American VS European Doberman

Iceman you have never owned NA Doberman. Is it right?
Their behaviour is very similar. That's true they have different look and some NA dogs don't have a good drive... but they are perfect loving pets.
Euros are more work. They don't like strangers and may challenge other dogs while most NA is easy to deal with.

I know at least 3 NA Dobermans in our area who earned Sch titles. It's extremely difficult to get into the club here. I am sure the numbers would be much higher if the clubs were more accessible.

Asha is getting ready for Utility obedience ring. She is bored in the class like other Dobermans but we have no chance to get into the Sch club... sad. That's not about dogs. That's all about people.

After all, NA dobie is just a mutated brother of the European dobermann..
Selective breeding by incompetent breeders have destroyed very important qualities of the breed in the states.
This destruction has been so severe that some people seem to think of the two as two different breeds!
I'm going to disagree on a couple of your points. The NA Dobe is no more the mutated brother than the Euro Dobe is. People too often forget that these lines go back to the same dogs and that each line, EACH line, chose to "mutate" the dogs to how they wanted them.
I will also disagree with the blanket statement that all NA Dobes lack some of the important qualities. Some of the show line might not have the high drives that you should find in the Dobe but there are several lines that do have the drives and do quite well in things like Schutzhund.

When i said "important qualities" have been destroyed i was not only referring to the drive....physical qualities have also been destroyed.
Dobermann is classified as a working dog.........to be more precise, they were bred as personal protection dogs.
To be able to do personal protection work, a dog needs more than a "play" drive..:)

You did not answer my question Iceman. Did you ever own NA Doberman?

I have two Euros.... and I don't see significant difference in personalities with my previous NA Doberman.
He was protective and fearless and had a high prey drive.

That's my NA Doberboy... look at his expression. Do you think this dog was lacking a nerve?

I do agree with Iceman about the nerve in NA dogs, but what I believe he is saying more specifically is that the majority of NA lines and dogs in general are not the working dog temperament anymore, because the temperament issue in the USA was very bad 20-30 years ago... Dobies had a bad rap and because of it breeders bred for a less extreme or intense driven dog and focused more intently on a more 'family oriented' dog temperament to try to lose the bad rap that Dobermann's had... we still have issues with dogs in this country with regards to 'dangerous breeds'... no working dog wants to fall into the category of a 'dangerous breed' due to the legislitation around it. This is a theory as to why the Dobermans in the USA and EU are so different now.
Ice is correct in a general population of this breed here on this continent, but, there are exceptions to every rule and it is also correct when Jess said that the NA Doberman is no more of a mutution than the current breed standard dogs in EU today... the EU dogs are more massive in bone, far heavier of build, more 'mollosser type' like a Rottie and not as much like the greyhound as the breed was just 30-40 years ago in EU... so each continents breeders made choices based on what the consensus was with regards to how the breed should look or act in temperament.
Each of those choices changed the breed and the continents clearly have different value which drove those choices. Hence the differences... yet similarities

I like Euros for their look.. that's the main reason I own two European Dobermans.
NA breeders accomplished the fancy chesty curvy shape. I prefer my boy muscular body and his strong top line and his powerful movement.
He is not good for NA show ring... they prefer more refined look. He is too cobby. Hmmmm... that's hard to accept.

Talking about working dogs... there are many wimps in Europe too.
Many European show dogs don't have "a nerve". My Gino is a great pet but I doubt he would succeed as a working dog.
His sister Asha was bred in Canada from European lines. She has a good nerve. Fearless and driven dog. I am working hard to involve her into Schutzhund.
The littermate of my Bailey (you see his in the picture) got Sch title being 100% NA dog.

My point is... there are good and bad dogs on both sides of the ocean.

"My point is... there are good and bad dogs on both sides of the ocean."

There are poor, good, great and excellent examples of the breed on both sides of the pond... but I would like to clarify that all are GOOD dogs!
but we love them all regardless of how excellent of an example they are! :2cents

I have a euro question, for all those who have eruo bloodline dogs; rooster has euro blood and your can definitely see it. He is stocky, has a big, filled out head, dark red/rust markings and the 'straight line' body conformation. But theres one that that I havnt seen in any other dobie and it's kind of worrying me. He is 5.5 months, and his hair seems longer than it should be on his back. I thought it was just the puppy coat but it just keeps growing.. It's thickest on the spot between his shoulder blades and is long enough now that it's started to 'wave' (just short of an inch long) I'll post pictures tomorrow on this thread but I'm wondering why his coat is like this? It's shiny and healthy and his head, chest, legs are normal length. I mean it doesnt really matter I guess, I mean it doesn't effect him health wise (actually it probably helps keep him warm) but it looks odd. Our friend has an American dobie (same age) and she has a sleek coat from her nose to tail..

I have noticed that Jakes hair is a bit longer and softer than Max lol ..Jake being Euro and Max American but Jake is still a wimpy cold butt:rofl::rofl:and Max rules so in my house anyway the NA doberman rules!! Euro or American I think it's in the personality of the individual dog!! Not that it matters they don't have to win any ribbons here,, but I love em both!:D

I think it has to do with the breeder he came from, not necessarily cause he's euro, especially since you said it's wavy? Either way, like DV and Maureen said, it's not like it matters since you won't be showing or breeding your dog...love them regardless and enjoy their wet dober kisses! :)

And both of my dogs have the dobertraits I love, they love people, they listen and are easy to train, exeptionally smart! Truth be known I like the American for looks a bit more but I see the beauty of both! I really like Max the best ,he's kinda of a combination of American and Euro for the fact that he is on the larger side for an American. Jake and Max are a bit different in personality but nothing I don't believe more than you would find within lets say the same litter of any dobermans some are more aggressive etc than others be they Euro or American lol ,thanks for letting me babble:bag: The next pup I get will probably be an American. I like Suzan's dogs very much for example, they are streamlined but with plenty of bone and beautiful heads! That is the type I prefer and it's all personal taste to me just as cropped or docked whichever ya like is fine by me lol live and let live
