American VS European Doberman

The way I understand snipey is that the nose comes to a point, vs being a blocked off wedge. So the end of the nose to the bottom of jaw should have a flat line vs pointed together.

One thing I notice is his snout gives the appearance of being just a bit shorter in length than some.

That is something I hear from various people. Most hate it. I'm okay because he has a shorter thicker neck. I like that better than that swan neck look. He also has a blockier snout, I like that better than the pointy look.
He was 6 months old in this pic. His head never really changed much

Drake is a handsome boy. I love how he looks!

Thanks! I love him too! Honestly I don't care what anybody else thinks. Cause he is close enough to perfect for me.;)
Also anybody can feel free to post their honest opinion. Ya won't hurt my feelings if you don't like him. His looks, temperament and most everything about him is what works here. If it doesn't work for you, that's okay. We are all entitled to our opinions.

Actually, that group of illustrations posted in this thread are pretty informative. I can take a pic of another group of drawings and info. from a Dobe book I have and post it here. May do that tonight.

Now, "wet?" Are you talking about the Dobe being a "dry mouthed" breed meaning they should not drool?

I'm trying to remember what I was reading about when I saw that descriptor, but I would almost swear it wasn't about drool or something that would kind of make sense...(but, I don't have a great memory)...I just remember thinking, "How in the hell do you use 'wet' to describe that?"

Y'all know I'll never be trying to show my boy; I just kind of look at things and then decide how he compares...usually just because I wonder (not that it matters at all) if he looks more Euro or NA...I know, I know...I would know that if I did things right.

@GennyB when you look at Drake individually or as a whole, he has that everything look. His abilities as a service dog and his abilities as a protector of you, to be able to discern what is justified behavior and how he should respond is just a part of what makes him a perfect and beautiful dog.
He is impressive in many facets not just his looks. When I look at his eyes in the pictures he has a kind, intelligent and adventuresome soul behind those eyes. That is where beauty comes from.

I am anxious to see pictures of him with Rumor. He will have a running and hopefully swimming playmate.
Rumor will learn many things from him!!

My first Dobe had a snout on the shorter end of the spectrum.

Actually, he strayed from the standard in some other ways as well and especially given his military crop, I got asked on several occasions if he was a Pit / Dobe cross. He was a Red too, which I'm sure added to the misidentification.

He looks very "dog-y" to me, which I prefer. I like dog to look very masculine dog and very feminine bitches.

Is he very bitchy looking? I don't recall thinking that when I've seen photos. Some people are dumb and can't see masculine/feminine traits.
Yes, people mistake him for a female dog. He definitely is lacking in masculine appearance in the head and face. He's also the size of a female Doberman.

It's just a natural thing. Dog person, non-dog person – they just get the impression he's a she. Oh little Oji.

I agree. I don't think anyone has ever doubted he is a dog.

I find this discussion fascinating. Just so many types of one breed. I will be the first to admit I know very little about the pure bred dog world. For whatever reasons it just never mattered to me. Then I rescued my first doberman and all that changed.
@Horselady is this true of all breeds. Do they all have so many types? Maybe I don't pay enough attention but when I go to a dog show I only really see it in dobermans. When you look at the various breed rings ex: Labradors, they all look pretty similar, at least to me. You look at a ring full of dobies and you see lots of different types. Maybe I'm missing something because of my lack of knowledge?

Mistaken by whom? By you????

Because, I can't imagine a stranger saying that! Well...not to his face!

He is all boy...all Dog....all beautiful Dobe!...not just blowing smoke here...I love that guy!

I'm not sure. I haven't shown in years. Poodles only really had one "type" but we would see different spray up jobs and trim styles by region. Akitas do have a more American type and a more Japanese type. It was recently explained to me they are talking about making two varieties because they're so different. Shepherd's have a less extreme "all breed type" and a more extreme "specialty type". The other breeds I've handled seemed to be more consistent.

Me too. When I got my last dobe he was a rescue. I wasn't sure what type of dog I would get. All I had was his birthdate and breed type when I picked him. Never thought about showing since I had no papers for him. Now fast forward to a better internet and I started looking at all the different dobies out there. All I wanted was a "nice" looking dog, then I fell down the rabbit hole and looking at breeders around the world!!! But, my wife talked some sense into me and went for health before looks. We found a breeder not too far away with health checked dogs that might not win any shows, but will be great healthy pets :)

BTW I prefer the look of Euro mixed with American. Muscled, but no pidgeon chests.

My favorite. I always say mix the 2 and you have the perfect doberman. My boy that I posted pics of above is a mix, guess that's why I like his look so much. He is a nice blend and has most of the things I like NA bred and EU and not many of things I don't like about either.

I have more than one person (including judges) tell me that the doberman competition is the toughest. I'm leaning toward the reason being there are so many different types. Must depend on what type the judge likes.

A wet mouth means they don't have a tight flew. Dobermans should have a dry mouth.

There is a difference between "type" and style. What you guys are referring to as type of dog is actually style of the dog. Breed type refers to the quality of the dog in reference to others of it's breed and what sets the dog off as the breed. My Aria is an extremely "typey" bitch. She holds well to the breed standard. Her daughter Aoife is typey, but a fancier style. Make sense?
