Loose stool question

Izzy has had issues with diarrhea since we got her! Come to find out she had hookworms. BAD...it took three different meds to finally get her cleared up! She still has very soft stools though. Once in a great while it will be a nice firm turd and I get so excited! LOL!
I know it’s not worms just did a recheck Tuesday. Well along with these loose stools is some leakage in between going potty. Pretty sure it’s her anal glands but they don’t appear to be full just leaking. I was wondering if pumpkin would help firm up her stools? And if so how much should I give her and how often? She’s 5 months old and weighed 42.9 lbs Tuesday. Thanks for any and all input!

They definitely have more sensitive tummies when they're younger like that. The pumpkin sure can't hurt and you're probably right about the anal glands since they don't express as well if the stool isn't firm.

I do the poop patrol and if Jazz has soft poops a couple of times I feed her some raw meaty bone. If she gets too much bone then the poops become too hard! A balancing act! And I have noticed that looser poops cause anal glands leakage after a while. Does this leakage have an unpleasant smell, different to poop? Jazz is fed kibble with raw supplements.

I’m feeding her Purina Pro Plan Focus Large breed puppy Chicken & Rice. I give her one and 1/2 cups three times a day.

I’m afraid to give her the raw bone since I don’t feed raw. Thinking that might upset her tummy too. No the odor is not the foul fishy smell that I smelled when she was much younger.

Pumpkin is fiber, so once you have a firmer stool stop giving it. If you keep giving it, it will begin to draw water and the poop will loosen up again. I save my leftover pumpkin purée in an ice cube tray and freeze. Makes it easier to pull out a serving when needed.

My breeder also had the puppies on PPP Focus. Shadow was doing well on it so we kept her on it till she was about 6 months then we transitioned to a higher quality food. I don’t think it’s complete shit like Puppy Chow but can be improved. Anyway, are you feeding anything else - treats, chews- pigs ears, bullysticks etc.? Also sometimes when the puppies get over excited or sometimes stress can create soft stool.

This year we have been dealing with a lot of soft stool/diarrhea and it appears, for us, the higher protein kibble is too much for our dogs.
Finding a kibble that works well sometimes take time.

Marrow is rich, may want to give that bone over a few days.

They do really love a bone to worry at! I agree with @Kaiser that it should probably be given over a few days, especially if there has been any tummy issues recently. When I just want to introduce some bone into the diet to firm up the poops I sometimes give a handful of raw chicken wing tips. Jazz is adult and six or seven wingtips seems to do the trick. Providing your pup chews them properly and doesn't just inhale them that is............I suppose you could freeze a block together so they have to be chewed up.

Just adding an edit that when I look for meaty bones to feed I like to avoid the weight bearing bones as they are super hard. Ribs with some meat on them seem to be safe enough. Jazz was safe enough with hard bone when she was younger but the adult power of her jaws makes me cringe when she bears down on hard items!

I only let her chew/lick on it for a about 30 min, I hope that wasn't too long. I did also get one of the raw rib bones too. We actually have chicken wing tips in the freezer for her. (My husband started my pomeranian on a raw diet well the whole chicken wing one weekend when I was out of town without my knowledge) Then thats all she was fed for some time. I keep reminding him now just a chicken wing a day she did not get all the nutrients she needed.
I tried the wing tip one day (thawed) but she was having trouble chewing it and I was fearful of her choking. She is still teething.
