I hate to say this but the backyard breeders come out of the woodwork when the demand for a breed goes up. Then the health and everything that breed stood for goes down... my opinion only, but I do cringe when breeds I like get in the top ten.

Is this the AKC list?
That I don't know but I was surprised to see the Corso so high.

I couldn't agree more.

I've wanted a Cane for a few years.... but when we started looking at "breeders" we quickly found that they're really aren't any around here, this is such a wonderful breed. (WAS) but after seeing how popular they became and how quickly, I knew that this was not the time... temperament and health issues for such a powerful dog... Ummm. I think not!

I am not disappointed at all about not finding a Cane! I found my beautiful Diesel! <3

The lady that boards Stassi had never even worked with a corso before. But has brought 3 in for board train in the last 6 months. That says alot right there.
Wow, I've never seen one around here, even at a dog show.

Around here the hunting and herding groups are by far the biggest.

Central Ohio, around Dayton and Columbus, seems to be a major hub for Corso breeders. I very seriously considered the breed and communicated with several breeders. I know you scored an even better breed with your Dobe but Derek Matson of Alcor Cane Corso is a legend in the breed and lives around Columbus. Some breeders who have spawned off his are Mad River, and Americana (both in the Columbus region). Too many to list. In Indianapolis is a quality breeder who I talked to. Way out in Colorado is Castle Guard, a very good breeder. Here in Cincinnati is a breeder who does nothing with his dogs, but is asking $4500. Sheesh.

That normally wouldn't be too terrible for a well bred dog, but if he doesn't do anything with them, it sounds like he's more in it to make a buck.

Yes, some hot breeds in the guarding type dog world are fetching silly high prices. "Breeders" are riding the wave of popularity. It's kind of like craft beer "pints" selling for 7 - 9+ dollars.

Presas, Boerboels, Corsos, of course American Bullies – people can just get two dogs, breed them together and hang a 4K + price tag on them. They might have papers. ? They might do a DNA test on them. ?

I contacted one woman who has started her own large, heavy breed (shall remain nameless unless you think it's okay to mention the name) and she really prizes the colors and markings. Plain old black or grey ones go for a "pet price" of 2500. The valued colors are from 5 - 10 thousand dollars.

That's the type of thing that makes me insane. I know someone who breeds small dogs (#11) around here and she goes for the outrageous colors that aren't AKC accepted and charges a fortune for them. They aren't AKC registered and there's no health testing on them but she probably has 20 litters per year and I think she's finally running out of buyers who go for the "cute unique" factor. She quit her job and breeding is now her "career". Trust me, I've put my 2 cents in more than once.

Here in Houston there are Dane breeders that were selling the Merle’s as “designer colors”. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Not surprised at all about Frenchies. Incredibly BYB but papered!
I wish I could find it again to show you, but I recently got an Instagram ad for a “Frenchie” stud. They used all the byb terms lol “lilac Merle, fluffy, big rope”… It was horrible looking as you can imagine, and obviously not a purebred French Bulldog.

I also came across this on TikTok live and thought it was disgusting… Their username is Paranormal Bullz and caption was “English bulldog minis/frenchies.” All of the dogs look awful but the one on the left is probably one of the worst I’ve seen. It’s really sad to see what’s happening to some popular breeds right now. 2F6EE30E-57EA-4952-9A02-F1BA2F514895.webp

I have a dog show friend who breeds French Bulldogs and hers look nothing like that.

I dont think that is the fact.suspicious list.
I just pulled up the official AKC breed ranking list. I thought they had the 2023 rankings by now, but the most recent I found was 2022. The Doberman Pinscher for 2022 is at 15, and the Cane Corso is at 18 for 2022.

It's weird, because I thought they recognized the Black Russian Terrier (another breed I seriously considered) but I don't find it on the AKC list. Maybe I'm missing it. FYI, the key reason I just couldn't go with a BRT is that unless they are in a proper show cut, and standing proudly they look just like a large black "doodle".

I have noticed the French Bulldog popularity in so many videos and tick tocks of late! Not surprised that it's showing number one. I don't know what the popularity is with this one.🤷‍♀️ I think they're cute but I'd never have one.
