Mila will be 10 months on the 19th. She's been having tummy aches a lot (stuff she gets into in the darn yard) so she too is having issues keeping weight on. Just weighed her. 54 lbs. Same height as Willow though.

Omg I know hard that is, Willow has alot of stomach issues as well. Everyone always tells me how small she is for a doberman. I think she looks ok. Has yours gone into heat yet? I'm hoping it helps her tummy issues

Nope. We're still waiting. Vet figured it may be around this time, but so far nothing. Got an updated picture just now (she's listening to neighbors). She looks good so I'm not too concerned. Healthy appetite too. We plan to spay after her heat too so we're watching for it.

I wouldn't worry either, she looks GREAT!
While the girls mature faster, they all do in their own good time.

Don't give what others say a second thought. Most have the wrong vision of what a doberman should be. If you look close at the larger ones, they are generally over weight, not good! The doberman is a medium sized dog, the very first words of the standard.

She looks great! Most people really haven't a clue as to what a healthy dog, let alone doberman should look like. I think a lot of people still associate dobermans with the ones from the 70's-80's when breeding for size was rather common.

People are constantly telling me my lab is "skinny". Because he actually has a clearly defined stomach cut. He's 75ish pounds. He's not flipping skinny! He's a healthy weight. But people are so accustomed to obese labs that he looks starved in comparison. They don't realize a healthy lab is supposed to have a deep chest and pretty sharp stomach cut (not as prominent as a dobes, but close).

As long as her bones arent sticking out everywhere, I wouldn't be concerned. You actually should be able to slightly see the rib cage and very easily feel it.

Rubie's weigh in was 58lbs this week. She was born December 2015 so that puts her at about 16 months. She's got a nice tuck from the side and a little waist from the top so I'm pleased with her physical appearance - currently at about 3 cups of food a day (Acana freshwater fish) but I think we'll start monitoring that more closely. Last I measured height, she was just around ideal height standard for a female. Her spay/stomach tack is scheduled for the beginning of May so just around 17 months and has already had two heats.

That's exactly right. I've had a few tell me they're so skinny, but they're standing there with an obese dogs that has a totally different build than a Doberman.

And yes, @Crystal , we get comments on how 'small' she is but dobermans are not meant to be giant dogs and I think people forget that.

Since I really like this forum and plan to stay involved in it, I'll go ahead and start tracking Atlas' weight! At his 12 week appointment he was 28.5lbs. He's going to be 15 weeks on Saturday, and I can't wait to see how he progresses as I begin keeping track. I'll post pics from above and from the side later to see what everyone thinks. I feel like he looks a bit skinny, but I have never had a doberman and don't know what they should really look like as they progress!

Dobermans are a leaner dog. As long as you're not seeing bones sticking out, he's not underweight. A "healthy" doberman will have slightly visible ribs that can easily be felt. A nice stomach cut. And good muscle tone. The vast majority of all dogs are overweight. Dobermans are prone to hip and joint issues, so extra weight is really hard on them. 28 pounds at 12 weeks is completely in line with average.

@GennyB , @Regalis thank you. :) The ribs and bones are usually what I go by. Since like @FirstTimeDober3 she's my first, the lean look is new to me, I have noticed to pay more attention to her bone structure.

I think one of the most important things with weight on dogs that I've noticed is that until they hit 3, they don't really hit "full body size" for any dog. I've had large dogs before (prefer them) and it never failed that if you look at their 1 year old picture, they look so tiny and lean. Then if you look at a 3 yr old pic (whether boy or girl) they have filled out. Bones poking out, how they're eating, whether they're getting stomach aches that could contribute to a loss of poundage. I think in my experience, that's the best to focus on. Even whether they've gone through maturity or been spayed/neutered. Not that I don't have my moments with Mila since she's my first Dober, but focusing on those points helps me not to panic. haha

@Crystal she started her heat too now. The night of the 11th to be specific. Talked with an owner of her sibling and she's one week off from her sister, which I find pretty cool. :) She's currently sporting human adult disposable undies, haha. Gotta find something better because they aren't meant to stay on long and they're a bit TOO big. I'ma try an old pair of mine since we wear the same size clothes in shirts, hahaha.

I think some use boys underwear and insert some sort of a liner in them. Thankfully we didn't need anything with Della.

My mom bought some diapers that are supposed to fit German Shepherds and they are too small surprisingly. I had an ol pair of my undies (like bikini bottoms style) that I'd used on our biggest female shih tzu I'm now trying. That one is funky and slips too much, but it's decent. I may try offering up a pair of my current underwear, which is boyshort style. We'll see.

I weighed Stella last week she is 40lbs at almost six months. Tonight we went to visit "grandma and grandpa" (my parents) and our little girl was tired so I grabbed a bed my parents have for their shitzu. We had a bed that was the same size the first few weeks we had her before we could get to the pet store for a bigger one. Look at the difference in her size!

Here are the side and above angles of Atlas I wanted to post. He will be 16 weeks old this Saturday! Not sure of his exact weight at the moment. Those poor hips just look so thin, but as I said earlier I am just not used to having such a lean dog.

I think Dobermans look better lean. They are an active breed and excess weight can create health issues. I have always tried to keep all my animals lean. The skinny rat lives the longest. Hahaha

He really doesn't look that thin, especially for a pup. They grow so fast and go through some awkward phases so I never worry too much about weight unless they are skin and bones (which he is not).

I'm with @Tropicalbri's on this, I keep my dogs lean. My lab looks starved compared to the typical lab, but he's healthy, active and has zero joint issues. He can also out run most dogs, not only in speed but distance. I can't believe how fast that stubby legged thing can move when he's after a critter.
