him".

@Ravenbird
@MichiH

I am sure you brought up the increase of incidences with spay incontinence with ya’lls vets…what were their thoughts?

I discussed with my Vet and he said he’s done a number of Dobermans with no issues. Freyja had the spay and then 2years later became urinary incontinent. The vet acted as if it was a new thing with him…

We had Glory spayed when she was 2....primarily because we had Clarke, and he was intact. The first few heats were ok with keeping them seperate, but then Clarke started getting really frantic with the pacing, drooling, and not eating. I know some people board their dogs when the bitch is in heat; but I could never do that....have never boarded our dogs.
She is 6 1/2 and is not incontinent; but I had a female years ago, who leaked before we spayed her, and my vet told me it was the way she was built...and it was common in dobes...that the way the 'plumbing' is; urine tends to pool just inside, so when she sat down, there would be a small pool. He demonstrated touching her back there, and it did drip out. I ended up having her spayed at 3 years old, and she never got any worse than the way she was prior.
I neutered Falcon already because he was cryptorchid...and they convinced me he would develop cancer from it. I waited until he was 18 months though. Funny; they asked if I wanted to 'see' it when I picked him up, of course I did! My husband walked away as they brought out the testicles they removed...one real large, and the other the size of an almond :p My husband couldn't handle it :rofl:

I had to hit funny because of that. Guys seem to take things like that so personally. LOL

I agree. The only thing I did consider was taking Olive for a little trip to an Air BNB or stay at a hotel during the prime time but I'm not sure either of those places would be happy to have you bring a bitch in heat.

Same @JanS my thoughts too 😂

I thought about it, but never did bring it up. I figured it didn't matter what they thought and they can't do the surgery any differently to help prevent it. I had a hard time making the commitment and didn't want any more excuses to back out. And. your experience here and how you seem to have found a reasonable cure/supplement I figured if I have to go down that road I will. It was a big reason I put off spaying, but weighed the pros & cons and decided a discussion with the vet wouldn't change anything.
