Meet Atlas!

Hello everyone!

Just found this forum and excited to post my doberman puppy, Atlas! He was born on April 8th, so almost 19 weeks old now.

Atlas is my very first dog and first doberman as well, so I have been learning alot (and struggling) on his ear posting. I'll post a few pictures on how he is doing now, and hopefully you guys have some advice on moving forward for Atlas. My goal is to learn and compete with him.

His right ear looks good, although still flops if unwrapped, while his left ear has stood almost immediately after his stitches were out, but leans into his head. I just found the backer rod method, and may switch to that over the moleskin cones he's wearing in the pictures.

If anyone has any advice, I'd love to hear it! I feel like I'll keep learning new things about the breed until I die haha.

After a day, his left ear leans in and has a deeper pocket ontop of his head. His right ear has more of a bump, not much pocket at all.

Welcome! Lots of threads here with helpful information for first time doberman owners.

I would absolutely switch to the backer-rod method. It doesn’t look like his ears are supported enough. The foam rod will sit inside the base of his ear and with just a few pieces of tape, you can get them nice and straight (including those ear tips).

Thank you for the reply! Yes I see now that his tips are left without any support, I'll be picking up the supplies list I found on this site to try my hand at it this afternoon. My fear is that his ears are hardening with my crappy supports.

Welcome from Minnesota! :welcome: Handsome boy and congrats on entering the world of Dobermans!

I agree that he needs to be switched to the backer rod method so there's more support from the canal up.
Here's a step by step tutorial and once you've done it a time or two, it's easy.
