Injured ears, feeling like a failure

She is now 5 months old and has a medium crop, I also followed the adivce of a member on her and give her Ester-C daily to help support the cartilage.

From your expierence, would it be realistic that her ears will be done when shes 6 months old?
Thanks for the update on the ears, glad it's going well.

No matter how good they look at 5 months, post through her 6th month to be sure all the teeth are in. Adult teeth grow really fast and use the body's calcium supply which is also what is used to set the ear cartilage. Many people want to quit posting just at the time the teeth are having a growth spurt. Don't be tempted, you've worked too hard at this! Others have more experience than I do, but I think they'll agree on this. Having a medium crop should allow you to have longer breathing time out of posts, but the main thing is sleeping on a bent ear for an hour can cause a crease that will force you to post even longer. You're almost there, don't be too tempted to stop!

You know…the golden rule is 6months- after teething has finished. Do folks stop posting earlier- yes.

Ehh…can you? Sure you can. Should you gamble all the time and energy you have put in? I don’t know… All it takes is for him to sleep on a bent ear and damage cartilage that is still forming/hardening. Then you have caused him to have a droopy ear for the rest of his life.

I really don’t think that’s fair to the Doberman- it’s the owner’s job, the owner’s responsibility to do the right thing. That’s why I posted through 7.5months making damn sure teething was over.

Sorry about the rant- not directed at you but that’s a touchy subject with me. I get very angry at the folks that don’t do the work and the job of doing it right and the Doberman suffers in the end. Just not right.

You could try the mole foam method. (It’s on YouTube.com .) That’s what we are doing. No tape at all! Our girl’s ears look great and she’s 20 weeks! She seems to pull them out after about 4 days. Keep a watch on them when they come out, as she likes to try to eat them even with apple bitters spray on them.

You are essentially using human skin glue to glue the Dr. Scholl’s mole foam - not moleskin into the inner ear. I figured if it’s safe for human’s skin, it’s safe for dog’s skin.

thank you for the suggestion, luckily my pups ears have healed well and i can use baker rods and tape without any issues. her ears are also basically done, but i will follow the advice of the other members and keep her posted until she reaches 7 1/2 months, just to be sure.

Hi everyone!

I got a „final update“ on Trosts ears for everyone’s who’s interested 😊

As I said in my previous post, her ears luckily healed quick and without issues. Yesterday I had them both out of the posts and took some pictures. I’m very surprised that even I can’t really tell that one ear is shorter than the other, neither could my parents when they visited. Now that the fur has grown back, it basically completely conceals it the difference!

I feel like the only thing you can tell is that, if you look from the side, that the tips of the ears are a different shape. Since the flame had to be removed on the right, the tip is a bit thicker than on the right, also since I didn’t trim the fur inside the tip of that „cut“ ear yet, the tip looks a bit „bushy“ compared to the other one lol

I’m gonna trim the fur around her ears once she’s fully done posted in about 3-4 weeks and I think if I do it right, it will even be hard to tell from the sides that they’re different!

Thank you all for encouraging me and helping me with your advice.

My puppy blues are also over. Trost is a amazing dog and I’m so happy to have her in my life ❤️
