It depends with us. When the dogs go outside, there are many times that I don't actually walk out with them, but stand by the door. So they are used to going down the stairs without me. Even if I'm going out with them, there are times I open the door and they go ahead down the stairs. And other times that I make them wait. Those times are when there is a "circus" at the door. You know, excited whining and circling! It may not be exclusively a Dobie thing, but: Anyone else's Dobe wait with you at the top of stairs to make sure you're actually going down? Every day, multiple times per day I have to tell Oji to go ahead and go down the stairs instead of waiting for me to start descending, then walking down past me. It's especially irritating first thing in the morning when my daughter and I are ready to go down the stairs. I don't want him rushing up from behind us and sweeping her down. The stairs are bare hardwood.
O well, at least they wait nice at the door!
Once we had grandchildren, I was very aware of a large Doberman innocently knocking down a child. So I taught him a long time ago, to 'wait' and walk behind us for the very reason you said....I didn't want him rushing down or passed one of the kids and knocking them down. I like him behind us as a 'follower' and in a calm manner. (See: Cesar

Yeah, you're right. I know it's sort of opposite of me to want him to go down the stairs first yet I have him wait at doorways until we've gone through and we give him the ok. Sometimes I will require him to go slowly down the stairs if he's feeling amped up. I try to make sure he touches the last step instead of jumping down from two steps up, and often, making a hard turn on the rug in front of the front door (you know, the rug that I've had to straighten out 150 times with no end in sight). It depends with us. Then I go first and tell them "OK" and they will race down the stairs.

BUT. lol The stairs in the house are different. First off, the upstairs is off limits most of the time anyway. There's no one up there unless we have company so it is 'gated' off to the dogs with a couple of suitcases.Once we had grandchildren, I was very aware of a large Doberman innocently knocking down a child. As long as Oji is hesitant to go ahead of you, I would work with that and make him follow in a calm manner too.
And may I ask, How do you pronounce OJI? Just curious.![]()
LOL! Do you have a rubber back on that? Or does he still mess up that? lol!I try to make sure he touches the last step instead of jumping down from two steps up, and often, making a hard turn on the rug in front of the front door (you know, the rug that I've had to straighten out 150 times with no end in sight).

Mine are all rubber backed (we hard wood throughout the house) and I think I still straighten them 100 times DAILY.LOL! Do you have a rubber back on that? Or does he still mess up that? lol!
Yea, I often think I've going to video 'the back door' at times! They both get pretty excited knowing we are going out. [emoji14]ullhair:![]()
We do have a rug backer which only moves a little when he does his hard turn or hard stop maneuver. The rug is made of jute and is quite flexible. A Pottery Barn item. It gets deformed and displaced quite easily.LOL! Do you have a rubber back on that? Or does he still mess up that? lol!

So, it's when you two are walking together through the house? The only thing I can think of at the moment is that he is making sure you're actually going all the way into the room you're heading toward. That would be the same concept as Oji waiting for me to walk a fair distance down the stairs before he comes down the stairs. Hmmm.Lol the stairs always fun mine won't go all the down without me. I have a question Ares likes to stop in the middle of walking to and from a room and look back and stare at me. It's the weirdest cutest thing I've never seen this before I usually just scratch his butt and then push him forward a little bit hahahahahaha I call it the door stop maneuver lol is this a thing ?
It's when he's infront of me walking from room to room and he will stop in the middle of the hallway and look back at me like are ya still coming ? And stand there for a minute or two till I scratch his butt and then he either walk forward or I'll have to push forward a bit lolSo, it's when you two are walking together through the house? That's pretty funny. Maybe he does it when he doesn't like the room you're going into? Or maybe he's grown accustomed to the attention and scratching. Or maybe he just really wants to make sure his buddy is coming with him. I bet it's that last one. It's when he's infront of me walking from room to room and he will stop in the middle of the hallway and look back at me like are ya still coming ? I dunno sometimes he will do it and I'll have a load of laundry and won't see him and run into him. Like I said it's a door stop maneuver. I'll try to get a picture of it his face is hilarious when he does this! That's pretty funny. Maybe he does it when he doesn't like the room you're going into? I agree that he's probably making sure he's going the same way you are and that you are coming. lol It's cute, until you are carrying the laundry like you said! lol! I hate having to break stride for Buddy and he knows it. I've taught him to 'move along!' so that he isn't tripping me. (been there, done that! ) Most times now, I don't have to say anything. He sees me coming and moves! Most times! lol Atta, Boy!I dunno sometimes he will do it and I'll have a load of laundry and won't see him and run into him.

Mischa does that too. Every single time... she goes in her crate when my fiance goes to bed (much later then me lol) and every time I go to bed she jumps up to follow me. I have to tell her it's mommy's bedtime and to stay on the couch with daddy hahaI don't know if has been mentioned. How about Denali is out cold sleeping on the floor (with snoring) I quietly get up to use the bathroom. Before I even get 3 steps away he's right beside me following me to the bathroom

That's really cute my boy know when I come home too. My jeep is straight piped so I think that's how he knows lol but he's gets all wiggly and his little nubber goes crazy then the intensely loud Dober howl erupts...its really funny. My other dog deegan my chi/ min pin mix becomes very chatty when I come home it cracks me up he sounds like an alien.Probably not just a Dobie thing because I've heard other dogs do the same ...
Last night I ran out to grab some take out. My girl friend stayed at home with our pup. She said our pup was lying down most of the time but a few minutes before I pulled into the driveway he was up and at the back door. He somehow knew I was driving down our street.
