Doberman Population in your area

We see mostly Labs, GSDs, Golden Retrievers and designer mutts around here. I was surprised when I saw 2 beautiful Great Danes out in a fence the other day on a street I take all the time. I'm guessing they're usually in the house but were out for a little romp and potty break.
Great Danes are magnificent creatures aren't they? I had the great pleasure of meeting 2 of these gentle giants up close while Kaiser was "getting his nails done". There are 2 more in my neighbourhood but I have never been able to meet them during a walk.

At the risk of being considered racist I'll share: I've seen that some black people have an inordinate fear of dogs (probably not just Dobermans).
I have noticed this too. The cable guy did not want to meet Kaiser no matter what. We are trying to socialize him to as many different looking people as possible but it's especially hard with black people. The cable guy said they (he was Jamaican) tended to keep them as guard dogs in the yard and that there was never any interaction other than feeding the dog so the dogs were too vicious and he feared them. I tried to explain that Kaiser is not like that but he didn't want to meet him so we kept him crated. We have also taken him to school yards so he can meet kids. Black kids tend to stay distant but are curious enough to watch the others interact. I guess we'll have to settle for proximity for now!

It seems to go in spurts here in my neck of so cal?
Might not see one for a while, then see several.
I try to talk to as many owners as I can when I see them. Passed out quite a few DCF business cards.
I know there is (or was?) a pair here in my neighborhood.
And here in Riverside is a pretty well respected vet that does crops. So, if I were to need a :dobe: fix, just go there on any given Saturday and there will be several in line for crop aftercare.

Met a vested working dog at the grocery a few years ago, her owner was an legally blind older gal. I couldn't help myself but chat with her, my kids spotted her across the store. She was very kind and after hearing we had Dobes invited the kids closer to meet her.

Not that I have visited (given past visitors to the site ;) ) but the breeder Aldercrest Doberman is litterly less than 5 miles as a crow flies from my driveway. So, there might be a couple close by, lol.

As to reactions?
I find usually one of two kinds.
Complete fear and or dismay as to why someone would own such a "vicious breed" or the complete opposite. They  Dobes and either own(ed) one at some point in life or knew one that changed their perception of the breed so, they had to approach us to meet mine.

There was that one couple I overheard as we walked past, something to the effect of " I don't know why someone would own a dog breed like that".....Said that :censored: on the wrong day, lol. They got an ear full :D

There are several in the lower keys.
Mine are the best looking.:D
People usually comment on how beautiful they are. I get a person here or there that tell me Bogie has an intense face. Hahaha
Most people want to pet and love on them. I allow petting but not hugging or kissing. That freaks me out.
I'm also surprised at how many people want to kiss Kaiser! But we don't do kisses so when they ask for a kiss he doesn't know what it means and this pleases me immensely :thumbsup2: We also get a lot of compliments from people "what a beautiful dog" is the most common and most heartwarming. And when he was a very young puppy, the most common remark was "look at the size of those paws!"

I am prepared to give an earful if this ever happens to us. So far, I've had a few incidents where someone's dog drags their owner over to meet Kaiser and I hear the owner saying "let's be nice". Like as if Kaiser would be anything but nice. All he ever wants to do is play. The play bow is his favorite move!

I put Daisy in a sit/stay in the middle of the road and walked a good 20-30 feet away to these people. The whole time in my mind thinking " please hold that stay, Please hold that stay" :D
Informed them of the history of this breed circa WW2, the Marines lives saved, the statue and memorial on Guam, etc. the dedication, the devotion to their people/families, etc.
They were speechless and a bit stunned.

She held that stay, and impressed the hell out of them and me! :)

Good job, Daisy! They are so impressive. Even more so when they know you are trying to show them off ;) Bless em for knowing it! One time I ended up taking Kaiser along to a friends housewarming party. He was having loose stool issues and I felt it was safer to have him in the car where we could give him frequent potty breaks (if my friends don't have dogs, I don't bring Kaiser inside). Several people at the party wanted to meet Kaiser (he stole the show!) and each time we opened the hatch (he's in the back of an SUV), he just sat there cool as a cucumber: Oh, are you new people here to meet me? Ok, I'm just gonna lay here in the most perfect Down pose, look around innocently while my people brag about me. I'll pretend not to notice.

He was the picture of perfection despite his tummy issues. He literally saved his poops until no one was looking. And no accidents in the car, of course. What a boy!

Interestingly enough, we have 6 other dobermans on my street within a half mile on either side of me! One woman with 4 (2 special needs and 2 geriatrics), a young man with a beautiful Rescue boy, and Miesha's gorgeous playmate Natasha. (Pic below from last July)

Miss my baby.

It's rare to see a Doberman where I live, there are two a couple houses down from my mom. Beautiful red male and black girl, however they do not ever leave their yard and if they are outside and a leaf blows by they go off like crazy and do not stop. They are good looking dogs and well taken care of, but from what I perceive meant more as property protection than hobbyist pets. A tiki bar I worked at had a giant white Dobe that was a semi regular, very very sweet gentle giant. An ex of mine was a pool boy and one of the houses he serviced were BYB breeders with a red and black pair, I never got to meet them but he would go on about how enthralling they were. Other than those few occurrences, I can't think of a single other time I've seen any.

When I take Brinks for walks, it's apparent he's a mutt but no one is ever really sure of what. People that are more familiar with shepherds comment that he's Shepherd, and people more familiar with Dobes see the Dobe. We were recently at the sand bar this past weekend and the neighboring boat had a Shepherd of some sort, the guy asked if Brinks was a "really skinny Shepherd" :( it kind of hurt my feelings because yes he is tall and lean like a Dobe but he is by no means small at over 90 lbs and there is not a rib to be seen!

I just remembered my SO dad had two male pups years ago before I ever met him and ended up rehoming them... he's not a responsible person and YIKES! Also their family friend (who is a great dog owner) had a few of them over the years. Fairly recently the last one passed on and he hasn't brought himself to get another yet, though he does enjoy coming over to see ours.

I forgot to add that I see quite a few Great Danes. Our neighbor down the street always has one and always adopts. I've seen them frequently on the beach, in the pet store, and at the same tiki bar I worked. There's a lady that has five she takes to the dog park, she drives an Excursion just to have room for them all! Lovely dogs.

I live in a rural town. I think I've only seen/heard of one or two other dobies in the general area. Where we go for our summers up north, I've never seen one. People around here are so unfamiliar with the breed that they don't even recognize an uncropped dobie. There's one a few miles away that was found and no one believed it was a Dobermann because he had floppy ears lol.

We have a lot of hunting type breeds and then a lot of pit/bully mixes.

Reactions vary. A lot. I get some people who think he's just gorgeous and some who are very uncomfortable. It was pretty much the same way with my old pit. For the most part though, I'd say most people are just aloof towards him. It's actually kinda nice. My old husky was an attention drawer and eeeeveryone wanted to pet him and it kinda got old. I literally had an employee follow us around the pet store the entire time because he was so infatuated with the dog. Lol. I think a lot of the apprehension with Kaizer is just his sheer size. Especially when you see him next to me, he looks huuuuge. People around here just tend to be hesitant of big dogs. We ran into a Dane pair at the store once and the owner was amazed that I not only asked to pet them, but let me kids pet them as well. They said that never happens :(

Interesting info.!

Curious: All the Danes you see, are any cropped? I just like to collect stats on this stuff. Cropping seems pretty uncommon in Danes these days, but not as uncommon as in Boxers. On the other hand, I have noticed that, surprisingly, in TV ads I see the Danes cropped maybe even more often than not.

Wow, one person bringing five good-sized, active, rough-playing to a dog park? They must be well trained!

Oh, and I don't blame you for feeling a bit hurt by the comment that your dog is "skinny." That could have been put much more nicely.

None of the ones I have seen were cropped, and as I said I've seen many of them. There actually was a rescue that took in about 50 of them from a mill that got shut down and i met a few of them at the beach, they were trying to acclimate them for adoption... can you imagine living your whole life in a cage! Despicable! Overall they are very sane and mellow mannered dogs, I wouldn't hesitate to own one if I could. My neighbor that always has one drives a Suzuki Samurai around... with the dog taking up the entire back! It's a sight to see lol

I forgot to add (I've been doing this a lot lately) that they're really not rough they're just so big it's easy for them to inadvertently hurt other dogs they play with. When my pit was a puppy and I didn't know any better I had her at the dog park and a beautiful, one year old black male and her just hit it off and adored each other. They had a lot of fun but she came up to his knee maybe haha and at some point he accidentally stepped on her and I had to put a halt to the rumpus time.

I have had two isolated sightings in 4 yrs, and this was years apart! Last one I saw I was so excited I stopped them to chat. hehe

Here in Colorado Springs I see them occasionally, but far more fluffy breeds--pyranese, Bernese, husky/malamute, and Aussies. I know of a pretty large group in Denver, which probably correlates to them having a LOT more working training facilities.

As for attitude and reaction, my neighbors across the street once said that they "would offer to help with [my] stuff, but Doberman are aggressive." The neighbor behind me has come to love Juneau and let's her 5 year old and 18 month old pet and play with him, but she did initially tell me that I am lucky he has a large head, because Doberman brains get too large and cause them pain which makes them turn aggressive. There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding since they are not "dog park dogs," and I frequently get told that he would like dogs more or be happier or less dog aggressive if I let him play with them at the park more (Juneau is fine with other dogs by the way, and has never shown any aggression, I just select his play dates carefully. This is from people who do not know him and do not understand why I won't join them at the park). Trainers are largely wary of "unaltered male Doberman" here, but trainers and the vet love him once they meet him.

The cable guy did not want to meet Kaiser no matter what
My cable guys were happy to see Buddy even though they are supposed to tell customers to put their dogs away while they are there! lol (I blurred the one guys face. Don't want to get him in trouble. :) They were both great guys. Courteous, helpful and polite. )

Oh! And back on topic, I never see Dobermans here. :(

This is definitely interesting! I moved out to the Chicago suburbs about a year ago and it takes two hands to count the Dobies I've seen. My LuLa Roe lady has a beautiful older, red girl (I squealed when I saw her, I think she thought I was scared at first - how sad!), we've spotted another in someone's back yard, and the rest we've seen at either the dog park (four I can think of) or at dog events.

But yes! People always say, "I haven't seen a Doberman in FOREVER! So-and-so used to breed them in the 70s and 80s." Guess that's when they were popular and everyone had them? Then GSDs and Bullies took over?

People are also surprised how not huge Rubie is. Of course the perception is that they're 100+lbs dogs that will rip your face off if you look at them wrong.

We had the internet guy here yesterday and on initial meeting I left Albert out to realize he was okay, but I did crate him while he was working in the house just because I didn't 100% trust him not to get protective with the guy sitting in my computer chair and stuff. Della would have climbed in his lap if I let her. LOL

i don't use Facebook. (weird I know, never did tho)
Up here in Edgemont where I live now, the off-leash parks are not at all busy so mostly its just us with him there. But I know what you mean, if another dog runs up to him and start barking in his face and hump him, he will not tolerate that for very long. There is a lady I always see walking her dog, a young brown Dobie, almost every day. Thats the only one I see around here.
In Crescent Heights where I lived, a couple of others regularly showed up at Rotary park.
At Sleeprover where he has daycare, there are 4-5 other Dobies too.
