Dog Related Plans & Goals for 2025

That’s too bad @MichiH. I hope you guys are able to go again soon! I was going to take Remy on Friday since there was availability for “day-of” runs, but I think I have too much to do before I leave for vacation on Monday lol. Maybe you can see if the club offers “day-ofs” and you could go another day, assuming the snow is gone?

@Katyusharocket I hope you and Z have a lot of fun at the class! Most dogs seem to love it!
Have fun on vacation!!!

Well, I got chewed out because I asked if I could use a prong and then put her flat collar on when she ran. I have no idea I’ve never done AKC events.

It is calling for snow still such a bummer!

Unfortunately AKC events do not allow them to be worn on their show/sport grounds. You’ll notice that a lot of people do use them though. I’m not sure about FastCat but just about every Doberman I’ve seen comes into the show with one on lol. As far as I know, just barn hunt and dock diving allow them. It would be awesome if you could use a prong on FastCat until it was time for your dog’s run. Remy is so crazy over it, you’d think he’s never been walked on a leash while I’m there 😂.

I can’t imagine her being around a bunch of dogs without one on. She will be very spastic and alert. I simply asked and the lady was nasty.
I figured it was a state park and I’d remove it when she ran, worth me asking.
Lol well I apparently not.

Good to know those events allow them!

She shouldn't have been. I had a long talk with a judge at one of our UKC shows and she said it's perfectly fine to use them on the grounds, just not in the ring. AKC might be different though. I know I had a Secret Powers prong on Elroy at an AKC show last fall and no one said a word.

That’s what I thought too. The information she sent said no prongs or e collars and I wanted clarification.
What’s the issue with prongs?
Second time this lady was rude and definitely a turn off.

Somewhere people got the notion that they're cruel but choke collars are safe, when in reality it's just the other way around.
Some of the AKC people can be downright rude and I don't think they realize the impact it can have on future shows when they can't even answer a question civilly.

people are something else 😵‍💫

We are currently in the process of earning our CGC right now. He will have his test on March 1st. The trainer I work with is a balanced trainer and will allow us to start with prongs and treat rewards then gradually wean off before the test, since the test does not allow prongs.

Agree. Why I like dogs and horses better. That said, no excuse for that person to be rude. Just answer your question. "No, I'm sorry, prong collars are not allowed on any AKC venue Showgrounds".

I was told (and it makes sense) that it is not AKC that is behind this ban but their fear of PITA movement who sometimes are on the grounds as spectators but taking pictures to publish against people "abusing dogs" at dog shows or events. People putting on the events want nothing to do with being published in a bad light and so strongly agree with AKC in enforcing the rules.

I have used a covered prong very discretely to potty my dog or something out in parking areas, but it's impossible to lead to the start line of a fast cat because you'd have to remove it in front of a line of people/dogs. Search "Dog Snood" for some very pretty options to further cover your covered prong collar. Disclaimer: I'm not encouraging you to break any rules. 😜

I have an iffy schedule this year but will continue to work on my AKC Scentwork Excellent title (we have 3 out of 4 elements) and even if I don't trial in obedience, I'll still continue to work on our CDX exercises at home because Asha loves to train. And yes, hiking is the best here and a couple of miles a few times a week always makes life better.
AKC pending, but this weekend we finished our entire Excellent title (takes a total of 12 Qs, 3 Qs in each of 4 elements) and also got a couple of Qs in Master level. I'm beyond proud of my dog!

Katyusha did her visit 49 last week and we have one scheduled for tomorrow at a school, so she will be able to drop the "Novice" part of her therapy dog THDN title. She could have made 50 last night but the residents kept asking about "my other one" and how she is doing, so I got permission from the administrator, and took Zastava last night instead. She did better than I expected but was still pretty obsessed with getting her guardian self out the door to inspect the hallway, LOL. The residents did appreciate her, though. I think she might have it in her, with some maturity. She is at least friendly, so nothing to worry about that way, she is just not very interested in sitting to be pet. I think it's boredom. Time will tell.

Zastava's nosework is going great! She wants that hide, no matter that I am holding cheddar cheese in my hand, and goes looking for it with excitement! Katyusha is more so focused on the cheese in my hand. Toby, well, I just put the cheese on the hide for him and let him root the both of them out together. I think with his lack of vision, he has trouble catching on that I would like him to find the hide first. But it's still lots of fun for him.

Absolutely no moves on my behalf to get in shape for a FIT dog run yet

So yesterday was Riley's 6 month birthday. I took him down to weigh him at the Vet. I ran into a lady that was a RR breeder. She fell in for the brat and wants us to come check out her club. She's encouraging us to get involved in lure coursing. Turns out this lady lives on a farm down the road from me. We are going there tomorrow to see how Riley does.
I think I have made it pretty clear how I feel about dog clubs so this is still a big if for us but from what she says it may be a possibility.

Your goals & plans can be ANYTHING! Is your goal to walk/run/hike more with your dog? Awesome! Is your goal to improve loose leash walking? Great! Looking to finish up legs towards a title? Super! This isn’t intended to be viewed as a competitive thing amongst each other, rather a way to share our plans, motivate each other, etc…

My goals are mostly related to dog sports. Although I really enjoy training I can sometimes procrastinate, so setting goals like going to a trial motivates me to stay consistent!

My 2025 plans & goals:
•My original goal for this year was to finish Remy’s AKC championship. We haven’t had much luck showing (granted I’m sure we don’t do the best job), so at this point I would be happy to just get him pointed this year! We’re entered in a show in a few weeks and I also plan to enter my local club’s show in April. After that we’ll likely take the rest of the spring and summer off, but of course it all depends on how things go.

•I would love to try agility classes with him! I got the contact info awhile back but the instructor hasn’t been very responsive and doesn’t post her class schedules anywhere, so who knows if/when we’ll make it to class lol.

•I’d love to get more involved with barn hunt! Unfortunately the nearest places to train are 2.5-3 hours away, so I’m not able to go there as much as I’d like. So far he’s only done 1 lesson and 1 trial, earning his RATI title. He didn’t want to tunnel during his lesson so that’s something we’ll need to work on.

•I’m hoping to start trialing in the Advanced level of AKC scent work this spring. I have my eyes set on a trial in April!

•I have a hiking trip planned next month for my birthday (Remy is coming of course). I’m also hoping to bring him to another park I love this spring/summer! I really wanted to go last year but was just too busy with other things.

•Lastly, I’m hoping he earns his CGCA this year, possibly CGCU also but we’ll see lol.
2025 Goals! I am looking to sell 256 acre 2nd property. Use funds in part to fence in a 1 acre property and start the search for breeder and SD Organization to aid in Sir Teaufulhaundt of (final part of name in ponder). To wake up to a wet nose once again! To see those crossed paws!

Firstly, Happy Birthday Riley! I wonder if you could explain lure coursing. You mentioned how to feel about dog clubs; Without putting you on spot, what concerns are regarding dog clubs? I haven't thought of dog clubs for past Teauful, mainly I don't want dobermans with unbrushed teeth and hairy paws associated with my hygienic Dobe.lol

Lure coursing is a dog sport where the dog chases the lure that is hooked on a pulley. It's great physical and mental exercise.
This link can probably explain it better than me Lure Coursing 101: Get To Know the Action-Packed Dog Sport

I think we'll take up more scent training this year as our girl really excels at that and we enjoy being outdoors so it would be a win for us both. I would love for her to be able to find missing people, in particular. Every month, 1-2 elderly people are in the local news for being lost due to dementia. I would like to be able to help with that.

Nose work is up and coming...dobes are good at it.

We went out to Purina Farms this weekend for the AKC National Rally and Obedience Championship. What a humbling experience! I learned Riley and I need to step up game BIG TIME!
One of our members "granddog" placed 10th and she's only 18 months old! That is an amazing accomplishment! Not just anyone can enter this event, you have to be invited after meeting certain criteria. Here's a link that explains the event AKC National Obedience Championship – American Kennel Club
