It's a Dobie thing!

I'm starting a thread, sorry if there is one, where we can talk about things that our dobies do that most dogs don't. In my first week of beginners Rally class when I asked Gretchen to lay down she brought both paws up in the air and slapped the ground (like she always does, I thought it was just a Gretchen thing). My instructor started laughing and she said "That is such a Doberman thing, they all slap the ground when they lay down!"

Feel free to add your own "It's a dobie thing" to the list!

LOL, where do we begin.

Albert does the slapping feet and a loud grunt when he lays down to get comfy.

They nose poke, especially in the butt.

They must come to the bathroom with you.

They're always watching you and what you're doing.

They're talkers when they play with each other. Not barking, but making their own Doberman language.

They'll melt in the rain.

Archer ground pounds for his down too.

A few (of my favorite) for the list..
1. Nose pokes
2. Flopping over on you as they lie down next to you
3. Grunts and sighs
4. Room stalking
5. expressing themselves with their feet
6. Doberlean
7. Very "chatty"

Tailgating you around the house in hopes of some fun. Tailgating so close that if you wear flip-flops around the house they sometimes step on the back of one as you try to bring your leg forward.
[DOUBLEPOST=1424290541,1424289922][/DOUBLEPOST]WHINING. I know many dogs tend to whine, but the Doberman could be on the podium at the Olympics. You know, if there were a dog whining competition in the Olympics.

LICKING. Even to the point of removing their own skin if you don't give them the activity they need. Fortunately, they seem to respond well to a firm "that's enough licking" command. Ceasing the whining when commanded? NOT so much.

So, you want to be a Doberman owner, eh?

We've had that happen with snowshoes or skis and that will take you down in a hurry.

We have a blanket sucker too. He has to do it every night to put himself to sleep.

Wow you nailed that one in regards to a cpl of mine... Lol

I don't know if this is a dobe thing or a Denali thing. But he has done quite a few times with strangers. They will ask if they can say hello. He sits then lays down on his back with his tummy up so he can get a belly scratch.

It's funny to see how many of these Rex does. He also likes to do a perimeter check when he's inside the house and look out all the windows he can. He's especially happy now that's he's learned how to move the blinds out of the way when they're closed.

Blanket sucking.
Yup, Buddy's a blanket sucker too. :D I never had a dog that did that before. Not even the first two Dobermans.

OMG, you nailed it! :spit: I've had that happen more than once! One almost made me nose dive! But 'tailgating' is a perfect term! :yatta:

Whining,...:whoop:yes, the whining.

Buddy goes through spurts of licking. I can only assume it's weather/seasonal related. BUT he does stop on command. "NO LICKING !" is our go to command and he's learned I mean business when I say that. :tap:

I must say my Weimaraner was as keen on nosing people's butts and crotches as Layla so I thought that was a weim thing. Layla doesn't slap the ground with her paws but she is vocal and snugly and special. She paws everything and has to taste everything too... Just in case. She tasted a rag at the groomers used to oil the grooming pole. She was unimpressed.

All three of mine are lickers. They lick us, their beds, blankets, and just about every inanimate object out there. Archer blanket licks and sucks himself to sleep and Aria flank sucks. Aria also sucks our arms. Faith loves to lick eyes and ears. She will also nibble on ears both on us and on her siblings. Archer, Faith and Aria also suck on blanket corners and the corners of pillows.

I'm not very good yet at finding all of the new posts and I missed this! This is a good one!

Jax does the slapping the ground with the down command. He throws both of his paws in the air and then slams them on the down. We just thought it was his goofy-redheaded-puppy-self coming out, but he's still at it at 7 years young. He doesn't do it if he knows there's no treat, like if I give the command from the table or couch or something. Goober [emoji12]

He does the nose poke but only to hands or arms that are within reach...maybe a leg or head if those are more accessible [emoji6]

He's not a sucker or much of licker (we feel special if we get one kiss out of him), UNLESS he's licking himself. The first time he made a sore we took him to the vet and she told us that Dobermans were OCD and once they got started they couldn't stop. LOL he will occasionally suck a leg, but again not knowing it was "normal" for the dobe we always had him stop when we caught him. It's weird seeing your dog acting like his own leg is a chew thing!

He's also gotten very groany/whiney. He's always grunted and groaned but it's gotten baaaad. If he's not getting attention and he thinks he should...grunting and groaning ensues! He's really not very vocal otherwise. He almost never growls, even when he'd play with our JRT. She was the Tasmanian devil growling and biting and being generally grouchy, but he never got aggressive with her or growled back...we didn't think he had it in him to growl, but I finally heard it one day in the car when a dog walked by that he obviously didn't like. He only barks when outside at certain neighbor dogs.

Ooh speaking of him with our JRT...he would use his paws to move her where he wanted her! It was so funny because she was such a grouch a lot of the time. He'd be trying to play and she'd want no part, so he'd take a paw and put it over her side and pull her to him. Lol! You could tell she hated that...we thought it was adorable. She would usually just stay where he moved her and look at us like we were cruel for bringing this giant into her home. [emoji1]

Dante has this thing about going between my legs with his head pushing up. My cats have always followed me to the bathroom and if I use the guest bath he will push the door open to come in.

He has one bed that he sucks on. I thought it was because we got him at 6 weeks and didn't know it was a dobe thing.
