Ear Posting with Swelling

My 7mo male, Zodiac, and I are still in the process of posting his ears and although they do stand for the majority of the time unposted, one will flop because of a crease or both will if I leave them be for a little bit. My issue right now aside from that is the tips of his ears are swollen with a sore on one of them. I use the backer rod method with athletic tape and change them every 5 days which has worked really well with him until now. I work in vetmed with repro vets but they do not have experience with cropping so it’s a shot in the dark with their advice. Should I change methods? Can I still post his ears and if not, how long should I stop posting them? Any and all suggestions would be amazing.

Welcome from Minnesota!

His ears don't look bad to me, they just need more posting. How wide is the athletic tape you are using and how tight do you tape them?

I think the backer rod method is still your best bet and make sure the tape never gets wet or it will shrink on the ears as it dries.

The athletic tape is 1.5inch in width and I’ve been using 5/8inch backer rods, but I am switching to 3/4in to hopefully get the crease out. And I don’t wrap the tap too tight, but I do squeeze the air out once it’s fully wrapped if that makes sense. I’m probably being overly cautious because there were a lot of complications with my female’s healing and her ears do not stand, and I don’t want to screw up.

But that makes a lot of sense because even though they have never gotten drenched, my female will get the tips in her mouth A LOT when they’re playing together no matter how many times I try to correct her.

Agree on just need to keep posting, also I might change them out every 3 days to keep an eye on the health of them, instead of 5 days. When that tape gets too tight due to moisture it can wreak havoc pretty quickly.

Thank you, thank you! I’ll do that moving forward.

When you take the posts down and clean the ears, it wouldn't hurt to use a bit of Vetericyn

or Vashe on that wound before reposting. Just let it dry first.
