2024 Goals for Asha

If you have any space at all in your yard or garage or driveway, you can do these things. A ring is only like 40' x 50', so not very large. And don't you have a part in that dog park? Can you go before or after hours, especially with longer daylight coming on
We could in the before or after hours at the dog park, potentially.. thats more up to me adjusting our schedule than me asking her to ....

If I were let her out in the buck in our city lot, it might not end well, what with the squirrels or feral cats and all. So she needs to be on a cable at home. But not necessarily in the dog park if I can get her there early or late enough.

Oh my goodness, how lucky are you!!!
Right? I was looking at this stuff on J & J supplies - close to $400 not counting shipping (oversize plus the weight, no telling what that would be!) so I thought worth a long shot & emailed the club members asking if anyone had any used jumps that they wanted to sell, and the club president said I could borrow hers for as long as I needed them. 🥰 She's big into Rally and everyone in the club seems to like that better than obedience and the few that do want to try some obedience are just doing virtual BN with no plans to do more. So jumps have just been in the bag in her garage for years. Even if I never do Open, Asha has fun and I'm learning to do something new. I work on heeling before and during the fun stuff so now that's less boring to her.

Practiced heeling and fun stuff at the college field the other day. Here's the stand for exam - yes, I had to be the "judge" to touch her, and yes, I jostled her a bit to proof standing stock still - and also for fun working on hand signals. Hand signals are not part of the CD, which is on my 2024 goal list, but it's fun for both of us to train new stuff.

I enjoy watching your videos with Asha. She listens so well and quickly.

I'm so glad you enjoy watching... I don't post for any reason except to encourage other people to train. Hoping to set an example for fun and bonding if not any other reason, they LOVE to train! That said, in her younger years she did not listen so well, we had plenty of challenges and still do.

I hope Pepper will be that responsive in her future. So yes, you give me hope seeing these videos ❤️ She for sure is lacking in listening recently, but still doing well for the most part. I know it’s part of the journey. Agree, they love to train! I do enjoy training with her and seeing how eager she is to please.

Still working on obedience - trial coming up in May! Went to my friends behavior class yesterday to put Asha in a group. What I love about this trainer is that she offers Thursday pack walks and Sunday group training at no charge to clients who have used her services. Some of these dogs are new, some have been showing up for years. Yesterday an Akita showed up (first time in group) but was too reactive to get close. She had him stay at a distance and at the end of the hour he was about 20 feet outside the group and learning to chill. Anyway, Asha did great and I really appreciate the opportunity do expose her to groups of dog and knowing they are all under control. The dog next to Asha was muzzled but it behaved perfectly.

The world needs more people like this, who offer a little more because of their passion for what they are doing.

This is awesome! I love seeing her just chill laying there looking at you.

Back to the Sunday class yesterday. I get there early to do some training on my own because it's not centered around AKC obedience. Michelle got there early with her 3 shepherds and left them on a down outside while she went in to use the restroom. These dogs can be left like this without someone there to watch, but since I was there I took a couple of pictures. A guy went by to go in the building and was watching them carefully, but they didn't move. And neither did Asha, but I was there to make sure she didn't. 😅

There were 12 dogs at the training, we did long sits & downs at the end of leash, had two rows of dogs facing each other and heeled down the row between them, normal, slow & fast. A couple of the dog-aggressive dogs got growly-barky but were handled appropriately and Asha totally ignored them. She has become really good at being dog neutral.. A very good training day.

I LOVE it!! Ripley as you've seen on my facebook comments has started to become really good at this too! She can also be dog reactive, especially when she's alone. But with me she'd hackle up, tense up, puff her lips, grumble a lot, and the worse was be distracted. Now she's been doing less and less and totally ignoring while staying engaged with me or the task! Yay for our girls!! :purps:

She looks great....I love your videos, and have been encouraged by you to post my training Falcon. I LOVE her scooch over....I think @Rits gave it the appropriate name of passby? So great. I never had a dog do that so clean!

Yay Asha and @Ravenbird! What a great day and training. You two inspire me! 🖤🤎

and have been encouraged by you to post my training Falcon.

I love that it encourages others to train and post progress. Those who watched my struggles with this dog her first year or two, they know how far we've come. I think it's great to encourage each other on this forum no matter if we have goals to compete or not, showing our progress lets others know that it DOES take work and commitment and that work and commitment always brings progress. The bond we make by training our dogs is unbreakable! ❤️

Yesterday the AKC club had 3 dogs doing CGC & CGCA, and yours truly was the neutral dog used in their tests! Only you guys who watched me struggle with Asha for years for exploding in public know how much this means to me! I did have her prong collar on since she was not being judged. No photos, we were short on help as it was.

To break up the monotony of obedience practice I've been working on retrieves, on the flat and over a jump. Video is kinda long - 3 min. - but you will see it's not all pretty. She hit the jump the 2nd time - I think she got too close after picking up the dumbbell so had a short take-off? I started to edit it down to just the two good jumps, but thought, no, this is what happens in training, tell it like it is! Also, earlier in the session she was getting too wild for the ball reward so I put the ball under the cone and used the tug instead. It's amusing to watch her keep checking the cone for her ball. 😅
