Injured ears, feeling like a failure

I would get a different tape. We tried that type with our first Doberman and he had the same issues you are experiencing. A porous tape like Zona's or Kendal works the best.

I really can’t tell very well but from the pict it looks as if the top strip of tape is too tight. I am sure you did this correctly because you are going to be super cautious…. but it appears to be binding into the hair- the bottom of the blue circle.

As compared to the bottom tape has some gap in it- middle of red circle.

Thank you for pointing that out, I went back and corrected it.

Unfortunately she is very bothered by the „loose“ posts and scratched the first ones out immediately 😬

I reposted them and taped the base a bit tighter, the tips still super lightly and really made sure to put the posts in deep. Unfortunately she is still super bothered by them, scratching and shaking the entire time. Let’s hope they’ll survive until tomorrow haha

Unfortunately we don’t have either of these around here … So I am not really sure what I could use. We have something called Leukoplast but I don’t know if this is considered porous tape

That looks like better tape to use. I agree I think the top strip is slightly too tight. I personally tape the ears with the ears wrapped around the post, then squeeze.

"Leukoplast is easy to tear and is permeable to both air and water vapour to prevent maceration."

Yeah….that’s kinda why I was glad you got those ears back up in post. If they stay out too long she will get use to her ears being free. It will take a little time for her to get use to the post again. Post the ears and then engage her in play or a little walk- this will distract her and (hopefully) she will get use to them again.

I will never for get taking down the post for 1hour and letting them run and play. All of a sudden Rag would stop and sit because a bird was singing…hard to hear that in the post.

I corrected the tightness of the upper tape, the posts lasted during the night and our morning walk, now she shook out the post of the more injured ear, I am gonna clean it and repost it. The tip is still dry, no bleeding or puss, I am watching it very closely and take pictures to see if the black border spreads and tbh I feel like it did... The worry is driving me insane. i kinda think it could be from the laser, because she has a patch of skin where she had another injury and after using the laser of in this, it turned black as well. Anyway, I made another vet appointment but they only had one of friday. Until then I guess I'll really be able to tell if the border spread. Its just really hard to compare it with a puppy that doesnt like staying still

On second glance I think it’s not necrotic tissue but it was burned from the laser because now I can see dried up blood that i couldn’t see yesterday, I looks more like a scab than necrosis.

The first picture is her ear yesterday, although done with flash it’s looks pretty dark and purple and the scab looks black

This is her ear now, tho I feel like the border has become a bit bigger, you can clearly see it’s dark red and not black so I really hope it’s dried blood/a scab which will fall off and not necrotic tissue. Also, I feel like her ear isn’t as dark purple anymore which I take as a sign that blood is circulating well. But please, let me know what y’all think!

Hey everybody,

This is what Trosts Ear looks like today. 2E4E82EF-BF7B-4A17-A1EF-01022D7E92DC.webp

Not much different from yesterday, to be fair, but I’d have a vet appointment tomorrow. Do y’all think it’s necessary to let the vet look at it again or is this fine?

Ooo weee…
That second picture looks soo much better!
Yay! I am happy for you!
Hi, sorry for directly asking you but since my vet appointment is getting closer and you seem to have quite some knowledge about wounds I’d like to ask you if you feel like it’s necessary that the vet looks at her ear one more time or do you think I can cancel the appointment?

This is her ear now, not much different from yesterday 6FCF44A6-3CF0-40B4-A234-B8137C2C47E7.png

I’d be very thankful for your (or the other people on here) opinion!

Sorry…
Been driving for the last four hours.

If it was me, I would not go back to the vet. There is nothing the vet is going to do more. They will look at it, maybe clean it up, put some Betadine on it and want to see her next week for another checkup.

You pups wound and surrounding tissues look about the same to me. I expect this to continue on until the edges heal, dry and flake off like burnt toast crust. If you want you can go to the store and get some Betadine to dab on there.

That’s what I would do. But some people are hesitant about internet advice and want to talk to a warm body. I want you to do what feels comfortable to you.

But to answer your question, looks good to me. I see no:
new wound edges
new dark coloring
pus or viscous fluid build up
inflammation or swelling

Please keep us updated regardless what you do, it will keep me worrying…

I agree that there isn't much the vet can do that you can't do at home. As long as there's no infection it should be fine.
I'd still try to find a different tape though.

I already ordered the Leukoplast tape, it will arrive tomorrow! Thank you for your advice, I really appreciate it

Thank you so much for the advice! I will definitely give updates and ask for more advice on ear posting in general as time goes on 😊

Hi everybody a little update,

I decided to call my vet first to ask if it’s necessary to come in. He said that it’s totally normal for the part where the laser was used to scab over and that it’s not necrosis. He gave me his phone number and I sent him the pictures of the ear over the past few days. He confirmed that as long as it’s dry and doesn’t smell, which it doesn’t, it’s not necessary to come back in. We decided that to cancel the appointment for today and i will watch it closely over the weekend. If it gets worse (fingers crossed it doesn’t 🥺) I’ll come back in next week, but with how it looks like, at the moment there’s no need to get it checked in person by the vet again.

If there’s something to update on or if I need more advice I would post it here.

Again, Thank you everyone for the good advice and words of courage. Y’all have really helped me a lot!

Hi everyone!

I got good news: Trosts ear is MUCH better, yay!

I did go to the vet to get her ears checked out today, because I thought now her other ear was turning darker day by day, eventhough I left both of her ear tips out of the posts and wrapped them so loosely, that they fell out frequently - but better safe than sorry, right?

To make a long story short: the vet looked at both her ears and said theyre both fine. The ear i thought was getting darker is fine and her other ear (where the flame had to be amputated and had the thick black scab on for some time) is almost fully healed!

I did follow your advice and got the different tape and only used the baker rods and two strips of tape (one at the base and one towards the tip, but leaving them out). Its working great for us, so thank you all again!

But now I got another question regarding ear posting:

I rarley leave her ears unposted for more than cleaning and letting them dry, but today I left them for a good hour and I noticed that they seem to stand pretty sturdy. The base seem fully hardend on both ears and just the tips are floppy when she moves, but they stood straight the entire time. I think she would be almost ready to just use breathe right strips on the tips, but I think I'd rather leave the tips alone for at least 2 more weeks.

My question is: how do I know when I am done posting or when she's ready for breathe right strips? Do I just take out the posts and 'wait' for them to flop and then repost her if needed?

She is now 5 months old and has a medium crop, I also followed the adivce of a member on her and give her Ester-C daily to help support the cartilage.

From your expierence, would it be realistic that her ears will be done when shes 6 months old?
