Ragnar and Freyja

@Ddski5 - if she chewed up the pads in the crate, not around the house, I'll tell you this: Asha is not a chewer or destroyer, and as long as I could keep my eyes on her in the house the panties were fine. But if I took her to town and left her in the truck alone, I'd come back and find the pad in shreds but the panties still on. :pullhair: . I double up washable lightweight blankets, baby quilts etc on her bed and she never wears pants over night, I just pull off whatever is on top and spotted and toss it in the wash. I think they are obsessed with keeping clean, so that pad that holds all the stuff that is supposed to be cleaned & gone, well, they just want it gone. After the first couple of learning curves the only time I put on panties is in the house while I can watch her and on leash somewhere. Mine is actually quieter and settles quickly, sleeps more, but usually more so the last week or so. But then, here comes normal again.

Are you going to go through one heat cycle or two before you get her fixed ?
We will most prob have her fixed at 18months- right before her 2nd heat cycle. That’s if it is timed right.

Im thinking the same thing. Mercy finished her 1st heat cycle the end of March. Im thinking maybe 1st of Sept, that will be a full 5 months. One of Preacher's siblings goes into heat every 5 months beginning after the first heat. Im really dreading having her surgery but I know it has to be done. I noticed in your picture it looked like you were using pants for dogs. How are those working out ? Be sure and watch for rub marks. You don't want a sore like Mercy had, took a month to heal.

Just so you know, Melissa said her females mature slow. She was telling me their chests don't drop until after their 2nd heat and that her females don't mature until 2-3years old.

Interesting, I'm beginning to think Mercy is maturing slowly. Mercy seems so petite, could be because Preacher is 101 lbs of muscle.

That and our contract says they aren't to be altered before they're at least 2 years. It's possible that she changed it after we got Phoebe though.

I don't remember Phoebe's whining increasing too much with her cycle but I think Albert might have taught her that before. ;) That said, she isn't a bad whiner unless she has to go out or something.

There ya go.

@C908
The pull-up is working really well right now. I really should have bought two because

The girls went to PetCo and bought some disposable briefs and that was a major fail. No way they will adequately fit a Doberman.

We are learning through trial and error but gaining ground every day. I really love the way the girls think I can change/fix the situation 20miles away at work.

Not sure if anyone else has used this, but I bought it for Glory's spay surgery. The Suiticle. Not cheap, but works GREAT!!!!!! And the inside panel has a pocket for a pad for when they are in season. I love this thing....she has no problem wearing it...I only have it on her at night when we sleep, cause she is a picker and a licker. My past Dobes all had to wear the Donut around their neck, or that neck brace that keeps them from being able to bend their neck to lick. I love this little suit! Snaps up like a onesie when they go out to potty. And the part under her belly by incision is real loose.
Just wanted to share...

Sorry, it has been awhile. We had the hurricane that messed us up some and I have been traveling a lot with my youngest daughter with her soccer ventures.

Ragnar and Freyja are doing well. I truly do not think you could get any more opposite than these two. Ragnar needs to be guarding a warehouse or a junk yard. He is on constant alert and patrols the house/yard when there is no need to- he just does it. Freyja is more of a personal protection type, she is at your side- never really gets 4-5ft away. She is happy to be at heel and always looks to you for direction.

They play fight and squabble all the time with Freyja whipping Ragnar’s ass. She is devious as she nips at his shins and flanks and is way quicker than him. He really doesn’t stand a chance against her. She will constantly impose her will and we have to make sure she doesn’t go overboard with it. I will purposely make her sit and let Ragnar go in/out the door first, let him eat first, etc….to try and even it out.

Freyja is the exact kind of Doberman my wife and kids wanted- very protective, lovable and social.

Had a couple of episodes with Ragnar eating the damn pads when Freyja was in this last heat cycle and Freyja ate a chopped up tennis ball the neighbors kid threw over the fence but thankfully I caught it in time and gave the mineral oil. Within 48hrs, it all passed through.

Ragnar is so good in public, he just steps up and shines when I take him out. It is like he knows that everyone is watching and he puts on a show.

Freyja is still learning but is doing extremely well as compared to the amount of work I had to put in with Ragnar. I had to be ever persistent and consistent with Ragnar but Freyja just wants to please. She doesn’t get caught up into a high prey drive of bloodlust like Ragnar, she is even keel and easy to direct.

Freyja is soo fast, she absolutely smokes Ragnar in a dead run.

I will take them both out, Freyja on left and Ragnar on the right. They do well with walking and staying calm but I always have them on leash. I will only work them offleash ECollar on an individual basis. It’s not that I don’t necessarily trust them, I don’t trust people around us. People just do stupid shit or somebody has their untrained dog running around.

I do not have any updated picts, maybe I can take some this weekend.

Great to hear from you, I haven't been on here either in a while.I will have to update.

Thanks for the update, curious minds always want to know... It's actually just as I expected. It's amazing how different these dogs can be. When I got Asha purposely from working lines I thought I'd have just a bit more drive. My first Dobe was a total pet. My 2nd was about like you describe Freyja. So I thought getting working lines I'd get that easy, want-to-please, dedicated dog, slightly sticky but not super strength velco, PLUS more drive and more fearless. LOL, I got all the drive and all the fearless and constant "make me" attitude, and none of the easy want-to-please. I wouldn't trade her for the world, but at my age if I had to get another, I'd be leaning back toward the easier ones.

You should sign them up both up for a FCAT and get an official record of just how much faster she is  I'm sure your girls would enjoy participating, as well!

Interesting to hear how different they are when they have grown up with the same environment and leadership style. Or maybe it is a division of duties with Ragnar watching over the property and Freyja keeping an eye on the humans. Either way, seems like a perfect pairing to me!

I think they DO know! In the early years when we had Kaiser meeting people, they often remarked on how calm he was :spit: I didn't even know how to respond to that so I would just smile 🙃

LOL that was Phoebe at first too. She's really settled the last couple months but it doesn't mean she won't give things a whirl once in a while.

That sounds like a great balance.
