Ragnar and Freyja

I find this all so interesting and informative. I always wondered if there was really that big a difference between male vs female temperaments and personalities. Genetics and breeding seem to have a huge part as well. European vs American vs SA

Very interesting!

I would also venture a guess that this time around, although she has her specificities, you've been through the wringer once with Ragnar as a puppy and are not learning on the fly? Moo is my eager, sensitive, dreamboat; sounds like Freyja is the same!

Ragnar as a puppy and are not learning on the fly?

YES!! This also has a lot to do with it. A lot of the first time Doberman issues with Ragnar were really trying and difficult. It just seems soooo much easier this time. I know what to expect, what to look for and how to counter when the need arises. But then, Freyja puppy was no Ragnar puppy.

Isn't Ragnar part Euro? Maybe I'm mis-remembering. Any SchH working lines? I know my other two female Dobes were nothing like Asha. Actually Asha is like nothing I've ever experienced with any breed. Seriously though, when you see traits and personality of different types as young puppies under the same kind of upbringing, you can pretty much say it's the genetics. And as @Rits pointed out, they can be from the same family and still be much different. I always think of myself and my 3 siblings. We are all 4 so different in personality you'd not think we were raised under the same roof.

Hopefully Im not stepping out of line since he has said it publicly on here but Ragnar is full NA from Horizon Dobes. But yep, genetics! His siblings could very well be cool calm and collected. Nature nurture plays a part too. I think it helps that Don is prepared this time around and got Freyja sooner.

Yes ma’am- 100% NA.
I had little to no knowledge of NA vs Euro. I was very lucky to successfully hook up with a reputable breeder.

This picture and the stringent health testing sold me to this breeder.

Never fully really gave Ragnar’s backstory: Ragnar was actually Maximus. I had been in contact with the breeder but was SOL, she had no more pups left. Maximus was sent to a friend’s of the breeder that just had triplett girls. They had an Au pair that said she had a lot of experience with Dobermans and that she could handle a Doberman puppy. New Doberman puppy with Triplett girls??? Oh my, I just cannot fathom that right there. One would need three Au Pair’s.

Well, that scenario ended badly and fairly quickly. Maximus was sent back to the breeder and she called me saying that the good Lord must be shining a light my way because she had a rambunctious male that was available- Maximus then became Ragnar.

Paul Harvey would say: “and that there is the rest of the story.”

Other than his deep chest and being sleek, his demeanor (to me) is not indicative of NA. But I don’t have vast experience with Dobermans either.

That's what I've always said after you've gone through the trials and tribulations with your first Doberman and not realizing just how intelligent the breed is makes it way more of a challenge for a first time owner. After the first one you know what to expect and how to stay a step ahead of and it makes the next ones way easier. Even though Phoebe is a handful compared to our other ones, we know the things she's going to try to pull at certain ages so it's still nothing like we went through with our first.

I agree that it is probably mostly genetics and I also think that a male of any breed/species will be by nature more dominant. Basic survival of the fittest. But................................absolutely sure that knowing how a Dobe ticks makes the training less traumatic! All that self doubt and doubting the sanity of self and pup that first time around! Not sure if it would be exactly easier if faced with the same type of pup as Jazz was a second time, but it sure would be a lot less stressful and a lot more fun!

Sorry, been really busy.
@Ravenbird

-Youngest finishing up high school state playoffs
-middle performed in 1st college game
-had a scare with Ragnar, he vomited ALOT one day and did not poop for 18hrs. I gave him some mineral oil and yogurt and he cow patty pooped out a big piece of plastic. That jackass is really going to be the death of me.

They have different butt patterns...hahaha.

Oh wow, You know I was harassing for photos in fun, right? Hope Ragnar is OK now. You didn't even mention the weather - heard the cold dipped down to Houston, you guys are probably getting a little chilly there too. Beautiful photos. They make an awesome pair! Congrats to the kids achievements in their ball playing, I know that's a big thing for them and you. Thanks for the update!

Yes, but gives me a reason to sit and make it a point to update.

A big sleet storm this morn, temps down to 15 tonight. Been a very long time since we’ve been this cold. Barely made it to work, sliding sideways a couple of times. I know this is a joke to y’all up North in the Tundra but this is South Louisiana.

Training is going well but slow. Having a hard time to find the time really.

High school ball has finished and competitive ball starts next week so I will be able to spend more time with her when I take Tristen to training.

Really can’t believe the drastic difference between these two. Ragnar is a true sentry working the perimeter while Freyja is at your side sitting on your foot.

These days - polar vortex going on here - K continues to be the sentry, but today, new behavior with me, he kept a paw on my foot while trying to snooze as I was in the kitchen making cookies  Master has a sweet tooth  so I did double duty in the kitchen today during nap time and it was too much to handle for Kaiser who kept dozing off between barking at the windows and snuggling by my feet :hearteyecat: At least I have two batches of cookies to show for it :smilecat: PB to share with K, and Nutella cookies that are perfectly paired with vanilla ice cream.

Yes! The girls have bell shaped bum markings and the boys have heart shapes - assuming the nub is down

Regarding the truck sliding, salt and sand are your friends right now. Even dirt helps with traction so keep a shovel on board. Weigh down the back of your truck if it’s empty. Keep a bottle of 70% + alcohol for car parts that freeze.

Those look fantastic! Damn, now I will have to find some cookies for lunch haha.

Great info given: huh? did not know about the difference male v female with diagrams on butts. My girls are going to get a kick out of this..... bell and heart shapes.

Thanks for the ice info- that is going to come in real handy.

Is this true? I've never even noticed or thought about it! Interesting, now I'll be looking. I thought it was just different with all of them like bigger or smaller patches on the front or face.

@Ddski5 - 99% of the time cold areas don't get ice storms, it lands as snow which is nothing like freezing rain! And the southern areas don't have snow plows, so everyone drives on the snow, packing it down to a thick layer of ice to drive on. And another biggie: 4 wheel drive helps when driving (slowly) on slick roads, but beware of the idjots that think it will help them stop. Gah!

I wondered too but I stumbled across a Dobe butt thread here and elsewhere and found a few males with the bell and some females with the oval. It seems to be generally true though 80% of the time.

When Kaiser was a pup we used to leave him a with a local Doberman breeder. It was like being inside a Dobernado with all the dobes there and I could never tell which one was Kaiser - the bum pattern at least helped me sort out the males and females, lol. I'm going to go look for that butt thread haha!
