I’m having trouble posting my male 4 month Doberman puppy ears.. I feel like his ears are to soft and doesn’t have enough cartilage.. we’ve been trying since he was 2 1/2 months using the tampon method and right now he just seems to be in a lot of pain he’s shaking whimpering.. what is a good age to start posting ?? He got almost all his adult teeth.. please help me

Welcome to Doberman Chat -

When were his ears cropped? There should be no pain at all. Make sure there is no raw skin or infections (any bad smell means infection!), that will definitely cause your puppy pain and distress. The adult teeth should still be coming in through his 5th month. Pictures would be great and could help us identify your problem and come up with answers for you!

What size tampons? I was using the light for too long - caused irritation , sores, and moved around causing my pup to shake her head too.

I moved up to regular and 2 taped together.

We cropped them In January.. no raw no skin infection.. ears don’t smell.. is it ok to keep cropping after his adult teeth come in??

Welcome from Minnesota!

You're getting to a critical age to keep them posted all the time, except for the little bit of time it takes to change them.

It shouldn't be bothering him at all so you might want to try the backer rod method and you can get by with using a lot less tape.
Here's one thread showing how to do it. How to Post Cropped Ears (Video)

I’m using the super tampons for posting. I have another Doberman and for some reason we were not having any issues with hers standing.. we did it three times and they stood right up..

How long before I take time out and what’s the time period I need to put them back??

I change mine out 3-5 days depending on how they look. I’m still posting at 7 months. I have tried to let them go , but after a day the tips get flippy 🫤 my breeder did suggest cottage cheese 2 tablespoons a day to harden cartilage. I do it does it work I have no clue lol. Worth a try.

Also, if they aren’t standing I would only let them out for 1/2 hour and repost. Teething for me ended at 5.5 months, but still my pups ears aren’t ready.

You’re lucky you only posted 3x? That’s awesome.

Maybe regular would be a better fit? I am not sure super seems like they’d be a bit big. @Ravenbird and @JanS know more than I do about this.

Good luck.

It was 30 years ago that I used the tampon method, then my next Doberman wast the one I have now & I used the backer rod as shown in the video that @JanS linked for you. Also the size of tampon or backer rod is dependent on going deep to hold it firm. Too big and it won't seat down in the ear canal, then wobble and come loose. Too small and it will go deep but then wobble around and cause sores and irritation. My pup was cropped at 8 1/2 weeks, I brought her home at 10 weeks after stitches were out and posted constantly until almost 6 months of age. Usually she was in posts with no more than 30 minutes out while her ears dried and aired out when I reposted every 3 days. It looks like you have a medium crop which usually is easier to stand, but I wouldn't start testing them until all his permanent teeth are all in and his canine teeth are of good size. The calcium that the body takes to grow that mouth full of teeth will slow down the ears stiffening enough to hold and that's why they'll look good at 4 months, the droop after a few weeks. That will set you back. And as you mentioned, the ear leather itself is different for each dog, some being faster to stay up than others. Best of luck, keep working at it, try some different methods/sizes so he's comfortable. It will be well worth your time and really, you are almost there!

thank you… I think the next post I’m going to try the backer rod.. he’s got some pretty big ears a lot bigger then my female for sure.. I’m gonna keep trying it does bother my other half that it’s not standing cause he paid for the crop but I love my baby no matter what lol

I leave the posts in for 4 or 5 days, then take them out, clean the ears and get the posts back in within 30 - 60 minutes. I would try 5/8" backer rod at this age, as long as the will go all the way into the canal.

You can see that our past boy fell asleep in my lap when I posted him. Doberman ear posting - improved method

I am using the backer rod method on my 5 month old, and it seems to work better than the tampon method, because you need to get that post down in the bell of the ear when there is no strength down there yet. Tampons just arn't long enough...(at least they weren't when I was using them :tonguewink:). My boy's teeth are all coming in, and his ears have strength, but I still post so they have a chance to stand firm. You'll see in the video and @JanS tutorial, that you don't need so much tape either ;)
