The 25 most popular breeds in America - 2024

I think they're cute but I'd never have one.
I think out of all of the small snub nosed dogs the KC Cavalier is the only one I'd even remotely consider but then you have the grooming.

It's weird, because I thought they recognized the Black Russian Terrier (another breed I seriously considered) but I don't find it on the AKC list.
#128 on the 2022 list.

I think the KCC has more health issues than Dobermans... That was several years ago when I was getting ready to commit to a puppy and looking at all the choices, studying the pros & cons. Of course nothing could change my mind about a Dobe, but I remember thinking that KCC was a mess.

Cane corso... why? Has to be just for looks. The French bulldog is a surprise, but I'd never consider getting any "dog" under 40lbs. I don't find small dogs cute in the slightest and giant bully breeds just make my eyes roll. A video on Shield K9's channel showed how useless Presa Canarios were but I don't imagine the Cane Corso is any better off.

I sound so cranky today. Sorry.

Had to do a quick search to refresh my memory and found this from a donation site to NCU doing research on this breeds genetic diseases, which include heart, eyes, HD and SM.

Certain genetic issues attack Cavaliers often and early. Research will focus on the all-too-common mitral valve disease (MVD) and syringomyelia (SM), but it will extend to other issues that affect Cavaliers, from ocular difficulties to orthopedic problems. While this fund is exclusively focused on CKCS research, when breakthroughs come, they’ll benefit other breeds as well. Any dog might get MVD, but it’s 20 times more prevalent in Cavaliers and the leading cause of death. It occurs when the valve regulating the left ventricle of the heart fails, and some oxygen-rich blood headed to the rest of the body leaks back into the heart. If untreated, congestive heart failure kills the dog.

Though SM isn’t fatal, it’s a painful condition known as “neck-scratcher’s disease,” because dogs commonly scratch in the air near their necks. Researchers estimate more than 90 percent of all Cavaliers have a malformation that squeezes the brain’s cerebellum through the foramen magnum, the hole at the back of the skull. That partially blocks cerebrospinal fluid from flowing down the spinal cord, and variable pressure from that abnormal flow creates fluid-filled cavities near the brain.

I know the Doberman doesn't have much wiggle room on health issues, so I wont' go pointing fingers, I just thought this poor spaniel breed!

I'm pretty cranky when it comes to popularizing breeds and the damage that happens when the population of them is mostly BYB and the exaggerations of physical traits that become serious health issues. The dogs suffer most of all.

No worries on the cranky.

The Corso is a breed that has been/is being reconstructed. It's pretty much complete if you ask me, as this began back in the '80s I think. As with several other breeds, there is plenty of controversy, confusion and arguing over lines and histories. There are some who claim the Neopolitan Mastiff and the Cane Corso are the same breed. The breed varies a lot.

There are overdone Corsos. There are Corsos that are too slight. There are Boxer-influenced ones. There are Dane influenced ones.

That said, by and large, I believe the breed to be quite capable and trainable. One major factor that attracted me to the breed is its physical agility despite its size and bulk. They really move explosively and can maneuver well. As with some Presa Canarios, the Cane Corso is sometimes used for boar hunting. Look up Diamond Grit Cane Corso. He is into that. He got one of his Corsos from a husband and wife team called Cane Corso Excellence and Altiere Cane Corso, I believe. I frankly was surprised his (male?) he got from the was so game and capable, as some of their dogs seem very heavy and approaching overdone.

One thing that steered me away from the breed, aside from its popularity, is the great inconsistency in length of tail dock! People suffer from what I call Tail Blindness. They just don't seem to care, or notice, the length of a docked tail. I believe the standard calls for the fourth vertebrae. I can barely tolerate a dock that long, especially because the breed is so waggy! The dog just looks so silly and unpleasing with that rapidly wiggling docked tail reminiscent of a Boxer with a dock that's too long. Yet some breeders produce Corsos with dock longer than that. Sometimes you see it shorter than that. The same problem is rampant in the Borboel. Only a few breeders I talked to really gave me the time of day on the dock length issue. I understand that when a pup is of docking age, it is hard to discern where to dock it. I guess a practice is to dock the length of a quarter (the coin) and a couple breeders I spoke to say they do it the length of a nickel in order to achieve a somewhat shorter dock. But yeah, you can tell it matters a lot to me.

Someone at my kids school brought their corso to football practice this summer. Although I have no interest in corso’s unlike my wife. It had a really good baseline, although its obedience left a lot to be desired. It was a pretty laid back dog but I intentionally stared at it from 10-15 yard’s away. That dog lasered in on me and watched me the whole practice everywhere I went. It never reacted, just watched me and not in a friendly way. I actually liked the dog for who he was. That dog had a lot of potential that the owners couldn’t see or were aware of.
It also had more natural ball drive than my dobie. They can move for a big dog but have pretty small gas tanks.

Interesting post. I've been noticing a lot of big dog puppies at our suburban town in san diego county dogpark- cane corso's, presa canario, a neopolitan/cane mix with brindle coat.
Several danes.

One day there were four other dobes in a two hour period. Lots of doodles, gsd/husky mixes.
Mostly rescues otherwise, bullies and tj shelter dogs.

Here is what one social media site says, in a search on startpage sorted for last twelve months, says:

And this is useful- relates to the breed going in and out of popularity.

I'm of similar opinion:
Labs were knocked off the AKC list top spot in 2022...(latest found at AKC)
by Frenchies...which just dont appeal to me.
Among health problems, etc there's this:

And here is another data source:

Glad to see dobies are NOT as popular, actually.
Less demand means less BYBs chasing dollars

Riffing on social media and the owners of dobies seen lately in socal...
Seems to be an "influencer" thing going on...

One thing I noticed on the Fi collar I got was how much content/features was related to Instagram that was not needed for base functionality.

Been waiting for the new list. Is this the AKC list? Man, the Corso at #7?? Talk about skyrocketing popularity!
The OP article link to AZ animals did not explain the methodology of the list, but noted based on Google searches...Cane Corsos are most searched...

They dont appeal to me...too aggressive, and a risk but thats just me.

My mil has one she’s a doofus. I can’t handle it.
Where to start 🤷‍♀️😂… lol she chases shadows so she thinks opening and closing the outside door is fun, when it’s annoying because she scratches non stop at the door. She also runs into my car when I drove down their driveway I also always think I ran her over and my heart stops. I do think it’s lack of training though.
