Doberman puppy owners - track your weight gain here

Seems we're going to hold at 55lbs for now but I thought I'd share some new pics. 1 yr + 1 month-ish. Mila will be going in for her spay in 2 weeks. First heat was a few months ago. Momma is a wee bit nervous.

That's about right where Drogon was. He reached a max of 94 before I put him on a diet and got him back down to 80 now. 80 is a good weight for him since he's a working dog. If he was a pet I might have kept him at 90.

I'm thinking about joining a schutzhund training group soon but I'm not too sure what age is appropriate to start or if Odin even has the drive for it. any thoughts?

I took both dogs to check their weight. Rumor weighs 75 lbs. Lil' pig. I took a good look at her when I brushed her and either the scale is wrong or it's a good weight for her. She looks great! BTW, she'll be 11 months Wednesday.
Drake's not a pup, but thought I'd mention he's a chunk. He weighed 86 lbs. A little heavier than I like him. He's on slim down mode till further notice...

May I ask why? I'm just curious. I believe a good weight is a good weight period. Extra weight is just that, extra weight.
Because he 'looked good to me'. He didn't look overweight. When he has to jump over a 3' hurdle, climb the A-frame, and run 6 blinds, the extra weight would be a burden on him. Basically the same idea as myself. When I was in HS and college I played soccer and ran track. I was 5-10lbs lighter then. I'm still not overweight but I'm not in 'playing weight'.

Apollo's 1 year and a month right now and weighs about 72lbs....He looks pretty good when he stands alone but when he stands next to other dobies, even females, it's very obvious he is much slimmer than the others. They're much more filled out than he is. He has been at 72lbs the past 3 months! I'm not sure if this is his maxed out weight.

He is very likely to put on more weight as he fills out. The males can take three years or more to fill out. My boy, Oji, stayed the same weight for a long time, and that was 60 - 65 lbs. (at 28 inches height!). Weird thing is, he topped 70 lbs. prior to turning 1 year old, then he lost weight and stayed there seemingly forever.

Woo and Hoo!!

Oji, Three years and three weeks old, weighed in at 78 (seventy-eight) lbs. today! :thumbsup2:

Looks like he might top out at 80 - 82 lbs. one day. Sure beats the 60-65 he was for so long!!

And the pics are where? :tap: We wanna see too!

Nope. Males can take forever to fully mature.

Funny.

Well, I did post a video last night (random Doberman videos) of him making a ruckus at the mailman. The next time I get a pic of him that shows his size and condition, I'll get it posted on up for y'all. Thanks for asking!

One considerable aspect of his development in the, I don't know, last 6 months or so is the thickening of his neck. Oji is a narrowly-built Doberman, but he does have a comparatively thick neck. I like it! It's still a long neck, believe me, but it's sturdy-looking.

@Doberman Gang any thoughts for one of our new members @Hayden regarding schutzhund training/groups?
Every club is different in what age they start dogs. I believe foundation work starts day one. Now that being said, a 8-12 week old puppy won't be doing more than food luring and scent pads for tracking until they are about 6-7 months old. Then after teething is finished prey drive building starts with flirt pole, tugs and bite pillows. Flirt pole may also be introduced at 3 months but all biting is stopped during teething. Some will argue there is no need for bite training until after teething and some say 1year of age. I believe that varies depending on the dog and there drives. I believe any foundation work if done correctly will make training easier as the dog gets older. And Some dogs will not show any interest biting when young but turn it on at 1-1 1/2 years of age, so it is a case to case basis.

Sorry for the long post but my suggestion to people interested in the sport go hangout with your local club, learn what you can and see if it is something you really want to commit to. It is a great sport but will consume your time.
I always hear people complain about there local clubs not being friendly, helpful or accepting of new people. Show your dedication and those attitudes will change, you have to remember many if these people have dedicated many many hours to training and new people that only show up once in awhile just take away from there time training. Training day may last 8-12 hours depending on how many dogs are getting trained so part timers just make a long day longer. My club used to accept anyone that wanted training even if they were not planning on competing. But the club has grown so much we had to change that rule and I have had to refuse membership to a few people.
