Rue is in the ICU

Several months ago we had to take Rumor to the emergency Vet. It was a nightmare! That was back when you waited in your car and a vet tech came out and took your dog in. The phone consult with the vet seemed like a waste of time. The result was pretty inconclusive (Some rumblings of possibly some sort of toxin) and Rumor was left with tremors.
The tremors had become pretty much random and not near as often. Then today that changed. She had a seizure at about 7 this morning. It wasn't too bad, at first she just staggered then she fell to the ground and was salivating pretty heavy. She lost control of her bowels and seemed REALLY disoriented. .I called the vet and took her in. They did some blood work as well as checked her from top to bottom. She seemed okay and blood values all looked pretty good. It was decided to take her home and keep an eye on her. If she had another episode, bring her back. Well of course she did and it was just after hours so off to the ER we went. The ER Vet feels that perhaps there was some sort of toxin the last time and maybe this time. She was diagnosed with some sort of epilepsy that will remain idiopathic because they can't prove anything. Apparently few toxins remain in the system with the exception of a couple to test for.
Rumor will remain in the ICU while they dial in her dose of anti seize meds.
I hope they get this figured out quick! I just got home and it's waaaay too quite here. I need her busy self back home!

Oh gosh, I am so sorry you and Rumor are going through this! Our female Norwegian Elkhound, Eisa, had seizures and it is so hard to see that happen. You and Rumor are in our prayers. Good thoughts will be sent your way from all of us! I hope the Vet figures this out quickly so Rumor can come home soon! Hang in there!

Oh, gosh, my heart aches for you! Poor Rue! You all will be in my thoughts and prayers! I had a Pomeranian that had seizures so I know how frightening they can be. We'll be anxiously awaiting updates! 🙏🙏

How scary all of that must have been and still is! I have a friend who's 4-5year old Aussie has pretty bad seizures. With meds he lives a mostly normal life. Still dock dives and does some light agility. She lets him decide what he wants to do and they live day by day to the fullest. Prayers for Rue.

I know how frightening they can be.
The first one, while scary, was more like what the hell just happened? The second one however was REALLY scary! Violent convulsions that lasted several minutes along with her losing control of her bowels and bladder. I worry that she will have one and I won't be able to move her to a safe place. She went down by a wine barrel on the patio last night. She kept hitting her head on it as she was thrashing around. It was almost impossible to move a large dog during a violent seizure. Hubs had just gotten home so he was able to help me move her.
With meds he lives a mostly normal life.
The Vet said the odds are good that we will get her meds dialed in and she will live a good life. There may be periods where we have to make adjustments like up the dose, try a different one or even add a second drug to manage her seizures.

I called this morning and Rue had a peaceful night. Looks like she is going to come home on Keppra every 8 hours. I should be able to pick her up about 9 this morning :) I'll be nice to have her home.

I can't imagine how terrifying that would be. Hoping the meds will be the answer. May you both rest easy today. ❤️

She's home :)
Her medication makes her REALLY drowsy so I've been busy blocking areas she needs to stay away from ie: the stairs. The big thing is the pond. Not sure how I'm gonna fix that long term. For now she goes out on a leash. Someone is not happy about that. I'll try to get a pic of her pouty face. :D

Seizures in dogs are no fun. I lost a young dog to them and he was on three types of meds several times a day. Extremely difficult to watch. So sorry you are going through this.

Most dogs respond very well to medication! And remember they don’t feel pain when convulsing, worst part is probably the confusion afterwards. Thankfully we were able to tell when my boy was going to have one, he got this weird look a min or two before so we were able to get him on the ground somewhere safe.

I just read about this in the shout box and how very scary it must be! Prayers are sent that the meds do their job and I bet she's really happy to be back home now.

Keep us posted.

My Rue is feeling better today. I had some deadheading and simple maintenance to do in the yard. She got to go out without a leash! She was very happy about that. While her meds are still affecting her some, it's sooooo much better. She is much more stable on her feet. So the reigning Queen got some time on her throne. It's a very large piece of driftwood that she just loves to lay behind and watch for critters.
The good news is no seizures since she started the meds!

She has very soft, living looking eyes in that first photo.
Actually she is stoned  Her med makes her drowsy. She is supposed to adjust to it and not be so drowsy within 2 weeks or so. She has already started, not near as drowsy as the first day.
