Taping natural ears

what does this nun ear thing look like?
i didnt know that you had to tape the ears down if you didnt get them cropped....hummm....

You don't always have to tape natural ears. Lucky for me, my pup's ears didn't need taping because I didn't even know it was possible at the time.

I have never seen this taping of natural ears...why is it done?
My Sasha was my first Dobe, and I paid $400 for a very very bad crop....plus the vet told us she was done with ear posting, and she developed pockets.......long story, but first Dobe, a lot of wrong info..live and learn, she's still a beauty!

In the dobermann standard, if the ears are left natural they must hang close to the cheeks. In alot of natural eared dobed, this is not the case when left alone. They tend to develop 'wings' where the part of the ear closest to the head tries to stand and the tops fall, thus causing the "Flying Nunn" effect.

 That's a great thread!

I never had an issue with flying ears... but Asha got it. She is only 11 weeks. I wonder when should I start taping her natural ears?
Should I wait until she is 5-6 months?

Well you mean they tape em down ?? Poor dobers can we ever leave their poor ears alone ?? Geez she is beautiful what a pain to have to make her look funny.. I really am so sick of taping Jakes ears sigh:(

It's much easier to tape natural ears :) and it's only for 5 days.
I will wait and see... maybe it will resolve on its own.

Katja can you post how her ears look now? Most likely my girl will have similar ears.
Do they fly all the time or only when she wants to be cute?

No I don't think it resolve on his own, I did start early with Xasper, I did it twice if I remember well, 5 days, 2 days of and again 5 days, after his teething was done, the ears were nice, I wish I had done it with Zaab too, but I thought it would resolve also, wich they did not :(

Thanks zaxayo! Should I start now? She is only 11 weeks. Teething will start at 4-5 months. Is it correct?

I massage her ears. It seems a cartiledge folds a bit on the front top of her right ear. The left looks perfect so far...

I found more links Lynz. It may not help but I will try it first... it doesn't restrict airflow to the ear canal. I am a bit concerned about ears infection.

Yes you can start with 11 weeks, the nicest thing off taping this way is that you can remove the zip tie, and leave it for a day or two and then again a new zip tie in it, you have to look if the ears are ok, watch it after you remove the zip ties, if it is ok, and after 4 days it start again, tape them again, its important when they do teething and the ears are nog good, to keep taping, it depends how long you have to tape, sometimes it is good after a few time taping, but other dogs need a longer period of taping.

I like the idea to use zip tie but... doesn't zip ties hurt a dog chin? It's harsh plastic... how did you protect a chin?
She is a growing baby....

there is no problem at all, you must do it not to tight just like it is on the pictures, xas never had a scratch of any of his hairs and skin,;) and I think he was the same age.
