It's a Dobie thing!

Yes! He really is! He's a stinker and needs some more training but he's super sweet. He usually only jumps the baby gate when I'm leaving, he wants to go too. He sits in the front seat of my car (kids have the back seat) and has shockingly not ate the seats while I shop/go in library, etc.
OH, that is the fear isn't it? To come back to damaged upholstery? Man, that would suck!

We actually, amazingly and perhaps unadvisedly, trusted little Oji in our "new" car for like 3 or 4 minutes on our road trip recently. This is our first car with leather too. We went into a SubWay restaurant to allow us to decide what to order. I came back out and Oji wasn't spazzing out and most importantly didn't seem to have bitten the headrests right in front of his face. I did, one time, see him bite the inside of the door of our other car when I simply shut him in there and walked a step away from the car.

Yes that is absolutely the fear!!! I had a Brittany spazz out and eat a sofa. So I worry about it. So far Neegan is just clingy and not true separation anxiety. So that's good. However I don't leave much and he has two other dogs to love when I leave. They're all jerks though. Lol.

LOL, where do we begin.

Albert does the slapping feet and a loud grunt when he lays down to get comfy.

They nose poke, especially in the butt.

They must come to the bathroom with you.

They're always watching you and what you're doing.

They're talkers when they play with each other. Not barking, but making their own Doberman language.

They'll melt in the rain.
About that nose poke in the butt, Mauser does that too! Only when he does it he also does it with a nip and nips my butt! Is that an abnormal butt nudge?? Its quite embarassing, especially because he does it at the dog park all the time!

I remember reading about this in a book on Dobermans years ago.

I imagine Oji would take joy in butt-nipping if we let him.

If the person getting nipped there lets out a surprised vocalization, I bet it excites the Dobe and can make it more rewarding for them. :)

If he does it at the park he's probably too excited. Its his way of saying 'let's play!' Like an excited greeting! They are very oral and vocal. They taste and experience the world with their mouth and they communicate with their mouth as well. Sometimes it’s vocalized barking or howling and other times it is nipping or biting.
Obedience training is always a great solution to butt nipping. Just decide what you would prefer him to do and begin to train him to do exactly that.

okay thanks so much! yea I was not sure what he was trying to tell me by doing this, it hurts and I immediately try to redirect him to play with the other dogs instead of me! LOL!
But yes, we are starting obedience courses really really soon! it's just hard because I work weekends too and most classes are on a Saturday.

Nero finally was allowed to snuggle this morning because he wasnt trying to chew every available limb. I cant wait for him to always be like that!
I can't wait for Mauser to be like this! He just turned 5 months on the 17th and he thinks I want to play with him on the bed instead of snuggle.

Kaizer has nipped a few butts. For him, it's all play. He is a veryyyyy mouthy boy. Even at 9 months, we're still working on it. He either does it for attention or to play.

I've found ignoring him works best for the attention seeking in particular. For the play biting, that's my que he needs some exercise. Bored/under exercised dobies are big time trouble makers.

Oh yes – the water thing. Our last Dobe would usually come toward us (after making a big water mess on the floor of course) and just give a quick touch to our body after drinking. I chalked it up to him wanting to reestablish a scent connection, or at least a connection, with us after having his nose in the water.
There was a video on YouTube of a Dobe who knew how to wipe his mouth after drinking water. It was part of our initial research but I can't find it now.

A few of our dogs would wipe their mouths off on either the furniture or our leg after eating or drinking but I think I'd rather wipe them off for them. LOL

Albert has a special soft cushion that he sucks on so he proudly carries it around with him and that's pretty much all he will suck on. He started it as a baby when he came home and I can only assume it was because the texture is much like it would be to suckle on his mom.
This would be such a great tip for a new puppy owner. I would definitely do this. Not only is it super cute, comforting for the dog, but it's a functional way to control/limit their sucking activity.

Do your Dobes "blow their coats," as I once heard it called - suddenly shed lots of hair - at the vet's, groomer's, or in other stressful - or exciting - situations?
Kaiser definitely blew his coat in his early months of growth. Between 3-6 months I think. Those were the days of endless sweeping! It's much more under control now thank heavens!

Oh same here. Not so much Della but Albert watches everything that flies over. There was an Air Force jet doing a touch and go here at this airport and wow did that confuse him when the sound was so far behind the jet and so loud. I would swear he was having a convolution if I didn't know he was just looking back and forth so fast trying to find it. LOL
Yes! It's almost as if they are wondering what's up there. So smart and always thinking aren't they!

Jax does the exact same thing. It cracks me up when we are out early in the morning (and it's a little cold), the grass is slightly damp, or if we are on an un-carpeted surface inside. He doesn't like to do "down" in those situations, so he just does the big floor slap and looks at me like, "Isn't it okay that you can see that I know what I'm supposed to do? I just don't like doing it in this particular spot!"
Love that dang kid.
Isn't it just sooo endearing! I personally think that Kaiser does not like to be dirty. Bless him if he truly became fussy that way because of how we are!

I swear he's made of stone ;) He blocks the passageway and looks just like a solid statue, it's unbelievable! Lol
That's another Dobe trait! K just freezes in one position when i leave the room and when I return he is still standing there. I take that as a teachable moment and tell him "good stay". At which point he'lol start moving again. What characters.

Let us know if that works! :)

Does anyone else have Doberman who will not leave things upright? I mean smaller things like stuff on the coffee table. I always stand things like the Dremel or hand lotion up and he just can't resist knocking them over, then he leaves it alone. Lately it's been a can of bug repellent that hubby leaves on the ledge in the garage and every singe time he goes by he knocks it over and keeps going on his merry way.
Oh and the other night I set a bottle of beer down on the coffee table long enough to fix the blankets on the couch and guess what? LOL

How very strange  No, can't say I do. Does he poke it with his nose? Have you tried standing it upright again to see if he'll knock it back over straightaway?
We don't really have a coffee table or anything for him to knock anything over. But now you've got me intrigued. You'd think he's just investigating and knocks it over by accident but then maybe he prefers it laying down?!?!
