Posting up the ears

Hi everyone , I’m really struggling posting my 15 week olds ears using the tampon method I’ve been shown. Has anyone got any easier methods ? Also has anyone used the apparatus that posts ears before ?

What sort of problems are you having? We could better answer your questions if we know what they are more specifically.

Here are a couple of tutorials that many of us use with the backer rod method.

Backer rod is really your best bet since the apparatus methods are mostly for right after they're cropped and before the stitches are out.

I personally prefer the tampon method, but know several that use the backer rod method successfully.

I have used both methods but the application is still the same. Back tape push down in as far as it will go and pull up on the ear while taping.

I find that he tries his hardest to scratch them off but also after a while he’s ok. Applying the posts is the hardest with him trying to wiggle around so much. Any ideas ? Also on that video it doesn’t use that middle tape that you use to hold the ears centre , can I add that or shall I just follow the video ?

Run the dog into the dirt. Get the dog exhausted physically and mentally, then do the ears.

This is a bridge to keep the ears up and centered in the early stages.

Some leave it on for weeks/months because it kinda helps keep the backer rods in but most folks stop using this when they notice their pups start gaining ear control. Problem with keeping in too long is that it tends to lead to the development of ear pockets and you really don’t want this.

Great advice here! I just wanted to say your boy is very handsome!! I hope the advice here is helping you feel better about posting. You will be a pro in no time and the results will be worth it!

Thank you so much for the kind words I appreciate it

I used the rolled paper towel method for Vex (who got a longer crop than I asked for but it worked out :) ) and it was the best I've done so far. Seems to soak up some of that ear goop that can happen and really doesn't rub puppy's ear "tube" to the head.

So far so good people his ears are holding up... they’ve been out of posts for around 8hours, I put the posts in overnight as a precaution. Enclosed is a picture of my dobies ears currently whilst being nearly 5 months
