How to Post Cropped Ears (Video)

Very good info , and I think the video should help quite a bit with new owners posting.

When I was first learning how actually seeing it be done worked the best for me.

I read about it, but it didn't really make sense.
I didn't even know what backer rod was before dobes haha.

This is fantastic- Thanks so much for posting! Your girl, River, is beautiful. Can I ask what style ear crop it is she's sporting?

Very good! Definitely would have helped when I first started :) Reading step by step was great, but it was still a definite learning experience! Did you ever put neosporin or anything on the bottom of the post that goes in the ear canal?

Thank you all! I was hoping this would be helpful. I know I would have appreciated something like this when I started. Same reason I made my nail grinding video. I've never put Neosporin on the end of the post, only on gauze when there was a sore that needed to be protected so it could heal while posted.

River's length is between a medium and a show cut. Dobs4ever works with her vet very closely on each crop and does this length so it is easy to post but also acceptable in the show ring.

Her ears are gorgeous, and I can appreciate working with the vet to make sure they are easy to post. Did you get River from Dobs4ever? My apologies, I'm new so I don't know who is who yet. ;)

This is going to help me tons when I get my Doberman, Ace. I do have a question though. I was told cropping is to be done around 10-12 weeks, is that correct? I also was told that I needed to wait until the ears are fully healed to post them, is that correct also? :dobe: :)

You are correct on both parts, but most usually like to get it done at around 10 weeks since 12 is starting to push the upper age limits.

Jess, great video (I swear I posted this yesterday ;), but the only thing I would suggest is getting a pair of regular bandage scissors with the one flat blunt side to avoid nicking them in case they jerk or something right when you're trying to get it under the tape. You can find them for a very reasonable price at most places that sell either first aid supplies or horse supplies.

Thank you for your time and replying. I will be bringing him to my vet at 10 weeks to get his ears done. I really like River's crop, does she have a medium show crop?

I believe she did say it's a medium show crop and it is a nice length.

I don't know if you caught it, but we have a photo thread of everyone's different crop styles and if your vet will do custom crops, many of us find one we really like and print out some photos to bring to the vet so there is no mis-communication.

I really like these crops (see the pictures below). I am assuming they are a medium or medium show crop. I will definitely be taking in a printed picture of the crop I like! Thanks for your time and replying! :)

It looks to me like the first one is a show crop and the second one is a medium crop.

Well it depends on how much time you want to put into posting the ears. The show crops take a long, long time to get to stand correctly and if you've never done it before it can be a bit of a challenge - in fact some vets won't even consider a show crop unless you have experience with posting. The second one has more bell and being that it's only a medium crop, it would be much easier to get them standing correctly. As an example, Della has a medium crop and her's were done at 4 months, but Albert has the long show crop and I was still posting him after he was a year old. :)

Thank you so much, and I believe I will be doing the medium crop then!! I am so excited!!

Responsible breeders will have their pups cropped around 7 - 8 weeks old so that they are fully healed and out of stitches before they go home at 9 - 10 weeks. This ensures they get proper care and that you aren't putting too much on the plate of a new owner. And yes, they should be fully healed and stitches out before posting. You don't want to put tape on stitches if you can help it.

Thanks Jan! I did mention those in the video but I don't have a pair of my own, yet. I definitely want to get them before the next pup.

River's crop would technically be between a medium and a show crop. Her breeder worked with the vet to get the perfect crop length and style for her.
