Meet Frannie

Our shelter is temporarily closed to the public because some idiots dropped off a box of puppies with parvo. :tap: Obviously staff is still coming in because there are lots of animals that need care. Some people came in yesterday to surrender their dog. They were told that we are not taking in any animals because of the parvo. Well this morning the first staff member arrived to find Frannie tied to the door. These people were given a list of shelter that could take her, but noooooooo! they had to tie her up in a sweater to the door. :furious: Because we don't have her vaccination records she can't stay at the shelter. So she is staying here untill she can find a more permanent home.
She's the cutest little thing and her cup runs over with sass.

She's tiny, I think they said 6 pounds with 200 pounds of attitude.

I love her! 🥰

And to the people that tied her to the doorknob? Find them for me cuz I need to tie them to a Whipping Post. What kind of people are they? Do they really need to get rid of her? 6 lb of nothing? Come on. Some people! I just don't understand people.

It could be any number of reasons that happen quite often to people.

Sometimes life throws crap your way and different people is going to deal with it differently...

Last time I moved and was needing a rental home I had hell finding homes that I could afford (in the area I wanted to live in) that would allow pets at all. And then if you DO find one that allows pets it is not uncommon to see that they exclude a lot of different breeds and pets that they don't really want around.

This is my current lease and it specifically says that I can't be 'brought onto' this here property any Dobermans. :(

I have to actually list each dog on the lease. Its a handful of pages just on the dogs and dog stuff...

The fenced in / gated back yard is what got me on this place. Not a pasture by a long shot but still an area where the girls can stretch their legs off leash and have some freedom to run around and do some doggie stuff. :)

@Aaron56 thanks, and I agree- not in rescue as I dont think I could stand the heartbreak or avoid going postal on "some people" but a much more evolved soul has observed for every dig dropped off there is most likely a heart broken human out there too.

Seems to be happening more lately and one actual person working a large muni humane society near me said its several things happening at once...

Tuff times...life happens!

There also be times when the dog you 'rescue' is something from hell (that is ALSO infested with every single different kind of worm and parasite known to man currently).

The dog that is going to cost you a metric shit ton in Vet bills and then cost you MORE due to the other behavior issues... :)

Good times! :)

I'm all for finding a good home for an animal when your situation has changed and you can no longer keep them. Life happens, I know. But it's the manner in which this dog was "dropped off." Just tied to a door handle and left.

Plus, I know of a few people who got a dog and just couldn't handle it because they didn't put the time in. :tap: Or they didn't put the thought in before they got it. One person that I know through a friend got one dog, was having a problem with it and wanted to "get rid of it." Before they did, they end up getting another dog because that breed was something that "they've always wanted." Then they end up rid of both of them! :banghead:

I'm willing to bet that most dogs surrendered are not through any fault of the dog and are mainly people that just didn't think before they bought or they don't want to deal with them anymore. The only saving grace for me is that they left them at a shelter instead of dumping them out in the country somewhere like I've seen.

The three people that I know of that got rid of their dogs had no tears. Just relief. And two of them turned around and got another dog! :facepalm:One got a smaller dog, a pug, so maybe that's what she needed all along. Although I still don't think she puts the time in on the dog. And the other one got a Burmese mountain dog from a foster. They barely had it a year and it died of cancer. Then they fostered a Irish Wolfhound for a while and gave it back.

I mean that's all great except they can do that and they couldn't take care of the lab and dachshund that they had? Changing dogs like it's candy.😡

The thing is there NO reason to tie a 6 pound dog to a door especially in a rural area. We have bobcats, bears and other wildlife that could have tortured her to death. The thing is these people were given options other than tying her to a door knob. Sorry but I don't think there is a way to justify what these people did.

That is just NOT the case. This particular rescue works with Purina Farms and their trainers before adopting the dogs out. If a dog has medical problems that requires medication the rescue finds funding for the new owners to cover existing medical issues. The fund raising team at this shelter is simply amazing!

Does your Ridgeback get along with her and vice versa?
They haven't had much time together mostly because Riley is so big and she's so small. Riley is in full on teen mode right now so I'm not sure they will get a lot of play time.

Yep! And add to that they didn't put in the time to train the dog and now you have a monster! It's clear Frannie doesn't have much training and the poor girl is scared to death. Of course we don't even know what her real name is. One of the staff thought she looked like a Frannie so for now that's who she is. I feel like if she had something familiar like her name, it might help.

The good news is Frannie slept well in her crate. She is scared to death outside so I set up a pen and kind of enclosed it so she can't see much more than her little 8x10 space and she does much better.
The plan is take a couple of days and evaluate her and come up with a plan that would be best for her. I go back to the shelter Friday to share my observations and the team will put together a plan that will help her find her forever home.

I hate people....I wish that it wasn't so easy to obtain an animal....ANY kind of animal. Not many people know how to care for a pet. (Now I am just being mean) but you all see it in rescue, and I hear horror stories...."We got the dog for our kids, and they don't care anymore, so he has to be in a crate all day" :complain: I heard someone in the grocery line talking about just starting out with snakes....they keep them in a rubbermaid container! AND he wants to start breeding them!!!! I may be the only one on here who likes snakes; but even if you don't...they don't belong in a plastic box no bigger than themselves. I don't really like zoo's either....
sorry, I'll shut up now!

Go ahead and vent...🔥
I suspect a higher than average % of dog owners prefer them to a lot of people, esp as we get older...myself included.
I have no idea how you folks do it at shelters but God Bless You!
I cant even look at rescue ads here or FakeBook, sorry...too heart-breaking.

And that's why so many Dobermans are surrendered at around 7 months, the challenging age when some people don't want to put the time or effort to work them through the phase to get the most faithful dog ever.

The last rescue dog I had was a nightmare from hell. :)

Rescued from a coworker that was about to kill it...

After a couple of years of trying my ass off to train / educate / modify the behavior on, etc. I came to a realization.

'Sometimes' when you find a dog in a trashcan - You need to consider WHY someone would have put it there to begin with.

When I eventually dumped my problem dog off at a rescue I 'tried' to give them a run down on the long list of behavior problems that the dog had and they were completely uninterested. I will bet money that by the next morning they were wishing they had taken the time to listen when they showed up at their place to discover a destroyed crate and their new dog running free likely destroying the inside of wherever they had it at! :)

Just because a dog 'looks' cute does not mean it is automatically an angel. :)

Ugh. It's bad enough they don't know how to keep them but as soon as I read the word breeding, audible words came out of my mouth. And they weren't pretty. If it's one thing I can't stand it's when people want to breed any kind of animal when they know nothing about them. Or what they're going to do with the offspring. Or don't even know how to take care of the parents themselves and yet they're already thinking about breeding!

I have a mixed feeling about zoos. I think they can be very educational in learning/seeing animals that we will never ever see it in our lifetime. But it's the care of them that always needs improvement. I know we've come a long way in some zoos. But I still get choked up to this day remembering how elephants were kept chained to the floor in a small glass area inside a building. Probably never saw the light of day. And chained to one spot. 😭

Elephants have always been my favorite and I remember going into the elephant house and seeing them. The Wonder of seeing them and loving to see them was overpowered by what I thought was cruelty. I know most zoos now have them out free and some do not even have elephants anymore. I found that out when it had been years and years and years since I've been to a zoo and I found out that they were gone. I was very disappointed. That was the one thing I went there hoping to see. Again that is one of the pluses of a zoo. To see an animal that you know you'll never see in your lifetime in real life. But if there was good reason that they were gone, I'd prefer that to see them chained in a small area. I don't want to ever see that again.

I agree. I can't look either. 😔 They'd all be coming home with me.🥴

This is also true.

We got a dog once that (details withheld to protect the innocent) the breed rescue begged my BW (volunteering while mouning last one)
to "just foster for a week or two"...
well, you know how that goes...

That dog was well loved but had intractable issues due to trauma...we had to be VERY careful to manage him, so he wouldnt be triggered. He died peacefully after a good life much loved but also a borderline liability.

"life is like a box of chocolates"...🧐

In fairness taking a dog from a coworker is not the same as a dog from a legitimate shelter. What you are describing should NEVER happen from a place that really cares about the dog.
The shelters I work with just wouldn't let that happen. PEROID!
The legit shelters, IMHO do NOT kill dogs just because they have been there a certain amount of time. Do NOT let dogs go that have problems be it behavorial or medical without some kind of support. And most importantly don't let just ay dog go to just any home.

I hope that both you and @Aaron56 understand that these are NOT the dogs, but the people which is a major reason shelters exist.
