Bullmastiffs

, run beside the bicycle and go on challenging hikes
I can't see my little friend next door doing that with you. Especially in this heat. I just don't picture him as this companion that likes to spring alongside a bike! He would take you on those pulling, power walks though !

Senza Tempo changed a lot over the last two years. I don’t like some of her dogs that she got from other breeders. But Cashmere and Preacher are just gorgeous to me. Im very upset Cashmere had to be spayed and rehomed. I wanted a puppy out of them two.

They are definitely more stubborn than our dobermans. But I am actually impressed with how she can call her dogs back to her without any formal training.

Speaking of boxers- I have a guy in the neighborhood I call “The Boxer Guy.” He takes his female for a walk around the neighborhood every morning. He lets her poop and pee on everyones lawns. He picks up the poop but must not think about all the patches of dead grass his dog makes. I can’t stand him. And I don’t understand how his dog is so fat if I always see them walking.

End rant. Haha

My SO and I have been talking about putting a down payment for a puppy due next year. By that time Jasper will be 2.5yrs old. Im not sure if I want two dobermans at a time. I love Jasper, but I know how much work he is. However, the idea of having a red female and a black male seems awesome at the same time. Yet I want to try other breeds. I was set on a cane corso or other Mastiff type dog. Its such a hard decision.

Plus, with all this covid crap right now I'm not sure if the puppy social classes I went to are open. They really helped Jasper get out of his shell as a pup. Who knows how long this will last.

I think you'd love it and there's nothing like the interaction between 2 Dobermans together. While it might seem like a lot more work, to me it was way easier since they keep each other occupied during down time and it makes it so much easier for training one on one. They both want to out do each other when it comes to training so they're trying really hard.

Not to mention they've put a smile on our face every single day watching "a day in the life" of two Dobermans. You might see similar with another breed but it's just not the same.

@JanS I appreciate the input! My gut keeps bringing me back to a doberman. Not to mention my SO wants another doberman. Just have to decide if we want our patio door replaced or another dog XD haha! Im going to have to do better this go around picking a breeder though!

Okay, I want to preface this with a disclaimer/reassurance. I am not trying to upset any Doberman lovers. I believe I said it near the beginning of this thread: For years I said I would have a Doberman for the rest of my life. They were/are my breed – the ultimate and best breed for me. I've also stated that my research into other breeds has always led me back to the Dobe.

That out of the way, I want to point out something that surprises me quite a lot. It's the speed and quickness of the Cane Coros in the following videos from one particular breeder. Now, these (in my estimation) are Corsos that show the Boxer influence, BUT they are not as Boxery as the pics I shared just above. These here actually tend to have proportionately nice large substantial heads and the accompanying generous, but not excessive, amount of jowl and wrinkles that give that impressive, strong Mastiff look.

Here is where they most dramatically show the Boxer influence visually: Their slender legs (especially front legs) and relatively small paws. The more "rustic" type I've seen have big thick front legs and large, flat paws. I actually prefer the thick, impressive bone, and I could tolerate the flat, splayed out paws because – well, it's a Mastiff! These Boxery types in the following videos, though, with their slender front legs and smallish paws: I don't love the kind of a spindly look that imparts to the legs, but I believe it must help account for the amazing speed and quickness of what the breeder mentioned in one video is a 140 lb. dog in the case of the mature black male named Preacher. The almost mature brindle male named Batista you may see in another video looks the same size.

In this video, you see 140 lb. Preacher who has been at a party in the month of June in Texas, and has already been swimming and playing for a considerable amount of time, do some fairly laid back retrieving out of a swimming pool, but just after the 16:00 minute mark, I want you to see how this dog who is literally twice the bodyweight of Oji moves out! Also, note his prey drive, (which I'm trying to move away from.)

Big and very agile. They are gorgeous. Preacher though  I have said it before.. but he is exactly what I would want. I love his head and his confrontation is appealing. Doesn’t have a high croup like many other corsos. His movement says it all imo. Its too bad she doesn’t have any expected litters out of him this year. They are all with Batista, who I am not a fan of.

@Oh Little Oji Have you looked into the Giant Schnauzer? I know, totally different look. Im going to assume you may not like them. But I saw some photos on google images of some impressive males. Still my SO says I’m crazy that I keep researching breeds. Says just get another doberman. But me being me- there are so many dog breeds I would love to own at one point. Im also just indecisive.

I have looked into the Giant Schnauzer. There are some breeders in Ohio. One day I was riding along a neighborhood street with my baby on me and I saw a woman walking a GS. I stopped and asked her about him. Turns out he's from one of the OH breeders (Fanta C?). She had good things to say about him; but I tell ya', he was quite small and ineffectual looking to me.

That is one of the key things that eliminated the GS from my consideration. They seem to be a bit smaller than the Doberman – this, in terms of the breed standard and in terms of what I've seen.

With this breed,I think I'd be getting a dog that is similar in energy level and exercise demands as a Dobe yet has longer hair which I don't like and I'd still have to go through the ear posting process of similar length ears.

This is, however, one of the very few breeds about which my wife reacts positively.

Yeah I guess at that point you may as well just get another doberman lol. For some reason I thought they were bigger. But it has been a while since I researched them. A lot of the images on google make them look pretty big.

For some reason I thought they were bigger.
They are about the same size of a doberman. 25.5 - 27.5 inches for males. Beautiful dogs but yeah you have to strip their coat. We briefly fostered one years ago for a friend of my Dad's . He is retired now but he was highly trained for a spec ops corrections team. There are YT vids of him, just search Max Giant Schnauzer spec ops. Very aloof dog to strangers.

^^^^ that's a beautiful Giant Schnauzer! I never was interested in them but I always think they're quite pretty! They seem to have that square, sturdy, alert look that I like. :)

But I know nothing about stripping the hair. :wideyed: I'm so used to 'no care' hair. Even with my own!

I think they are beautiful too! Reminds me of a dobermans body, but with a beard lol

Some of you may remember I've talked about an old friend from the past who got his first GSD the same time I got my first Dobe. We had these two male dogs in our apartment together

I've been out of touch with this guy for many years, but recently got back in touch via the modern wonder that is texting. We've talked mostly about dogs. He is on his third GSD now. Apparently he ordered a GSD tshirt for himself and ordered this for me.

@Oh Little Oji Have you ever thought about the Canis Panther breed?
Very loyal, high drive, very protective and no slobber like mastiffs.
It’s a blend of Doberman, American Staffordshire, Labrador and Great Dane.

You know, I have seen little pics and links re that breed, but I figured it's too obscure. The name, what's more, made me think of it as an unreliable unscrupulously bred dog.

But I will look into it!

My wife is already leery of the Cane Corso, so a breed with the name "Panther" in it, I'm sure will elicit an immediate "No!"

The breeder was a gentleman that started breeding these in the early 70’s.
Just like with a Doberman it needs lots of socializing as a puppy. It’s very loving to family as well as fiercely protective of them. Height is 27” - 30”.
It has a broad muscles chest and strong neck.
No health issues genetic to the breed have been reported.

I saw a video on these Canis Panther dogs. It was on the Dogumentary TV channel on youtube. Just don’t get one from the breeder on that episode. Watch it for yourself and decide though.

I never researched the breed further after that video left a poor taste in my mouth. But I'm sure someone out there is using better dogs for their program.

I found Rock Of Ages Kennels located in IL, I think. Seems like an older, experienced trainer guy. They also breed GSDs. I have just started to look into this breed. I don't get a great feeling about Rock 'o Ages thus far though.

I like that height range, and the idea of broad chest and strong neck. I will say though that their head and physiognomy doesn't impress me much from what I've seen. Some of these dogs just look like Dobermans with poor conformation. Hmmm.

The fact that you speak of this breed as a good possible option though, Bri, has me definitely planning on looking into it.
