My Doberman is very flakey

Does anyone have any suggestions for dander control? My dobie tends to get very flakey after I bathe her. I am currently using the shampoo I have attached and I am very gentle when bathing her. I use my finder tips in a downward motion from her neck to her bottom. I’ve noticed ever since I started to bathe her like this she doesn’t shed much in the shower. I feed her Purena pro plan for sensitive skin and stomach. And I also give her omega oil in her food. Occasionally I’ll give her sardines as a snack. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated 😇

  • I was wondering about that too!

I'm not a huge fan of anything Purina since it can cause flakey skin. Have you tried a different food to see if it made a difference?

I have fed her Hills science diet when she was a puppy and it gave her diarrhea. Do you have any suggestions?

Does her skin/fur feel dry or oily? Does she get smelly quickly? If so, she could actually have a yeast issue. Chlorhexidine shampoo should help in that case.

If she feels dry, I would use a conditioner after shampooing her. Make sure to let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing. (I would actually use conditioner with the medicated shampoo as well.)

It seems like she is getting plenty of omegas in her diet, so it doesn’t appear to be a nutrition issue in my opinion.

Coat looks shiny, so food is good.
How often are you bathing with shampoo?
Unless there is an infection, once a month is enough, and use cool water. You can rinse off more often, once a week, no soap/shampoo.

If you are seeing the flakes after bathing;
Have you tried a different dog shampoo?

Is the flakiness always there, or does it come on occasion? If your dog is young, chances are it's just a confidence issue. If not, I'd give an extra rinse to make sure all the shampoo is coming off. In between baths, we just use baby wipes when we're out, or a microfiber cloth to get him clean at home.

I have both a blue Dobie and a red Dobie, and feed the PPP Sport. Both have excellent skin and coats, even the blue. Here the rub - I NEVER shampoo, it just strips the oils. Unless there is grime, all I use is a sponge and cool water even before a show. I do have a coat conditioner or sun screen that I might apply when dry.

I use mane and tail shampoo and conditioner once a month and a half or so. I also feed them a can of tuna in olive oil once a week to supplement their kibble. We are always touching them and petting them, so they get the natural oil from our hands. They are shiny as a piece of patent leather. Dandruff comes and goes with the humidity and cold, where I live, the winter is the driest, hence sometimes some dandruff. Good looking coat on your dog.
