What a great opportunity and Katyusha performed like an experienced champ.
Good for you!! Damn, it feels good when it all seems to work. Gotta be proud.
8 of 10 required for THDN checked off the box today. One resident was especially enthusiastic about meeting Katyusha. She was petting Katyusha and told me "I've had 10 Dobermans in my life. You can't go wrong with them unless you just train them wrong." Hearing her experience, I knew both she and Katy were in their element together. They were both high value for each other. It was so touching to see. Another resident really connected with Katy, she said she always had Chesapeakes. So she was happy to connect with a larger therapy dog too. They had more than their share of time together. It is sad to see how many residents miss the opportunity to have a big dog beside them, but it's also nice to know we can go help them not miss it, even if for just 10 smiling minutes.

The facility posted pics from yesterday on Facebook. I don't like taking pictures while we are in the room to engage other people but I don't mind sharing what the facility staff took and shared. Just if anyone wants to see.
I really hope it does too, for the same reasons you do. There are people out there who are willing to do it. There aren't lots and lots, though. I do wish we would reach out a bit to younger folks and try to get them into doing the therapy visits with their dogs. I guess I can do that work to reach out. If you ever hear anyone talk about it, let me know, I can get them information (at least here in the US, although Alliance of therapy dogs may be international as well, I would have to check)
I love this about her too, when we play the games and I introduce her, her ears are always up, but when it comes time to greet anyone, it's always the airplane ears. I like the way you worded that too!

Some freinds of mine gave it to me for new year's. Their selection was just priceless!
Took 3 days off, so today, I drove the 7 blocks or so down to my home town nursing home. Introduced myself to the activities director and said I have a therapy dog, and wow did her face ever light up! So we are going there Friday the 19th for "happy hour/social hour". She said it is well-attended and a great type of gathering for a dog to mingle at. So far it is only Katyusha and I but the rest of the group has been invited, I don't know if we will be on our own yet or if others will come. But now we know each other exists and can work together to get something going.
We had a wonderful visit at our local nursing facility today for the happy hour/social hour. Local in this case means just walking distance from me. up until now, we have joined the schedule of organizers in bigger cities and went to join them, 35 or 45 minutes drive, either of those cities. So today, Katy and I went, and kind of last minute, one other team joined us for it, which was nice and felt supportive
. The other dog was an absolutely beautiful GSD and her handler. We all spent about 30 minutes in a common area, then went to individual resident's rooms by invitation, for those who were not as easily mobile to get to the common area. Just two dogs, but it was about right for the number of people served.
The noteworthy part of the visit:
On our way out, the activities director stopped us to let us know that the one resident in the commons area had refused for months to come out of her room, until she was told there would be dogs to pet and visit. "Now we know what gets her out of her room..." That resident did enjoy both dogs a lot and shared about the Weiner Dog she had for 16 years named "Peanut", and how she missed him so.
Katy and I and the GSD owner with her dog Anja agreed to go on the activities calendar for each first Friday of the month, so everything is predictable and plannable for the residents and staff. We go back again the 3rd of May. The activities director also agreed to some off the books visits for the new Z-pup, who comes home this Wednesday if all the cropping appointments go as planned, so that she can get socialized in a relatively safe environment too, parvo-wise, and just meet new people.
9 of 10 therapy visits for Katyusha to be titled as THDN on the books. But the more important part is that we got a resident out in the commons for the first time in months. Many people and 2 fantastic dogs all had a great day today helping each other out.

That is great news and very heart warming. I know our patients are very animal loving and it’s often stated they want to get home to their animals.
They don’t allow animals in our hospital but we do incite the idea of family members bring them to the patients windows. It absolutely brightens and gives them hope.
Great job in having a wonderful affect on folks that have no brightness in their lives. It/you do make that difference.

Keep up the great work!
we do provide great moments and we are not blind to this, but what I really love about therapy dog work is that we are provided those same great moments, too. Everyone grows and benefits when we do this, including Katy and Myself!
