When I was 18 and wanted a Doberman, it was because I thought they looked cool and would be fun to own and I'd watched movies like The Doberman Gang and a few others. I still have them somewhere but don't have a VCR to play them anymore lol. It was mainly the whole guarding aspect of the breed and how loyal they seemed it really interested me. Let me say it again, I was 18....when I got Holly, it didn't take long to realize she wasn't what I expected temperament wise, she was a total baby, a total sweetheart and I liked that to a degree but there was no tough, protective side to her at all. To this day I feel bad for being so naive then, for not knowing , not caring , I Just wanted a doberman. It's why I haven't owned one since or any dog because I'm wanting to do it better next time. I like American and European dobermans for different reasons, it just depends on what you like and what your best suited for based on your lifestyle. Both have flaws, some call the Europeans fat, etc. Americans too skinny, tiny boned. Of course you can find American lined Dobes that compete in Schutzhund and pass the Working Aptitude Test, it's just always seemed to me ( and I could be wrong ) that as a whole, the temperament of the euro is more correct to the breed standard. At the end of the day, we're talking about a working dog, the only breed specifically bred to protect. I'm not putting down show Dobermans, they're stunning but when I see them in dog shows I always think man I can't picture this dog protecting anything lol. I get it, no dog is perfect, they all have different personalities like people. I know a lot of breeders these days are breeding American to euro to better the breed I don't know if that's a good idea or not.
