Muscle!

Beautiful country!
Its on my bucket list to drive up from Lower 48 and just wander around camping, taking it all in.
Many places only accessible by ferry or floatplanes. Magnificent last frontier.

BTW There is another user here who lives in that area I believe @chilkat ? Or was that the other dobe webforum?

Hubby has a friend who lives way up north in AK. He's a trapper so he has miles and miles of trap lines near the Arctic Circle. I don't know if you've ever seen the Mountain Men series on the History Channel but he's the one from Alaska in the show.
Wow! Yes I have watched all of that.
There are two or three in the cast in AK.

Admire them all for living their adventures!

I think your guy looks fine, it was mainly just a heads up about the burning calories means he's being very physical and at his point in growth and developing and growing bone it can be a problem. The best development for bone growth is slow growth, the more they burn energy the more you have to feed the more calories to share to the growth and sometimes this can lead to too-fast growth. So better to be too slim while working than keeping him with enough calories to "over-feed" the developing bones. Hope that makes sense. I'm not at all against lots of free movement and exercise. I did hikes with my puppy, we went all over the place and she jumped and crashed and all those things. Made me a nervous wreck but she did fine. I love that you are doing tracking and nose work - mine does AKC scent work and I think it's terrific for exhausting them - not that it tires them, just seems they have a better mind the rest of the day!. We worked on tracking but did't keep it up. She's IGP working lines, American/German on bottom and those Sant Kreal lines on top -

I always love conversational threads, you aren't hijacking at all - excuses for more photos: here's my girl between 4 - 6 months, tucked up but ribs covered.

Very nice looking girl you have. I would disagree on calorie intake, it's not really the amount of calories that can cause too fast growth, it's excess calories, nutrients, minerals. He isn't getting excess calories, his ME requirements and RER are just much higher than your average pup/dog. Too much calcium can also become a problem, but his osteoblasts are busy building bone density as opposed to just lengthening bone. You can't really compare a puppy/dog being raised in a pet home or lab environment with one that is raised in a wild canid environment. So many times I've heard pet dogs breaking a leg, or injuring joints just jumping down off their sofa...not enough bone density leads to such things. One of my boys (165lbs at the time) jumped off a cliff 15' to the ground, because I called him and it was the quickest way to return, he was obedient..lol. But point being, he did so without injury because he had good bone density, strong joints, tendons and muscles to absorb that force. I appreciate the advice, though I tend to err on the side of mother nature when it comes to deciding how to care for animals.

I do agree with you. I have no idea how to figure calories burned the extra requirements he's needing, so you're way ahead of me on that. I adjusted feeding on what they looked like physically. I never experienced Pano in puppies, but I know it's at thing. Now I wonder if that's more common in puppies that actually do less physical activity and are restricted too much. My Doberman before went with me on horseback rides and I'm pretty sure she went on an all day 20 mile ride when she was about a year old. This was back in the early '90's, I never even thought about it. Fast Forward to these days and people would swear I was abusing her. 😅 So yeah, we're in total agreement.

Asha did that several times: seeing where I was and just come the shortest route, giving me heart failure. I wasn't even calling her, she'd just decide to catch up with me.

When you live in the wild, you embrace the wild side 😜
Who is this guy?!

Zastava had it. I wouldn't have called her puppyhood necessarily "protected" but we do live in town on a small lot and used only the nature trails and dog park for exersize off of our property, so nothing like what Asha and this dog are doing. (so sorry if the name was mentioned, I can't get it to my memory right now :bag: ) Katyusha had the same puppyhood but if she had it, it wasn't noticeable enough to look into it. So I do wonder if you're on to something. Just 2 dogs from very different lines, so just putting it out there for what it's worth.

Have not had television in 15 + years, can't say I miss it. 😉 In the spring and summer the whales put on quite a show in our front yard and in the winter we have the seaotters to watch. Just living here is a grueling adventure every day 😆. Currently building a house in town because I don't think I can survive another winter on the island, when you're taking a pickaxe to your frozen creek for a couple of months to get chunks of ice to melt for water, it's too much work! I'm glad they have shows on television about Alaska, hopefully they don't make it glamorous, it's the last frontier for a reason.

Quite the opposite at first when they were turning everyday events into drama. Hubbies friend told them to either keep it realistic or he was going to leave the show.
