Kings eard were posted on monday and started smelling bad this morning so we took them off anf his ears along the line where the crop happened was bleeding. idk what to do and what other way to post with out so much tape? i was using paper tape

I imagine his ears were fully healed along the edges before they were posted? Posts should be changed every 3-5 days if using backerrod. I don't recall how his ears were posted (there were a few new threads with crop issues).

You only need two pieces of tape so they can breathe. Some people cover the whole ear but if your guy seems prone to infection you may only want a couple pieces of tape.

Pictures would help, however if the incisions have not fully healed I would keep the tape off of them and leave the ears down until they do. Our vet wrapped and posted Zeus's ears the day after cropping them. Every time we would change the posts and pull all the tape off it would rip off the scabs and re-open the wound. Started doing research and reading the forums on here about doing the posting yourself and it was a breeze once we all got the hang of it. I love the crop the vet did, however his post-crop methods were terrible and caused us quite a bit of headache and stress. IF the ears are already healed and you start noticing a smell take out the posts, clean the ears if necessary and then let them dry out before reposting.

Hope this helps until others chime in.... Good luck!!

This is when they first got posted and the vet said they were heeled but they still had scabs so ima leave them down for a while to heal the tape that the vet used and the ones i used at home hurt his eard so i don't know what other tape or method to try

I would use just two pieces of tape on each ear – one at top, one at bottom. That said, it is possible to vary the position of the tapes somewhat to try to keep them off irritated areas.

I try to only use one thickness of tape where it passes over flesh (rather than wrapping it multiple times around).

they still had scabs so ima leave them down

I would definitely leave them down if they aren't fully healed then. @Lizbeli Posted a good picture of how much tape to use. Bridge between if necessary but keep bridge lower to the head. Also, if it's a long crop you may need a few more strips depending on ear length.

Search out the posting forums on here, they were honestly a God send when we were having problems with how the vet was taping them.

Edit: We used breathable athletic tape, it's almost see through

Don't post them if they still have healing to do. The edge of the ear should be fully healed- or at a minimum- healed where the two pieces of tape would go.

Leave them down til healed and when you do post use only a couple pieces of tape. You can put baby powder on the furry part of the ear if needed so the hair doesn't get pulled out when removing the tape!

This is him after the ears were taken down as you can see the tape hurt his ears pretty badly idk what to do ): i'm super scared to tape them back up later :(

They can certainly look pretty bad sometimes, eh?

Yeah, let those raw areas breathe and heal. Don't put anything over them. If you have enough room to tape (with the recommended tape, and like I said, no more than one thickness ideally) where there are not raw spots, you may want to do that.

Something has not been done the very best if those kind of raw spots have appeared.

I like to let as much air hit the ears as possible.

Poor guy. The vet the breeder used did a number on our guys ears. His first post job had his ears smelling horrible and so raw. His incisions were completely healed but the vet used starter fluid on the tape. This lead to raw open sores on his ears. We brought him to our regular vet who prescribed him a cream. We left them down until they healed again.

Since we were worried about him being sensitive to the tape and all we used mole foam inside. That being said he has a medium crop and a wide bell. This worked for us but I know many people on here swear by the backer rod method, it just didn't work for us.

I hope his ears heal quickly. Id let them be in the meantime.

Starter fluid?! People these days.. So many other ways to take tape off and they choose starter fluid. Sorry to hear that. Looks like you both pulled through, he looks great!
Thank you! And actually the vet put the starter fluid on the tape before tapping it to the ears. I guess its an old school method to make it stay better. But needless to say it made his ears so miserable I could have cried I felt so bad.

This is one of the reasons why you should learn to post yourself. I don’t agree with leaving tape/post on longer than 3-5 days (5days pushing it) especially in the early post surgical days.

In those early days, I would get a worried feeling after a day or two and take it off to inspect. A couple of times I found where my amateur skills screwed something up and I was able to catch it early and fix it. Not saying that a vet is an amateur but we have witnessed that many vets are not-so-good posters....To put complete trust in a vet and leave them posted longer than 4days is asking a lot IMHO.

Leave them down till they heal. It won't hurt the posting process when you start back up again. Please check out the posting methods on this site. Great tutorial AND shows you everything you need to successfully post on your own. Even has a list of materials you'll need to make it easier for you, and pain free for your pup!

The smell could likely be an ear infection. It is pretty common when posting because the air flow is inhibited. I would leave them unposted and clean the ear canal with some ear antiseptic like Zymox or epi-optic or Violet ear. That may help but you still may need a vet visit to get some Tri-Otic.
