Pepper šŸŒ¶ļø

My 16 yo son was out walking Pepper this am. He walks her occasionally he’s a strong gym going boy and is good with her. He just called me and said a Rottweiler pulled their owner and charged Pepper trying to bite her. He said he kicked the Rottweiler in the nose and it retreated. So I hopped in my car and sped off like a lunatic and found the man with his Rottweiler. I asked wtf happened and did your dog try to attack my son and dog? He stuttered and was older clearly unable to control the dog. I told him get a prong collar and learn how to control your damn dog. He says my wife won’t let me use a prong…I said well idk what to tell you, but you have a problem on your hands. He said she’s a rescue and we don’t know what she’s been through and she’s tried to attack a Doberman before. My blood was and is boiling. I said good luck and drove off. My son and Pepper are ok and this happened by the damn county club near our home. Literally the amount of idiots that live near us!

Not just near you, they are everywhere. It seems to be a thriving culture of "poor baby" "can't use correction" "he's a rescue" on & on & on.
We have had so many issues here it’s just insane. My son handled it well. I don’t even know what I would’ve done at this point. You’re right exactly what he was saying about the dog being a recuse…we don’t know what she’s been through… Oh well don’t walk it alround the neighborhood with a skimpy retractable leash. Idiot.

They don't get that dogs thrive on leadership, they actually are relieved that someone is taking charge & making decisions. They learn that other dogs on the street are not a big deal and they begin to enjoy their walks with their person instead of scanning for something to lunge at.

If that Rott ever gets loose and bites a person, even if he was aiming at a dog and a person got bit trying to break it up, that dog is dead. But no, can't use a prong collar on the baby. What they aren't saying out loud is they'd rather their own dog be euthanized than trained. 😔 Ok, off my soapbox. So glad Pepper and your son are OK.

They don’t get it at all and it seems a lot of people don’t get it. Their dogs rule the roost. It’s pathetic.

That’s just how Pepper is on walks now minding her business and enjoying her walk. She pays zero attention to other dogs. We worked HARD to get there though. She now seems a little anxious after that incident. I am the one who walks her 99 % of the time. Today we are packing to go away and so my son offered to take her out of I had a bad feeling something like that would happened. Wish I had trusted my gut.

I said the same to my husband as you said about the dog being put down because it clearly is aggressive. Plus, it could have been much worse for my son her, Pepper too, or someone / something really injured had it been my husband or me out walking…

Uggghh ready for vacation now.

I hate to say it but is it worth just filing a report with police? Then it's on record? We've been bum rushed countless time by the dogs in our neighborhood but it's never been malicious (luckily). There is one dog though that has gotten free a couple of times and her... I absolutely do not trust to be 'just interested.' If THAT dog ever came at us, Police would be called immediately.

I'd be curious where they 'rescued' this dog from and why whomever thought these folks were experienced enough for a strong breed who clearly needs some extra consideration.

Woosah... Everyone is fine. Your son did the right thing. Pepper is happy girl. She was protected in a scary situation and didn't have to react, herself.

Wanted to add: if you do decide to file a police report, I wouldn't guess anything 'bad' would happen to the dog (at this point). I suspect officers, maybe with animal control, would go talk to the man (if you know where he lives) and give him a warning to keep his dog under control. Maybe that's what the wife needs to experience to change her mind about how they're approaching this dog.

Good call! I will definitely report it. I have never seen the man before and I think he lives in the neighborhood that is connected to ours. He appeared to be clueless hence the tiny collar, retractable leash, and his all around stupid demeanor. He had to turn his phone off when I stopped my car to speak with him…

Definitely should not have a rescued dog especially a Rottweiler. I’ll be on a mission to find this man when we get back and make it a point a talk to his wife. That could have been much worse today. Thank goodness it wasn’t and my son reacted properly.

Same here we have had many non aggressive dogs charge us and I still react the same, I don’t like it and make it clear. Today I have no idea what I would’ve done definitely scary situation for my son and Pepper.

I am glad your son and Pepper are okay. I agree with everything that has been written here, but especially with @LifeofRubie about making a report. You've all seen pictures from our Doberman meetups here in MN, and that group of dogs are all well acclimated to being around others, and are quite trustworthy with great recall, but way more than half of them are still wearing prongs to be under control getting into the park and also wear e-collars, we just don't want to take chances. I know you know this and do the same with Pepper, so I won't preach to the choir here, but hopefully between you and law enforcement, the Rottie's family's minds can be changed.

Also, nice job on your son's reaction in the whole situation.

Thank you! Yes, I just sent animal welfare an email.

Funny not funny - when I said you need a prong on your dog… oh no my wife won’t allow that.. weak.

We’ve had many situations when dogs come charging her and she is on leash. This by far was the worst incident. I believe these incidents have added to why Pepper isn’t into other dogs at all. She has a few select close friend/ family dogs she likes and we allow play.

I wish I had trusted my gut and gotten the dog pepper spray for him when he left. Lesson learned.

Get in gel form if you can, that way the wind won't matter near as much. I love the idea of pepper spraying a dog as they will get to wear it all the way home and share it with the owners.

Funny story - At an endurance ride everyone camps with their horses. Some people bring dogs if that ride allows it. One ride manager announced at check in that dogs must be contained in their own camp. Any dog seen loose in camp would be shot with a paint ball gun and if he had to hit a dog with a paint ball twice the people would be asked to leave. It was a 5 day ride, so most people were there for a week. Nobody was kicked out. This ride manager had THE best rides ever. No nonsense when it came to rules and horses, but funny as all get-out and a veterinarian. I believe he's still putting on rides.

I'm glad everything worked out okay in the long run.
We are both seniors and my hands are weak but we started training them with prongs when they were the right age and now they aren't a problem to walk. Elroy is a very strong boy so if he didn't respect the person on the other end of the leash, he could easily take someone down.

Get 3 cans of the gel, one for you, one for son, one to practice. It will come in handy one day.

Definitely report to Animal Control. First time is a gimme, and the counseling to the owner may save the rescue dogs life by euthanasia by reducing chance it happens again, or worse...some people just aren't as experienced as most here, and make mistakes- more likely to listen to Animal Control.

So you are doing a service, by requiring responsibility, by proxy. Best you can do.

Thank you all! I have the spray, but I will order a few of the gel. I didn’t know there was a gel form and so thank you! I have bear spray too maybe that’ll do lol. I will happily spray the owners as well :)

I am in contact with animal control too.

So thankful your son & Pepper are ok....I hate when that happens. I know you have worked hard on her social skills, and thank goodness that incident didn't escalate. Glad you have contacted appropriate people to get it on record. If there is another incident with that dog; they will be aware of him.

Wow. I don't even know what to say about that rescue! It seems like the wrong matchup! Did they know that the dog was dog aggressive before it they adopted him out? I would think they would be sure that the person adopting him understood that and was capable of controlling the dog. Did these people have a Rottweiler before?

And the dog was on a retractable leash?? I can't even imagine that. Well your son did the right thing. That probably made the dog think twice. But it could have gone the other way too and excited him to bite your son! But trust me, I would have done the same thing! I'm glad he was able to handle the situation. I would be livid just as you are! Don't tangle with my dog or my kids!

When he said his wife wouldn't let him use a prong collar, It would have taken everything in me do not say, grow a pair! She needs to understand that it's not a horrible thing. Used properly, it could save that dog's life.

I didn't either! Let me know where you find it.

Here's an alternative to sprays for aggressive dogs- stun flashlight. It won't leave irritating residue in the dogs eyes and on face but has same effect. The sound alone startles dogs and repels from a distance.

I always post this example video short of 2-y/o Neo and I on a walk in 2023 when confronted by an aggressive (territorial) dog that escaped from her house. This gal never was walked and had little social skills si when she finally got out, thought she owned the block. I have used this stun flashlight on many occasions for rogue, aggressive dogs and has worked every time, even for a pair of them. Never had to actually stun a dog up-close. You must acclimate your own dogs to the sound of the device before carrying it so they don't freak out. Link to product in video description. Owners of this gal have recently started to walk her around neighborhood where she's learning she's not the queen!
