Jasper at the vet - restless

I hope he’s feeling better today and you’ve all had a comfortable night.
Maybe he really did just over do it. I would just keep to casual walks for now. I’ll be thinking of you all. Take care.

Morning update:

We slept fine. No emergencies thank goodness. Poor thing was super hungry for breakfast. He only got one cup worth of rice and boiled chicken. Im waiting for him to poop. And I think I will wait a good hour two before offering water. He still has fluid to absorb so I am not sure he will even go for water.

Thanks for all your wishes guys. We all know how much these dogs mean to us. Im just thankful we acted quickly incase it was something more serious. Not out of woods 100% yet but I have a good feeling. Looks like just a walk today for exercise.

You can always ask your vet for some simethicone to reduce gas. Having two Dobermans that had GDV, it always panics me so I keep a bloat kit on hand.

I sure am glad he is okay. Sounds a bit like heat exhaustion causing issues with vomiting and extended neck scenarios.

Here it gets so hot and humid that it doesn’t take long for my two to get dehydrated.
If I am going to be doing heavy training and play I have started giving them sq LRS fluids before heading out and I bring the bag of fluids with us so I can rehydrate as needed. It prevents having to give them a lot of water that may cause vomiting and discomfort.
I do offer water in small amounts.

I keep Sucralfate on hand to crush up in their food to help ease the stomach.

If they get hot, cooling the underside of them (chest, abdomen) is important since that is where the major vessels are located along with their organs.

I have cooling mats in the truck but I also made a cooling underbelly harness that I strap on them using the Velcro strips to keep it in place. I only use the underbelly cooler when they are resting between breaks in training.

Maybe your vet would allow you to buy LRS bag with tubing set up and some 18ga needles to have on hand to use before going on a run in the park.

Salt water poisoning is the biggest issue I have with my two when swimming in the Gulf or Atlantic. They inadvertently ingest seawater when retrieving the ball from the ocean.

That’s interesting I never thought I would be able to give fluid like that at home. Im guessing you don’t give so much that they have a large camel back. It looks so strange. I wouldn’t be opposed to having something like that. Especially for our bike rides.

Its just crazy, it really didn’t seem hot. Only 70deg. Must be the temp change that did it.

I make their humps equal on each side. I give 250mls on right, then 250mls on left for a total of 500mls SQ before we leave the house. It absorbs pretty quick and doesn’t bother them. That will usually last them most of the day with them not wanting or needing much water PO.

Thank you! @Tropicalbri's Do you think I ahpuld wait until a bowl movement to give more food? He only ate 1 cup rice and chicken today. He usually eats three times a day equaling 2 3/4 cup total. He's very hungry I can tell.

I would offer food (small amt) every 3-4 hours. If he eats well and does not vomit then you know he is recovering well. I would do the bland diet for a couple days, then start adding in his regular food. You want to make sure he is getting the proper nutrients that his regular food provides.

Thanks a lot for your help. No vomiting. He is acting 100% normal as of now. Just hasn’t pooped lol...

He will probably poop this evening or in the morning. His gut motility may have slowed a bit in response to his gastritis.
Just keep an eye on it and what it looks like. Take a picture of it so you can compare to future ones.

We have had quite a few pets coming in sick with vomiting and diarrhea. We have diagnosed pancreatitis as the cause.

With the lockdown people are sharing their food with their pets. Unfortunately these foods are high in bad fat content. Fried foods, fatty foods will create gastric upset and in some pancreatitis.

FBO is another that we are seeing. This week alone we had 3 FBO surgeries. All survived thank goodness. The things we find are crazy. One dog ate a dish rag and dish sponge.
Another ate the kids LEGOs.
We removed a sewing needle with thread on it from a cat.
Another cat ate the leather straps off the owners purse.
It’s unbelievable what animals will ingest.

He had the smallest poop ever this morning. You'd think a Yorkie was in my yard, haha.

I am still giving him antacids per vets order. I think he is enjoying these plain meals, has to be the boiled chicken and beef. Im still limiting exercise because I'm a worry wart. He really hasn’t been drinking much water but I don’t think he is that thirsty yet after getting all those fluids.

Honestly, I think this was all due to him being hot and even though I withheld water after exercising, I think I should have waited even longer. Still, even in a cool house he was acting strange. Im glad I brought him in. I think the vets fluids really helped because he vomited the water he drank after the park.

I need to look into how to get the fluid bags so I can do this at home. Does it require a prescription?

If your vet won’t sell them to you, for whatever reason, then pm me and I will get some to you along with catheter setup and needles. I will send you a video as well of how to administer the fluids and how to check them for hydration.

You are amazing. Ill get back to you if needed. Im getting pretty nervous taking him out now. We were only playing fetch and its going to get much hotter outside come summer.

We spend more time sitting outside in the yard to help build up his tolerance. Short play sessions in the yard to gauge how he’s handling it. He moves to the shade as needed, so no harm done. It takes us a couple weeks to get him acclimated, though direct sunlight really drains his energy, and I do use that to my advantage once the summer heat starts lol.

That sounds good to me! As long as he is safe of course. Maybe ill start doing that. We had a fast rise in temp, doesn’t really affect us but Jasper definitely feels it.

Picking up a cooling mat may not be such a bad idea either. Anything to help bring his body temp down so he can have water sooner. Careful with any of those swamp cooling vests. They work by evaporation. If you live where it's humid, the vest will get heated up and do the opposite effect. I've used both before. Here in Northern IN it's not unusual for the humidity to be 70-80% in the summer... Feels like you are melting and permanently swimming in sweat lol. So we ditched the vest. Java loved water so it was easy to find somewhere to let her take a dip in to cool off. Paige, not so much as she thinks it's offensive to even get her ankles wet.

Any suggestions on which one? I may pick one up for my old man too.
I haven't bought one in years. I don't remember what kind I got, sorry. I picked up one of those self activating ones, probably from Petco or cleanrun.com.
