Sores inside 12 week pup ears from first posting

They will sometimes pull them in when they're really alert but the two photos above are a good example between pockets and just pulling them in a bit when really alert. Part of it depends on the ear set on the head too.

New question. I have to repost every 2nd day or the post in the right ear pops out at the bottom. I am very careful to make sure the post is all the way down and the ear is stretched up snug. I have been questioning if the ears match.... I had another person also look in case I was being paranoid and they agreed with me. There is not as much bell on the right ear as there is on the left ear. The left ear stands - always. The pictures were taken between posting this morning. It's a bit difficult to get a "good" picture on a moving target. Is this going to continue to give me trouble because of less bell or is it coincidence that ear doesn't stand as well as the one with more bell. I am pretty disappointed to say the least.......

If it is deep in the ear canal it should stay unless you have rough-housing with another dog or your puppy is pawing at it. Normal activity should not make it pop out. The canal is shaped like an L so you will hit rock bottom and the rod can't go sideways into the delicate parts of the ear. Nothing wrong with doing it every 2 days except that it's a bother.

Your pup & the ears are looking good! The end result will be great and nobody notices the variance in shape/size on ears once they mature. I think most of us here have seen our puppies ears "not match". Keep up the good work, all is well.

I had a boy that would constantly get sores in the bell and/or the posts would pop out. I've posted a quite a few ears now so it wasn't a lack of not posting properly... I moved to half posts and they worked just fine for him. As long as the base is solid and you make sure that the half post is long enough to be supported by the "knuckle" of the ear (red circle), it should be just fine. Worth a try for you.

Thank you! She does start scratching and buggering on day two so I think she's doing it. She's also pretty wild at times (no other dogs) You sure help my insecurities on if this is going well. I can't thank you enough!! Have a great day!

Things have been going very well after getting lots of helpful advice on Doberman Chat! Such a great group. I have all the rust shaken off and have been posting Kardi's ears like a pro again. She's the most "energetic" Dob pup I have ever had..... with that said I have been changing out the posts every 48 hours. She is hard on the tape (plus I don't think it's the best tape) I changed out her posts last night. The picture I am attaching is from in between posts. It all looked just fine, no red, sores etc. It has been fine since the initial "tampon posting" fiasco....... During the night (she is kenneled) she must have decided to dig one of her posts out. She literally went through the outer layer of skin- right where I need to place the bottom tape. I put a nonstick gauze over it with antibiotic salve. Then I (loosely as always) re-taped it. She is 4 1/2 months old and I would really prefer to leave her ear down to heal. I am concerned this could cause problems. I foresee it being easily 4-6 days to completely heal if not longer. Of course I didn't take a pic before I re-taped. There is NO way to tape the bell of the ear below this sore. Above is probably about mid ear to slightly lower. Thoughts anyone? Her ears stand pretty well without the posts. It's her right ear she tore. Her left ear has literally stood since she had 48 hours of posting. Thanks!

They're looking good but at this age when she's teething, I wouldn't risk leaving the post out since this is the time period where a lot of ears will fail.

I think the gauze is a good idea.

You are doing a great job. Keep doing what you are doing.

In the end of it all, you are not going to notice any discrepancies if there is any at all!!

I wouldn't leave them down that long either. That would set you back way too far and possibly worse. I'd use gauze and maybe change them daily to two days so you can keep an eye, clean, reapply Neosporin and repost. The vet (not my regular vet) wanted me to leave the ears out of posts for two weeks for a mild ear infection and I was like, haha ok. I'm not doing that. I'll just clean more often every time I apply meds and change posting methods to something more breathable.

Hi! I am back again (since January) My pup is now 6 months old. Her left ear is still standing, it has been literally since the first post of 48 hours- then posts removed because of sores for a week, and back to posting using the backer rod. All has been going ok - have not posted the left ear in WEEKS because it's fine. Her right ear stands for a bit when I first take the post out but not more than a day so I have been continuously posting. As of this past week or so I can't get the post to stay in. I have moved to a 1/2 inch backer rod with 6 wraps of ducktape for sturdiness. It has gotten to the point where I might have to repost two times in one day because she shakes her head and the bottom pops out. I put the same tape I have been using all along in "reverse" for it to be sticky. The post is all the way down in the bottom of the bell (no doubt on this) I then wrap the entire ear (I was just using 3 strips prior) and it looks just as solid as can be. She definitely has less bell on her right ear than her left. I am about going nuts- I can't be undoing and reposting twice a day. They used to stay in for 48 hours. She is not scratching or even rough housing, shaking can do it. I have attached pictures of the post and also of what they look like when I first remove the post. She rarely relaxes the left ear but she can and does occasionally. Any thoughts please? Thanks so much in advance!!

I saw this tutorial from a while back. It involves a liquid brush-on adhesive rather than reverse taping.

It may be worth a try since it is different than what you have been doing? I have never tried it but have noted it in case I am floundering on posting with my next pup in case we need it.? It might keep your post in on that ear longer than having to repost every day or more?

It looks like you have a cotton ball at the bottom? If so that might be what's pushing it out. I use the method mentioned above using the adhesive and have never used a cotton ball or anything else.

Also, if the tape and stuff is still in place, I just pop the post back in and leave it alone.

Thanks for your quick response! I did try the glue earlier- oh what a mess. I have a major head shaker.... any other thoughts?

None from me other than keep trying? Maybe she will acclimate to it and shake her head less (although I do know you've been trying for a while)? Maybe some others will have something better than that.

Sometimes they will shake their heads until the adhesive completely dries. It helps to distract them by feeding them or taking them outside while the adhesive dries.

Thanks much! I don't see her shaking less... and it takes very little... this just started. (the less than a day business)

Thanks much, she is not easily distracted by anything... she's a challenge doberman for me, my 11th........ a REAL challenge.

Just a thought…
Maybe she feels the unevenness of just one backer rod and wants to throw the right one out? Be more work, but maybe try posting both ears to be even?

Have to make sure the post are seated all the way in the bottom and then immediately do play, walk, mental games or other distractionary measures to take her mind of it.

This ^^^

- I know you are getting that post as deep as it will go, you've been around the block with so many Dobes! I have limited experience, but the #1 reason for head-shaking with posts - and able to pop them out - is not being seated deep enough. They shake their heads because they feel/hear the wiggle or movement. If you've ever used those foam earplugs, you squeeze them then stick deep in your ear and they expand - if you don't get it deep enough and the foam expands, you can feel every wiggle and hear outside the plug. It's so annoying you have to pull it out and re-do it. Once well seated, I quit thinking about them at all, at least that's my experience. So maybe try going back to smaller rod with the extra tape for sturdiness.

she's a challenge doberman for me, my 11th........ a REAL challenge.
For just the ears or over-all personality? I'm an old-timer and I'm seeing so many Doberman puppies with behavior challenges - use to be they were so easy!
