Docking, cropping and other acts of barbarism

I may sound odd... but I consider percing, boob jobs, tummy tucks, face lifts barbaric.
My Dobermans will have natural ears no matter what... Unfortunately I was not lucky to save their tails.

Nobody ever asks me what breed Gino is.
If you buy your dog from a good breeder you won't get the question.
If you don't overfeed and excercise your Doberman he/she won't look like Rottie.

I agree it should be the owner decision. My firm decision is not to crop.
I totally agree.

The people who think it's a coonhound can't be very knowledgeable anyway as they look very different.

I often have people asking what kind of dog mine are. I'm sure because they have never seen a Dobie with a tail before more than not being able to tell it's a Dobie. Everyone has been very complementary of the fact they have tails and I get a lot of compliments about how beautiful they are (the dogs not the tails in particular ;) ) The only negative I have ever gotten about the tails was from a woman in England. She used to have Dobies, but refused to get one with a tail so she switched to a Pug!!! Go figure.

Somebody help me here, but I do believe he did try to breed for the shorter tail but it was a failure and he found it better to just dock it than risk making too big of a change to the breed. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

It seems like it hasn't really been that easy to breed a short tail on any dog breed (apart from one of the Corgi's) please correct me if I'm wrong. My question was on the ears. Should be possible to breed standing ears though.

Many of the GSD dogs need posting of the ears as well, And short tailed breeds are quite unusual, the only ones I can think of are Breton, Shipperke and the Aussie and even among these there are puppies born with full tails.

Old English Sheepdog is one also and I believe it is very rare to have one born with a tail.
Why are they posting GSD's ears? They should be standing, although not unusual for a pup to have a weak ear, it's not common practice to post them. But don't get me started on GSD's of today! I love this breed but so angry at what is happening with them.

My uncle had GSD when I was younger, and he posted their ears for a short period to have them stand correctly. Maybe it wasn't really necessary..

i believe (and i also could be wrong) that this was true of the ears at some point.. They didnt stand erect in the beginning but at some point in the late 1800s or very early 1900s the ears did stand on their own but at some point another breed was added to the mix and the ears fell again..

I think the point of the cropping was - to remove the hand holdability of the apendage - the early crops were much shorter crops than the show crops of today. So unless they could really reduce the size of the ear as well as make it a prick ear - it would not have met the criteria Dobermann and Goeller had for the ear. they wanted there to be no easy hand holds that a bad guy could grip and cause the doberman to "release the bite"... the other equal reason for an open ear was they wanted to facilitate optimum hearing in the dog - and a prick eared dog does have better hearing than a drop eared dog.

I know if I am ever called upon to break up a dog fight, which requires getting the dog to "release the bite", I will grab the tail first which, which will get their attention because they will check to see if it is another attacker joining in the fight - if they do not release the bite with the tail grab, I will go for the ear twist, this almost always will get a release from the bite/hold - if that does not work the only 100% tried and true way to get a dog to let go of the bite and separate the combatants is.... a thumb up the butt *LOL* and having a long tail to hold the butt still, does facilitate this

*LOL* I know more information than you ever needed to know!

LOL , have you tried lifting their back legs instead ? Ed Frawley style , is good to know other methods though .

You know, there are a large group of people now that are going to forever think of you sticking your thumb up their butts when they have to break up or see a fight!! Lol!!! :D
