I still would have done the same as I am because I believe in it
Of course you would!

I'm grateful for all the things my breeder did with Ashas litter - and at the time I was unaware of about half the things she did were even done at all by breeders so I was impressed. I'm finding out now that lot's of good breeders do these things. And also way too many don't.

And also way too many don't.
That is for sure. While 8+ puppies would be a lot, I feel its a disservice to not at least attempt to do half of these things when you are most certainly in the positives for finances then... I won't break anywhere near even with this litter if you add up the health testing, stud fees, repro vet fees, fuel, entry fees, places to sleep, title submission fees, OFA fees, litter registration, microchips + registration, ear crops, food, the list goes on, whew. Anything we do receive to bring things back closer to zero is going right back into health testing, stud fees, and even more titles on her for the next planned litter. :D

And please know that I wasn't insinuating that you would do anything different with a larger litter! I know you wouldn't ! I was just thinking how much more tired you would be and more active and less sleep if it was an even larger litter! :wideyed: Thank God it's not like raising a child and most of the work is done after they go home in 12 weeks! But those 12 weeks! Wow. Especially once they're on the move! I think you're doing a wonderful job with them! I'm very proud of you!

Oh for SURE!! I definitely agree it would be like now but even more tired. At least with a child it's a slow burn, usually one kid. With 5 pooping machines that rapidly grow in those 12 weeks it feels a little like a semi contained chaotic flash fire 🤣. Thank God for litterboxes to keep things cleaner and the fact we can cage our animals and not be abusive 🤣

Wow what a treat with those videos! I don't know what I was expecting but it was so cute seeing them wobble around - they are just learning to walk and stabilize themselves! The different energy levels and interactions, what a great experience to have! Dietrich looks like she will enjoy a good game of tug going forward. She seems spunky too when she blasted past the barrier and bumped into the teal pup along the way, and neither of them were bothered by it. "Uncle Stavros" still makes me lol, he looks so tall near the ex pen. Oh and all those squeaking sounds they make, just adorable! Getting those vocal cords ready for howling

Oh my goodness! They are so darn sweet! You are going to cry your eyes out when each one goes! Are they all taken?

Yes I am! Two of the girls are going to pet homes and already spoken for (one is @NancynLiberty). They are both local. The other two girls my breeder and I are going to be watching to see what they look like from a conformation standpoint. I don't need another puppy right now but if shes better than Ripley I'll be keeping one. My breeder will be taking one to keep. If one isn't what I'm looking for to improve what I produce but needs to go to a sport home, I'll keep her until I can find her the right home. The boy is going to a show home already lined up if nice.

Sorry for the late update! Had a busy weekend with visitors, first baths, and first time stacking!

Where has the time gone? The pups are 5 weeks old and the fun is ramping up!

During week 4 we continued on everything from prior weeks. In addition to all of those continued skills we added some new things to teach and expose them to.

First off, they get supervised playtime in the kitchen/living room! Three times a day they would get about 30 min of running around and having a grand ol time. Our resident kitty would mill amongst this play. They all are respecting her presence as just another creature of the house and not a play thing. In addition to the kitty they are getting constant exposure to our male doberman, Stavros, and mom is starting to play with them. Both vital things for them to experience to learn proper doggy social skills!

We added in barrier training. This is giving them a small/easy barrier or obstacle they have to overcome without any assistance from people to access what they want. We used meal times for this. They learn that just because they cry they won't receive help and quickly learn that they can overcome challenging and stressful situations on their own. The first day was the only day a few struggled but eventually overcame... After that every obstacle has been "challenge accepted" for them all!

I've introduced clicker/marker training to them. They are learning that click = food and are developing a Pavlovian response to the marker. Marker training doesn't have to be a clicker either, a simple word "Yes!" can easily mark to a dog that the behavior they just performed was pleasing to us and that they are going to be rewarded for it. Using this training for examples such as a puppy that maybe climbing and jumping on you, as soon as their feet hit the floor, mark with a click or Yes! THEN reward. You will find that they "get" what you want so much faster using marker training! This is why I'm giving them a headstart on this for their future homes!

In addition to marker training I'm continuing to build on rewarding sitting behavior for attention. I walk up to their xpen with a handful of treats. Their natural puppy response is to jump, climb, and cry at the gate! The moment someone sits they hear the marker and have food offered in front of them. Once they get that, I start rewarding eye contact before I reward. I'm finding the puppies now coming up to me in different areas of the house, not just outside the xpen but sometimes inside or during their playtime outside. Puppies coming up to me then sitting right away in front of me, looking up at me and waiting patiently for attention. No matter what I'm doing, I always make sure to show them that I see their efforts and pick each one up individually to give them a few seconds of affection for reward. This is offered behavior and if you take time to capture, mark and reward it the moment it happens, you will see this good behavior eventually offered 100% of the time!

The pups survived their first week in their pen in the kitchen! They heard EVERYTHING that goes on in a house. Loud food processors, the dishwasher, the washer and dryer running and beeping, the oven beeping, loud banging of pots and pans in the sink as they are being hand washed, the Roomba, dropping of pots and pans, the big dogs barking, and even the smoke detector a few times. A few things (not all) they would startle to, for them it was coming out of the crate to see what was going on. I saw no fear in any of them. Once the noise was over or they investigated it enough, they'd go back to sleep. Good pups!!

The pups also slept in kennels (with doors open) for the first time AND kept them both entirely clean of any pottying for the entire week!! We just added a third crate last night. Eventually each puppy will have their own kennel. They are now drinking water on their own and are starting to bathe themselves.

On Thursday the puppies started being fed in their kennels with the doors closed. Two and three puppies to a kennel for now. We take the puppies out of their pen, put their food bowls in the kennel and wait for the puppies to offer manding (sit and seeking attention). The first two puppies to sit get scooped up and placed back in the xpen. They are then encouraged to run into their kennel with the food all on their own. This is to continue to build a strong desire for the kennel as a good place that THEY want to be! Bonus: Dietrich asked nicely to be let out of the kennel before her food was gone. We let her out only for her to immediately storm over to the litterbox to do a #2! Proud momma moment to see everything coming together! 🥰

How week 4 started

End of week 4. The pups advanced to two litter pans and more room to play and an extra kennel. They also started drinking water on their own this week!PXL_20231215_014746220.jpg

Again, pics are out of order timeline wise but all during week 4. Another post to follow with more pics 😉

Stavros absolutely LOVES them and they seem to like him too. He can often be found hanging out around the puppy pen either: play biting, nose booping, licking or admiring the puppies.

Some exciting news to share around here! Ripley has been bred and we are expecting her first litter in early November!!! :woot2::yatta:

View attachment 138192

We weren't originally going to breed her until spring but there are only two shows left for the end of this year that she'd miss vs not being able to go back out until mid summer if we waited for spring. The idea is to breed her to help give her hormones she can only get from having a litter that will help mature her a lot more than she already is. So...we jumped on the chance and found a nice local-ish stud to have a live cover for her first breeding. Of course I'm not going to breed to any male so the match has to be something that will add to what she already has to produce better than they are for the betterment of the breed! Health is priority number one along with good temperament and conformation. I want the total package with these pups!

I'm so thankful to the stud owner for approving Ripley for her boy. She said she doesn't just approve of anyone and the girl needs to be exceptional. He has good bone, a nice front and a full head to compliment her lovely topline and rear. He also has a great disposition and has no dog aggression. The huge one for me is that he is an older male with all of his health testing complete and up to date. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to have a male check off all your boxes on your list! And that geography or human politics doesn't lock him from being used.

He produces better than himself, I've seen his kids and lots of them are CH/GCH/BISS/OHBIS and have performance titles too, which is a big plus for me. Can't wait to see what these two produce but I fully expect show and performance pups with amazing stable temperaments that are true to the breed. ;)

I plan to raise the litter with modified puppy culture and Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS). I have a playlist of all kinds of novel sounds that will be playing in the whelping room when their ears first open. I'll get them started on crate training and litter train them on alfalfa pellets so they should go home finding their crate a safe place to be and will easily transition to going potty on the grass! I'm nervous and excited all at once but wanted to be sure to share the news with you guys!!!

Ripley's little ad I made the day before her announcement...
