Breeder Referral in Texas

Can anyone recommend a companion pet breeder in Texas? I've been in touch with several breeders who are mostly show breeders with a potential stipulation to show the dog. I may be into that, I may not. The main focus is a companion family dog so I'm looking for a breeder of quality but maybe not to the show dog level as I'm not sure that I'd be up to that. I've got 1 show pup in my sights and would like another potential option.

Thanks for all the help!

In search of a healthy dog, I've been in touch with several breeders who are mostly show breeders that have a potential stipulation to show the dog. I may be into that, I may not. The main focus is a companion family dog so I'm looking for a breeder of quality but maybe not to the show dog level which is a significant time / cost consideration. I've got 1 show pup in my sights and would like another potential option. Also I've heard that show breeders keep the dog until 11-12 weeks. I'd like him a little earlier is possible..

Can anyone recommend a breeder in Texas? Theres an enormouse amount of BYB and then obvious well known show breeders. I am looking for a breeder in the middle.

Thanks for all the help!

With a "show breeder", not all pups in the litter will be show pups. Not saying it doesn't happen, but most will have pet pups to place in companion homes. Ears will likely be cropped by the breeder, healed and posting started.

Also I've heard that show breeders keep the dog until 11-12 weeks.

That's a pretty common practice for a couple of reasons. First that is usually about the time for ears to be healed and be ready to post. Something I highly recommend, especially if this is your first doberman.
Second, the longer pups are with Mom and siblings, the better. They learn some pretty important 'life skills' during that time.

All show litters have and are companion dogs. Maybe one or two will be show worthy. Keep that in mind.

Rhapsody would be a reputable breeder. There are a few others on the DPCA Breeder referral. Dont be afraid to look in surrounding states too.

I agree with Rits only a few puppies in a litter will be show quality so the rest will just be going to pet homes. Just be honest when inquiring about getting a puppy. Breeders need to find quality homes for the entire litter, just talk with them and you will find a breeder that meets your needs and is willing to work with you. Distance away should never be the determining factor. I would say reach out to some others from near by states. If the breeder is pushing you to show I would look else where, pushiness is a big turn off to me.

I was able to get mine from Linda George in Richmond, Texas.

Linda has been breeding show/conformation Dobermans for over 20yrs. She is highly knowledgeable and is definitely a proponent for the breed.

She knew that I was not looking to show and I had zero issues with papers. She gave me a binder with copies of history, Dam/Sire info, health testing info, AKC papers, etc...

This is a pict of DPCA Texas breeders. Her info is in the middle.

Two years later and I still talk with her.

Good luck and welcome from Louisiana.

I think getting them from a show breeder is just fine. And while getting them at and early age has its pros I think 10-12 weeks is great . Like others have said their ears will be healed which from my own experience with getting my 2 cropped after bringing them home makes for a rough couple weeks. And if youvare ok without cropping that’s a none issue. The other thing is I bought my pups for $800 and picked them up at 6 weeks and I can tell you that if your looking at a pup that is $1800-2000 it all comes out the same. Cause after buying both my pups I spent another $600-800 after the fact between finishing puppy shots, getting them cropped etc and my vet is cheap compared to most for a crop. Not to imply getting a puppy earlier is of financial concern. But I definitely think getting your pup with the ears healed and crate training already underway is a giant pro in my mind.
