Doberman head and body shapes?

I will. I'm at work on a 24 right now. I'm pretty positive the breeder flat out lied about Vader's lineage. I should have suspected something when his litter had red, black, and blues in it. The father could have been a different one than the one I was shown. I'm getting suspicious that his family tree isn't all Doberman. His mother IS very healthy, and looked great to me though. He has a thick tail like a Lab, waaayyy too long of hair on his back that is wavy, and a very "wet" mouth too. I'm happy, he's a pet. If I had paid a load of $$$ with hopes of showing him, yeah I'd be pissed. My wife says he's perfect....

Here's some from yesterday, I'll take some more tomorrow when I get home. His back is straighter than in the pics, he didn't likeI' being up on those very much.

I'm with your wife!...he's perfect...he loves you and is a good boy! He doesn't want to be on those things, but is doing it because you asked him to...with his little eyes saying, "Is this right, and can I get down now?" Sweet boy...what more could you ask for? I'm too sensitive to ask for a critique of Jax!! (Yeah, I'm weak!)...but he is perfect, too! (Quirky ears and all his other faults...but perfect!)

That's actually what you want since he looks more Euro. I'm still not sure about the pic thing but I'm thinking it might have more to do with some update i-phones had than the board since nothing has been changed on our end. You'll just have to use that Canon instead of the phone.

But the phone is easier and yep Ares is a euro lol I can count on one hand the number of closed mouth pics I get lol

I do see that the tail is notably thick. I was just saying that it would be less of a visual concern if it were docked shorter. I'd much rather see a thick tail than one too thin.

My first Dobe had a tail on the thicker end of the spectrum. I had a theory back then, and I'm not sure that it's untrue, that a thick tail means thick vertebrae and thick bones. Anyone have thoughts on this theory?

I agree with your theory. Shadow who is a Euro is thick boned and her tail is thick as well. Compared to Princess who is more American, Shadow's front legs- the wrist part is almost twice as wide. If I can figure out how to upload pics again I'll add it. Shadow is solid. My husband and I say she's built like a Rottie.

I think the thing I like most about Drake as far as looks, is his head. His has a nice blunt wedge and almond shaped eyes. Decent under jaw, at least you can see it when his mouth is closed.
He is light in the fore chest but has a lean muscled body. I keep him leaner than most because I can't stand a fat dog.
I know most true confo people wouldn't like him because he has a shorter, thick neck but at least it is proportionate to his head. I personally like it, just not a fan of the swan neck look.
Is he perfect? Far from it but he is more than his looks. I love that he has been so healthy and has an outstanding temperament, both I would take over looks any day.

Actually, I do agree. I see what you're saying. Especially now that I look at the overall body profile seen in both those pictures. Of course in the pic of Oji, he was not self-stacked as well as Drake in his pic.

I see the similarities in the head as well, though in Drake, I see a better looking, less snipey head. Drake has, to my eye, a slightly short snout, which is an attractive look but perhaps not what most confo. judges would deem perfect? Really, Oji's and Drake's snouts might be similar lengths, but the difference might be that Oji's is less substantial and thus it does not look short in length.

I am still flattered though. I consider Drake a great-looking Doberman and the fact you'd say ours look similar, is nice to hear.
Of course, I also take heart in the fact that Drake was 70 lbs. for quite a while, then put on weight at some point. I hope Oji graduates one day to at least 75 lbs. or even 80. I know size doesn't matter – at least in terms of 10 or 15 lbs. this way or that – but I maintain that if a dog's main job is deterrent, visual appearance and presence is vital. This goes for the look of the head and face as well – physiognomy.

The biggest differences I see between Drake and Oji in the body profile viewed from the side are that, in Oji, the top line takes that upward curve just forward of the mid-point of the body, and that Oji's tail is set on quite low. I feel this has to do with Oji's pelvis angle. Oji's breeder – whom I respect and appreciate, and who is certainly respected in the working Doberman world – recently told me which ancestor is probably responsible for this tail set.

I personally like the shorter nose and neck, looks more substantial to me. When I think doberman, I don't think long skinny neck. While looking for a pup, I went to several dog shows to meet potential breeders. OMG, some of the dogs that won looked like swans. Makes them look delicate, not a good look for a doberman.
I found it interesting that Judges didn't seem to mind Drake's short nose and neck. They said it was because he was balanced. I should post his critiques. In the international shows you sit down with the judges after you show and they give you a written critique of your dog.
Like I said, Drake is not perfect, in fact lacking a great deal in some areas. I'm just fine with it. I like his overall look and I love the fact that he will not back down from a threat. He is intimidating enough to put the fear of God in someone but still has good judgement. I'm not really worried that he is going to tear someone a new a hole, but I know he will in fact stop a threat.

I'm very interested to see how Rumor will turn out. For the most part I'm happy with what I see. It's tough to see right now because she is growing in such weird spurts. I have done my research on ancestors and like what I see for the most part. I will say they like them beefy over there and most are a bit over weight for my taste.

No worries, I have very few pics of Drake with a closed mouth.....it just doesn't happen very often. I finally gave up and posted pics any way, tongue hangin' and all, even some slober in one of them, what can I say? That's Drake!

You live somewhere warma and do a lot of activities. Lol i think its expected.

I totally agree!

Personally, I admire beefy dogs. At the same time I certainly want a Doberman to retain the Doberman look which is streamlined, athletic and chiseled. I know the standard says no excess of muscle or bone and I like that; but I don't mind if my Dobe has some bulging muscles to a certain extent.

Sometimes after seeing some Dobes that are too swan-necked I need to look at this for a bit:

I'm very interested to see how Rumor will turn out. For the most part I'm happy with what I see. It's tough to see right now because she is growing in such weird spurts.

I'm guessing she's going to be very similar to Demelza body wise, even though their heads might be a little different. She was only 10 months here but I'm sure you can see similarities.


I have always thought that Ares and Albert have a very similar look.
