In that case you must make the effort to come to the IDC one year..
Apart from the photos of my dogs the others I post are usually from IDC championships..
IDC is like the mecca of the dobermann world...every dobermann lover should be there at least once in a lifetime..:)

I actually have the opportunity to go this year with a likeminded friend, unfortunately there is still one major hurdle i need to figure out before i can commit.

Can I just pout and be jealous!!!!!

No need to be jealous, you are welcome to come along :)

This is a great thread!
Learning a lot and enjoying the pics past and present.
Thanks all!!

Reason the thread is informative & enjoyable is because participants are civilized people. (with knowledge of the breed)
Just over a week ago same topic (Euro VS American) came up on anther Doberman forum..
You should have seen the insults thrown at European dogs by some of the members!!
I put up with it for couple of pages but it came to a point i couldn't hold back no more..
The thread got locked in no time!!
Some people are so ignorant & narrow minded you jus cannot discuss anything with them!!

My Invitation to go with a friend who already knows many of the people i would love to meet and of course see in person the dobermans of the future and some old legends.. Man it would be tough for me to turn down that dream opportunity for myself especially when i have a guide to make sure i don't get lost or in some type of trouble makes it even more irresistible. (My guide is shopping imports id just be on a dream vacation.)

If i decide to make the trip my accommodations are concrete.. Air Fare on the other hand will get more and more expensive as the days tick on.. I do need to deal with that sooner then later unless i want to spend my entire budget on the flight alone.

Flying plans should be made taking into account the long distance of the show venue from Bucharest Airport..
It is not wise to fly into Bucharest then drive for 8-10 hours on poor Romanian roads..
Best route is to fly to Budapest Hungary then drive for about 3-4hrs (most of it on Hungarian highway) to north of Romania where the show will be held.

If you are serious contact me by PM for more advice..

I have to crash out now.. It's past 1am here and I must be up early tomorrow..I'll reply in the morning

Ice - I so agree that you can discuss it without being ugly. I just happen to see beauty in ALL well bred Dobermans striving for standard. There are things I like better here and things I like better there as I am sure you have things you prefer over some of the dogs even over there. The more we discuss it the more we can LEARN from each other and share our love and passion for this most magnificent animal. I always enjoy visiting with you because you actually KNOW something and are doing it not just talking about it. You share your first hand knowledge which we all love to hear.

Von if you go you better send me tons of pictures!!!!

I don't agree. I had NA and Euro Dobermans. They are so similar!

Some of common behaviour... YOU MAY ADD.
- Be a velcro dog...always want to be in the same room at your side
- Bark when a doorball rings
- Prance around like a horse when we come home
- Wiggle their butt when see us-always
- Play tug of war-always
- Stretch every time they get up from a long nap-yup
- Hangout on the stairs
- Counter surf by using their long nose
- Sit next to you while you eat dinner
- Do anything for a treat
- Kill their stuffed toys
- Smack you in the face with their paw
- Be really well behaved in the car-it means walks
- Eat sticks like it is their dinner
- Watch you from a window when you leave the house....
...to be continued
my dogs does all of those things. wow lol.

Both of our girls are American-Euro (mothers=american, fathers=euro) both are large girls one is 100 lbs.(6yr.) the other 110 lbs.(3yr.) not fat or flabby just health....Loving,super intelligent, high energy, always eager to work or play, very protective, always want to be where we are and listen better than either of our children ever have. I love the "BREED" :dobe: personal Preferences are just that "Preferences"
"I" think....just my opinion :2cents that the two preferences combined makes one BEAUTIFUL Doberman! Both of our girls have papers...we don't show or anything like that...they have full time jobs...Just being our "Babies" We had an intact male standard poodle for 14 yrs.(lost him last year) because of the @##hole teens in our area he was more aggressive than the Dobes and when it came to intelligence.....It would be so HARD for me to choose(Doberman OR Standard Poodle)the only thing I saw different between him and our dobes.....our dobes are more determined...cunning . Now... I THOUGHT dobermans could be destructive......then my husband got a Husky-Shepherd mix, she will be a year old next month but it feels like we have had her for YEARSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! she has EATEN-CHEWED plants, trees, patio furniture, water hoses, rugs, garden tools, ripped the jackets right off our other dogs,MY CAR,Chewed the transmission wiring harness off of our TRUCK,She Eats any and ever thing that she can find :pullhair:.

Well I had to laugh at that one. My daughter used to tell me I loved the dogs more and I used to tell her YES but they behave better!!!

When our kids were young ,If either one was in trouble I would say to my husband " Told you we should stick to DOGS" the older the kids got I found myself saying it more and more by the time they were teenagers I really kinda of meant it ;).LOL Dogs ...no matter how bad they are....they are easier than kids any day!!!:D

When I was 18 and wanted a Doberman, it was because I thought they looked cool and would be fun to own and I'd watched movies like The Doberman Gang and a few others. I still have them somewhere but don't have a VCR to play them anymore lol. It was mainly the whole guarding aspect of the breed and how loyal they seemed it really interested me. Let me say it again, I was 18....when I got Holly, it didn't take long to realize she wasn't what I expected temperament wise, she was a total baby, a total sweetheart and I liked that to a degree but there was no tough, protective side to her at all. To this day I feel bad for being so naive then, for not knowing , not caring , I Just wanted a doberman. It's why I haven't owned one since or any dog because I'm wanting to do it better next time. I like American and European dobermans for different reasons, it just depends on what you like and what your best suited for based on your lifestyle. Both have flaws, some call the Europeans fat, etc. Americans too skinny, tiny boned. Of course you can find American lined Dobes that compete in Schutzhund and pass the Working Aptitude Test, it's just always seemed to me ( and I could be wrong ) that as a whole, the temperament of the euro is more correct to the breed standard. At the end of the day, we're talking about a working dog, the only breed specifically bred to protect. I'm not putting down show Dobermans, they're stunning but when I see them in dog shows I always think man I can't picture this dog protecting anything lol. I get it, no dog is perfect, they all have different personalities like people. I know a lot of breeders these days are breeding American to euro to better the breed I don't know if that's a good idea or not.

There are way too many admirers of euro dobermann in the States

I also think that American's have made the dogs soft to a point- they don't let them be dogs. JMHO

You have hit the nail on the head...Americans love to have a Labrador in a Doberman suit...
If the dog is too active or barking at the neighbors dog...neuter him..that will calm him down..
no disrespect to anyone but, majority of the people i come across on these forums cannot handle a Euro dobe

I went back and pulled this thread up based on the discussion on the future of the Doberman and several comments about how no one any longer wanted THAT dog. A couple things hit me late late night as I considered the discussion.

First is the Euro craze - way too many admirers of the euro in the states without the knowledge or desire to train and socialize them. Yet I get far more inquiries looking for the Euro temperament than an American show dog. I always ask them why the want Euro especially if it is their first doberman, what level of training experience do they have and what are their goals for the dog. So I am not sure it is accurate to claim that no one wants a working temperament. Most people who want a dog for protection think the Euro is it and for the most part sadly they are right.

The Euro craze is way too big to say no one any longer wants a doberman with true doberman temperament.

I so agree with Ice's statement that Americans love to have a labrador in a doberman suit - I think we misunderstand that just because a dog is social does not mean in any way he has correct temperament. Helio is one of the most social dogs I have ever worked with. He is very clear headed and shows outstanding judgement. Yet in the beginning I had strong suspicions that he might not be cut out for working right up to the time our trainer raised the whip to him and I got goose bumps as he changed right before my eyes. Train, test and trial. That is how you know and way too many of the Euro breeders have done none of the above and they place puppies with anyone who buys into they are better because they are bigger so they breed oversized to make money and myth that Euros are healthier. Then way too many of those buyers get into trouble because the breeder certainly could not help them with training issues and they find they are in way over their head.

This Euro craze does seem to have leveled out some thank goodness but what people want in a Doberman remains up for discussion. I feel the real doberman still thrills the heart of those who stand on the end of the leash and work that dog.

I disagree with the opening paragraph of this article because the Doberman was intended to be used for personal protection. Therefore, currently, the Euro bred Dogs for the most part STILL have this natural ability while the US dogs..... not so much. The Euro " type " is better imo because it's closer to what the Doberman was meant to be than what you see here in the States. Here in the states Dobes have been completely watered down, they're total pansies that have the Temperament of Labs and Golden Retrievers. Dobermans prancing around the show ring with the Temperament of a baby Poodle is incorrect on every level. These are working dogs, for work....... these are supposed to be hard nosed , aloof, a little hard to deal with dogs and these days it's just a fad for people. Nothing more then an Accessory
