Ripley Show Thread

He actually is enjoying it! Honestly... he is better and knows more than me at this point when it comes to standing next to her and handling her. I look down and all I see is the top of the dog and my uncoordinated self beside her. They go to conformation practice every week and have been since the beginning of the year.

As far as obedience, that's 98% me but he does make her mind in every day life and helps reinforce a learned behavior with play as a reward. But I do all the teaching the new behavior and doing our homework everyday with repetition. Can't complain too much on the teamwork! Ever since we have been together he has seen the value of training and having a well behaved dog through me vs just having a dog exist with no training and everyone having to live around the dogs bad behaviors. I know that's not the same for every household so I'm thankful for that.

I think that sounds like the perfect arrangement/teamwork. You teach the behaviors and do the training and he helps reinforce just by daily routines, etc. I think sometimes that is the hard part to get everyone on board with the training. And to know they are going to do it the right way and not confuse or frustrate the dog!

Right!? Will never let this go down in history and I know we will continue to laugh about it. In the moment I felt like crying LOL.


Thank you, we love her no matter! Structurally, I just love her, and finding that more and more as she matures. But even then, her temperament is so good too. For conformation, she has some flaws as every dog does but when it comes down to it they could be improved in the next generation.

The litter Ripley came from has 4 bitches being shown, it was such a nice litter! Exciting to see where the future takes everyone, including @JanS and Phoebe

It really is the hardest part! Sometimes he does let things slide or isn't quick to react, whether reward or correction then sees the repercussions later and decides it's better to do it "mom's way" haha

Just out of curiosity, did you know you wanted to show Ripley from the start. Did you tell the breeder you wanted a show pup?

Nope. I wanted a performance puppy! I knew I wanted to do obedience and other fun sports like dock diving, barn hunt etc so I told her that and to give me the more naughty one lol. But then she had two black females and when it came down to evaluation time she couldn't decide and had to bring in a lot of friends for a second or third opinion to eval. They told her to keep them both One was definitely going to a show home (not me) and the other to me. My breeder helped us though and encouraged us to go play in UKC as early as 4 months to get her started, have fun and see how we like it. If she turned out, then we could show her in AKC. Well the rest is history now

Does that mean breeding might be in Ripley's future?

We are a long way off from there and it's not the goal but if she's quality enough, passes health testing, and under our breeder's mentorship, maybe. It definitely wouldn't be decided lightly or without guidance and the right steps taken first. Not gonna put the cart before the horse. Enjoying living in the moment with her.

Ripley and Derek attended their first doberman specialty show in Monroe, MI on Friday and placed in both of their classes full of professionals. Tough stuff!! They looked good out there! Ripley's breeder was there and a team full of supporting people. Derek has got it all down, now just learning all the nitty gritty handling skills to really finesse their craft. I can't wait to watch them continue to improve. Everyone has high hopes for them both. Melissa is pleased that Ripley has turned out really well, said that she has a lovely head and a great topline and rear. They see great potential in Derek! So proud of them both





Ripley got to play with her littermate, Saylor, too. Two mirror images Saylor approached Ripley and Ripley was acting like she didn't know her, aloof. Then a few seconds passed and exactly at the same time they both play bowed Saylor was grinning the entire time and Ripley went right to punching her in the face.




Don't mind Derek's lack of dress shoes... He had a wardrobe malfunction and his old dress shoes decided to bite the bullet in the middle of his down and back They held it together but we immediately got new shoes this weekend. Had to get these pictures of these two though! Cecilia and Saylor are a new team too and shes caught on so fast as a junior!

It always makes you wonder if they remember each other. I'd like to think they do but I know that's not usually the case especially with dams and offspring.

I'm so impressed with how far you guys have gone with her in such a short time!

For anyone who remembers, Saylor was the other pup we might have gotten when the breeder was still trying to decide between her and Phoebe to hold back.

Melissa has not ceased to be my ultimate favorite breeder in the States! And I'm super impressed by both her reds and blacks! I'll probably end up getting my first from Brazil or Argentina...cut down on complications...

Friday was a good day in UKC for team Ripley! They earned a Group 2 and 3 in a I think our largest Guardian Group so far at the All American Bulldog Club show in Shipshewana, IN!

Ripley also earned a new title, SPOT-ON (Socialized Pet Obedience Test - Outstanding Neighbor, equivalent to CGC) and she performed "Outstanding", the highest rating, at every station in the test!

I had plans to do precision coursing to finish up a title there after we tried it for the first time at Premier but Ripley had other plans and decided to not be done with her heat lol. She is done today, of course! It was a hot long day anyways and they played in AKC on Sat/Sun. No love there but Derek was the only owner handler out of 30 dobermans...

They got lots of compliments and we met up with our breeder's friend to get an hour of on the spot handling lessons which was incredibly invaluable. Lots of nitty gritty tips of how to stand and present yourself for each part of the process of your 3-5 min of shine. She said we have Ripley well trained! Now it's just down to Derek perfecting himself; theres way more to it than just looking nice and having your dog perform well. Like stand here with your back straight, or here with elbow bent at 90 degree, put your feet together, or grab Ripley's rear leg from underneath with palm out not over and palm in. It's a craft! I get it. It looks very nice and draws the judges eye to you saying, "look at my dog, isn't she beautiful???" Apparently, since Derek is a guy, and a tall guy, it already draws attention which they can use to their advantage but they have to make sure they look nice as a total package so that's what they are working on!

This was a few days before the shows. They have been doing sessions every night with her, teaching her to stand up and into her collar. Still a work in progress as she learns to build those muscles and muscle memory and to lean into the collar (she wants to give to pressure because of heeling training ) but already so much better in just a week.


I'll keep sharing the journey if people enjoy it... Cause this thread certainly is not all about winning either. Lots of failing and stumbling along the way, learning to be humble, and feeling way out of our league. But gradually, with hard work, getting there, seeing the small victories and just having fun trying something completely foreign with the best girl!

Same... I don't have the coordination nor the thick skin like my husband. I cry when I get mad lol can't control it! I could not even be sad...just emotional. I blame hormones! Good for you for getting out there and having fun!! Maybe one day I'll feel comfortable enough to play in UKC some. I know I'm a blink away from someone handing me a dog because they need the extra person.
