Remy’s Show Thread

Well, we finally did it! Yesterday Remy was Winners Dog for his first point! I don’t think anyone has been happier for a single point. 🤣

I always say how I’m terrible at hand stacking and making Remy look bad, but with the help of a friend and the photographer I was able to get a decent picture. Is it his most flattering picture? Nope, but I still had to buy it since it’s our first one!

We showed again this morning and he was reserve! I’m likely taking most (or all) of the summer off and we’ll get back to showing in August/September. I hate to take a long break but I’m typically very busy on weekends in the summer.

I’ll come back later to add some videos and post about the UKC show we did on Friday. View attachment 153821View attachment 153822
Congratulations! You deserve to feel proud and accomplished, single point or no. Something about a journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step.

Congratulations! He looks great and you've put a lot of work into presenting him well so it is paying off.

Thank you all! I appreciate all of your support of Remy & I! It feels nice for him to finally be recognized by the judge. Hopefully he can continue to pick up some more points once we start showing again!

Here is some video from yesterday. There is no audio (I muted it) since I originally uploaded this to TikTok and I’m not sure if it would be removed for copyright on YouTube.

Remy looks great, and you handle him very well! Thanks for sharing the good news, and video!

We got home a few hours ago from a long show weekend! There were 4 all breed shows and 2 Doberman specialties. Unfortunately Remy did not win any points, but he did go Reserve at one of the specialties and got a pretty rosette! Other than that, he only “won” his class everyday. There was supposed to be another dog in his class but they were absent each show, hence the “won” lol.

I did make a lot of little handling mistakes, so next time I’ll be more mindful of those (and practice in the meantime). I got some helpful tips from other Doberman people. Someone also said he could put on a little weight. I’m hoping improving those small things will help. I sometimes go back & forth on if I should continue showing him, but I’ve been encouraged by many people not to give up.

I’ll post some pictures for now and will come back with video later (if I remember 😅).

I wanted to get a picture with the rosette! I made sure to get one with the judge this time. Our win pictures are a work in progress, although I think this one might be a bit better than the first.

He looks awesome and I think his weight looks perfect for his structure too.
Thank you!

I thought so too but she said he was too rib-y. I do agree that from some angles his ribs are more visible, but I don’t know if it’s too much. I was looking at all the dogs after that and I felt that they were all in similar condition, some were just a touch heavier. I think Remy is a little wider (structurally) and has more bone than some of the dogs though.

When he first showed with the handler last year she said he needed to gain a few pounds. I put a little weight on him and he ended up looking too heavy. I’ve been doing conditioning exercises with him and very slightly reduced his food since it’s too hot outside to do our normal exercise. Now I guess he’s considered too thin for showing again? Although I’ll add that no judge has ever commented on his condition. I can never tell what the “ideal show weight” is supposed to be, especially because I hear conflicting things. Some people say they need to be in top condition, others say judges like them a little heavy…

I’ll attach some pictures and maybe people here can give some input. All of his ribs are easily felt so I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt to gain a pound or two. IMG_8318.webpIMG_8357.webpIMG_8390.webpAnother stack from a week ago. IMG_8036.webp

If you're both enjoying it, and learning, and you have the time and the money, doing anything with your dog is valuable ❤️
I do enjoy it! Although sometimes it might not seem that way 😅. I’m just a perfectionist so I’m a bit hard on myself at times.

I only wonder if we should continue showing since we don’t have a lot of luck with the judges. I know there is a lot I can improve on with my handling though, so I don’t think I would make any definite decision unless I knew for sure I was always presenting him to look his best (which I’m not currently). It’s not fair for me to present him badly then wonder why he didn’t win lol. I’ll keep showing for now at least so we can both improve!

I think his weight is perfect. I like to be able to feel the ribs, and if they move a certain way or take a deep breath, then they may show for a few seconds. His stack photo you can't see them at all. And remember, they should be judging on structure for reproducing, not if he's 3 pounds over or under a perfect weight or if he isn't handled perfectly. This is what kills me about the show ring, I wish they'd just judge the dog that would benefit the breed if bred.... Also, I love that his muscles are defined, I don't see that in a lot of the show dogs.

Show for fun & learning, and enjoy your "vacation" at choice spots when you go! LOL. The ribbons are bonuses. Proud of team Remy!

Here’s some video from the shows! I think we could have moved a little faster at times, but I made the mistake of wearing new shoes which gave me terrible blisters. After day 2 I had to go out and buy new ones, but even through bandaids and socks I could still feel the blisters 😵‍💫. I know of some things I can improve on next time, but overall I don’t think we looked too shabby lol.

I think his weight is perfect.
I thought so too. That’s the second person recently who made a comment about his weight, so it had me second guessing. The first person (just a family member, not “involved” with dogs) asked if the vet was concerned with his weight when I took him. I asked what they meant and they said “well he feels really bony when I pet him.” 🤷🏼‍♀️ Btw, the vet didn’t make any comment on it.

That should be true but sometimes it’s hard to say if it is… To be fair though, if he’s handled badly and that’s all they see, well then I’d expect to loose to a better handled dog even if I think they’re “worse”.

Thank you! I’ve been working on that with him. We can’t bike much anymore since it’s so hot, so I’ve been doing some canine conditioning exercises a few times a week to keep him in shape. Plus he loves doing it! As soon as I put the platforms down he runs and stands on them 😂

We always make a little vacation out of showing! This show was in an area I go to often and really like, so that was a bonus. I wish there were shows closer and more often that I could go to. The more I show, the more relaxed and confident I feel in what I’m doing. It’s just too much to have to drive hours and spent days in a hotel or airbnb every weekend. I’m thinking of doing another next month but I haven’t made up my mind yet. I said I would if I won something at this show lol.
Congrats! Well done! Remy looks awesome!
Thank you!

You have the bug, and you are young. Go and Do and Learn if you love it!

I agree....I think his weight looks perfect. It is a fine line with the weight on these guys; and also some judges just have 'preferences'. He looks like the standard to me! You guys BOTH look great! I give you a ton of credit doing conformation as an owner handler....it can be tough!

His weight looks fine. At most, a .5 lb to 1lb more to make him look his best for show but that's being nitpicky.

You've done so well learning how to handle in such a short time with a few shows under your belt. You will only continue to get better and better from here with your skill!

Is Andria planning to meet up again with you sometime?
