Remy’s Show Thread

We got home a few hours ago from a long show weekend! There were 4 all breed shows and 2 Doberman specialties. Unfortunately Remy did not win any points, but he did go Reserve at one of the specialties and got a pretty rosette! Other than that, he only “won” his class everyday. There was supposed to be another dog in his class but they were absent each show, hence the “won” lol.

I did make a lot of little handling mistakes, so next time I’ll be more mindful of those (and practice in the meantime). I got some helpful tips from other Doberman people. Someone also said he could put on a little weight. I’m hoping improving those small things will help. I sometimes go back & forth on if I should continue showing him, but I’ve been encouraged by many people not to give up.

I’ll post some pictures for now and will come back with video later (if I remember 😅).

I wanted to get a picture with the rosette! I made sure to get one with the judge this time. Our win pictures are a work in progress, although I think this one might be a bit better than the first.

You guys did great! I think his weight looks really good, for what it's worth. I have a lot of admiration for you guys and what you're doing together. Now I've handled Z a couple times in the ring, and I am learning what kind of effort goes into this. Much respect!

His weight looks fine. At most, a .5 lb to 1lb more to make him look his best for show but that's being nitpicky.
I thought so too so I’m glad I asked here for more opinions. I’ve never had a judge comment on his weight either, but then again they don’t really say much lol.
You've done so well learning how to handle in such a short time with a few shows under your belt. You will only continue to get better and better from here with your skill!
Thank you, I appreciate it! You know I’m hard on myself 😂
Is Andria planning to meet up again with you sometime?
No plans as of now. I don’t think she usually comes down south much (or at all). She was down my way to pick up a Papillon puppy and brought some dogs along to show. Awhile ago Melissa told me some shows they both planned on doing, but they were all pretty far from me. I think most were like 9-10 hours away. Maybe one day I’ll just make a trip out of it. I’d love to see everyone and maybe you guys too!

Mega Kudos to Team Remy esp for owner-handling!
Thank you!
Just out of curiousity- do Handlers get ribbons?
There are ribbons awarded for 1-4th in a class, reserve winners, winners dog/bitch and best of winners. This is for “class” dogs. For champions there is best of breed, best of breed owner handled, best of opposite sex, select dog/bitch. (Class dogs can win any of those but select as that’s for champions only). At specialties there are some more things like best veteran, best bred by, award of merit, etc…

If you meant the handler getting ribbons based off their handling skills, then no. Although that’s essentially how junior handling works.

Thank you! There’s a lot more that goes into it than people think. So many little things you need to do correctly.

Just for some example because I noticed myself doing a few small mistakes this week. Most of the time I did not stack him on the edge of the mat, but more towards the middle or back of it. This can make him look smaller when lined up with other dogs. I also kept my hand too low when gaiting. Usually you’d want to hold it a bit higher (like hip height) and further from your body. Nothing “terrible” but things I need to keep in mind for next time.

In the picture you can see he’s close to the ring gait. I should have stacked him on the other edge of the mat closer to the judge.IMG_8411.webp
Hand too low and close to my body here. This makes us bump into each other and likely restricts his gait a little too.IMG_8441.webpIt’s not perfect here but you can see it’s a bit higher and there’s more space between us since my arm is turned out. IMG_8440.webp

Just out of curiousity- do Handlers get ribbons?
Handlers do get ribbons if they are an owner handler and checked the box that they are. However if the BOB is an OH then by default they will win BOBOH (Best of Breed Owner Handled). Only the winners (BOB, Best Opposite, Best of Winners, Winners Dog, Winners Bitch) and specials (Champions) that are owner handled will get a chance to compete against one another again after the usual ribbons go out for points for the dogs.

Then the BOBOH will go on to owner handled groups and compete against all the other BOBOH from other breeds.

Then the Group 1 winner from that will compete against the other group 1 winners for a chance of Best in Show OH and Reserve BIS OH.

You get points for these wins as an OH and there is a owner handled ranking. That said, it is really hard to get OH points with an unfinished dog simply because you need to be in the winners ring over and over, and by default, the specials are always in the winners ring.

I thought he looked so sweet looking at the judge. She spent a lot of time feeling the dogs heads, looking at expression, etc…IMG_8591.webp
Zoomed in.

I don’t love this picture but it’s the only one where he’s stacked decently lol. IMG_8612.webp

He's an absolute knockout! You guys are doing all the things that are working for the two of you, and getting even more refined with each run you do.

He is very handsome and looks fantastic.
Lots of props goes to you…that’s some work and time you are putting in there.
Just have fun with it…I tend to wonder how much of that can be subjective politics?

I once took that beast Ragnar to a show and had a wonderful conversation with an older experienced lady sitting outside the ropes. She said you can have the best Doberman but if you don’t know the judges, you don’t stand a chance.

Good luck and keep smiling!

She said you can have the best Doberman but if you don’t know the judges, you don’t stand a chance.
Unfortunately that can be true with some judges in the dog world and the horse world. I know when I was into horse shows a lot of wining and dining took place the night before the show and sometimes those results showed through in the ring the next day.

I had an interesting conversation with one of the judges from our show a few weeks ago when I brought him back to the airport. Apparently he has done a lot of Doberman specialties over the years and he is going to tell it like it is. He mentioned one very prominent breeder that he walked out of the ring because they were being so complacent assuming they were going to win because of their reputation. He said you're going to have to present me the dog to show it's best side and you didn't do that so you're excused from this ring. He couldn't remember the name ATM but he said where they were from and what they looked like so I guessed and he said "yes, that's who it was". I almost fell over but complacency or assuming you are going to win has no place in the ring.
