My girl is a woman now. ☺️

I can't remember what brand I have but I did try the liners and they moved more for her than the regulars so I've stuck with regulars
Wow, that I've never had a problem with. Once placed they never moved. The adhesive is great. It's not the pad moving around that I have an issue with; it's the pants. There's a slight play in there and I can tell by the pad shes not always bleeding in one spot. Granted, its hardly the whole length of the pad but I like that shes covered 'in case'. 😉 Easier to take the pad off than wash the pants.

I'll try the actual pads if I find she needed more absorbency. But every time I took her outside I would change it so it was changed quite often. Which is just fine. I wouldn't want to leave it on her too long.

I'll see if next time she bleeds heavier. For now it seems the extra thick padding would have been Overkill. And maybe more of a waste cost-wise if it's changed often and barely used. But I haven't really considered the cost or done any comparisons. Time and experience will tell where I go from here! And it's great to have everyone else share their experiences, ideas and suggestions!

I asked her to wear her pants for dogs tonight. At first she tried chasing her tail, then since that didn't work, she tried laying down and getting at them from her crotch. I told her no, and she minded. What was really helpful was to find a benebone she hadn't seen in a while and suddenly panties were not even noticed. Got about a half hour out of her, total, for the night.

Oh, I didn't mean move in that sense. I was talking coverage like originally stated. The liners were narrower and shorter than pads for us so it was like a moving target so to speak lol! Like I said, the girls both have done agility and IGP wearing panties; running full out, jumping, twisting, turning, biting :D and all is good! I don't use mine really for absorbency since I change mine every time they go out too, but I've found the thickness helps keep everything in place with less play room/shifting of the target, if that makes sense  Lucky you that the liners to work out! :thumbsup2:

Ok, it seems Annie is just about done! 🤗 I'm thinking Christmas day she'll be out of her panties!

Sooooo,....since this is my first intact girl....do I still have to worry nasty boys 🤭 bothering her? Or getting her 'in trouble '?? 🙄 Can she play with my neighbors dog again without both of them acting like horny teenagers? 😜 Are we finally past all that??

I feel quite lucky that this all happened after Thanksgiving and before Christmas! What a deal that was, huh? I doubt I'll get that lucky again. ☺️

Yay! I counted a month as fertile for Pepper. So when she started to bleed then 30 days after that. I’m no expert lol, others will know more than me.

Standing heat (when they will let a male dog mount them) is about the only time they will get pregnant, A male dog may still be attracted to her and try to entertain her, but she will not let him and may go so far as to ugly-fight a dog who tries.

I'd say that depends on the dogs. Any of them intact? They might get pushy, intact or not and Annie might get defensive. No reason to take a chance with a dog fight, especially on her first heat, not knowing when her standing heat is actually over.

@MichiH - I think 30 days is a good safety rule.

Well, you know the ol' sayng: A parent of "sons" has only to worry about one <male copulatory organ>. A parent of daughters has to worry about "all of them." :D

And I understand that but please tell me when that standing heat is? At what time during their heat?

It varies from dog to dog, and without being exposed to a male dog you probably won't be able to tell when she would accept a dog mounting her and when the day came that she'd snap at him for suggesting such a thing.
If you keep her safe (no exposure to male dogs) for 30 days starting day one with the first drop of blood, you should have no worries.

Hope this helps!

From Cornell University:

The four estrous cycle stages include proestrus, estrus, diestrus, and anestrus.

1. Proestrus

Estrogen is a hormone produced by the ovaries during proestrus and peaks one to two days before the next stage (estrus). The estrogen produced in this stage causes bloody vaginal discharge and swelling of the vulva (or external genitalia). Dogs will be attractive to and may demonstrate playful behavior with male dogs during this stage but are not yet receptive to breeding. This stage can last, on average, between six to eleven days.

2. Estrus

Estrus begins when the female is receptive to breeding. Estrus generally starts with a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH) due to decreasing estrogen and increasing progesterone. These hormonal changes are what influence the female's receptivity to breeding. The vaginal discharge may change to straw-colored, although many variations exist between individuals. Estrus usually lasts five to nine days but may vary between one and twenty days.

3. Diestrus

Diestrus begins when the female no longer shows signs of estrus, such as standing to be mounted. It is characterized by an elevation in progesterone, which peaks 2-3 weeks after ovulation and then plateaus at that elevated level for 1-2 weeks before slowly decreasing over 10-30 days. Progesterone (the pregnancy maintenance hormone) will increase during this stage, whether a dog is pregnant or not. Diestrus ends when progesterone concentrations return to baseline. During this stage, female dogs will no longer be attractive to males, nor will they allow mating. The external genitalia is indistinguishable between diestrus and the next stage, anestrus.

4. Anestrus

Anestrus is the stage a dog enters either at the end of her heat cycle or after having a litter. Progesterone levels remain low throughout this stage. There is a period post-partum or after a normal heat cycle where the uterus must undergo a process called involution. This process repairs the uterus to prepare for repeating the estrous cycle and requires about four months to complete.

And from the AKC website:

Length of a Cycle in Relation to Fertile Period

Typically, bitches are most fertile the last three to four days before they go out of heat. Bitches often follow a similar pattern each heat. So keeping records on every heat even when not breeding will help you be ready for the heat you do breed. Length of estrus is used as a generally guideline to know when to start progesterone levels.

Testing for bitches that have very short heats, in and our in seven to nine days, needs to begin on Days 2 or 3 of the heat cycle. These bitches often have their LH surge at the start of the heat and are ready to breed within four to five days.

Testing for bitches within 10- to 12-day cycles should begin by Day 6. Begin testing by Day 8 for dogs with 14- to 16-day cycles. Start later for bitches that stay in heat a full 21 days or longer. Just remember, there can be some variation between heat cycles. If the bitch starts flagging earlier than expected then get her in sooner for a progesterone level.

And I understand that but please tell me when that standing heat is? At what time during their heat?
It varies for all of them, if we knew, we wouldn't have to guess or test for breeding and we wouldn't miss! Typically by day 10 we start progesterone testing with a Repro vet to try to catch when they ovulate. Every day we have to run progesterone numbers to try and catch ovulation according to the surge in numbers. Some girls stall, some are slow, some are fast. This is why for breeders, it's important to test daily and why as a pet owner, it's just safe practice to assume she can be bred at any time and to always keep her on leash when outside or contained in a fenced yard with direct supervision, and away from males for 30 days (crate and rotate if any intact males in home) vs trying to give you a concrete answer. Also, some girls won't flag or flirt for males, especially maiden girls, so don't always use that either as a sign that she's receptive. They can also hold onto the sperm for days so even if she hasn't ovulated yet, she can still get pregnant. 😅
