Training or abuse?

I don't know if you need to have Twitter to see this share but I really would like to know your thoughts on this. I was rather upset watching this. Angry upset. I can't imagine that this is training. It borders on abuse to me. Even if you say I'm wrong, and it training, It still makes me mad! And if I was there I would have said something to that guy!

The caption or comment under it said, I hope this TSA is fired after this.

That dog is mad stressed. I don't know how he's supposed to work on detecting anything when he's so stressed and confused about his handler's behavior. His behavior is going to possibly forever ruin that dog from the work he's been trained to do. I wonder if this TSA agent isn't a trained K9 handler.

I hope he is fired too since that's not how they're trained. I've seen them first hand quite a few times and this isn't normal.

Thank you. Brings tears to my eyes to know that you all feel the same! I just knew this didn't seem right. And the dog seemed so confused. It was so sad to watch. He kept looking at the guy kind of like, what the hell is wrong with you? what the hell do you want?? And yet he was still kind of Happy. Because dogs want to please. Dogs are wonderful creatures and he's mistreating this one.

And I'm just thinking. Why are all the people walking by and nobody's saying anything? I know some aren't even paying attention. But I'm telling you, if I was there I would have confronted him. Maybe people are afraid because he is somebody in "authority". I would have wanted to know what the hell he was doing and if he told me to F off, I would go to his supervisor!

I had to watch it a couple times but I do think this is abuse and not training. Between he and the dog, early on in the clip, the dog was like centrifugal force at the end of its leash turned around and later on the dog had its front feet suspended off the ground by it's collar. I'll stop walking when I think Katyusha isn't respectful of me. Maybe a tug (from the wrist is enough) if she still won't turn her focus to me. Early on in leash training it worked well to go in the closely placed clothing racks of the farm stores and she would get a little ahead of me and maybe turn right, then I decided to go left but it never looked or felt like what I watched here. I get the direction change thing but it looked to me like this guy just had to be alpha somewhere and this is the only way he could find to feel that way.

Thanks for this @JanS . Not only useful for this conversation but it gives me something to dig into during my next slow day at work. Looks like our government is taking the work dogs can do for us very seriously!

I did the same thing. Watched it a couple of times. And like you, that particular turn around with the dog off its feet, convinced me this was not training. The guy looks like he's just angry!

Stuff like this should be reported. Hope Lackland people got wind of it. They're the ones who put all the time & effort into making dogs the best & happiest workers and they DO wash the ones that don't make the grade. For them to see their canines be sent off to a job and be mishandled would get the ball rolling fast & hard.

I can't even figure out what the handler want the dog to do. I'm assuming loose-leash and paying enough attention to stay with the handler on about turns, but that is so freaking basic I can't imagine this dog is ready for airport traffic without that behavior already. @Jan - are the only dogs that work in USA airports trained by Lackland? I'll assume this is a US airport. @MyBuddy, is any info available where this video was taken?

@Jan - are the only dogs that work in USA airports trained by Lackland?

As far as I know they are. Just like all of us had to train for our jobs in GA, then come back to our respective airports.
The dogs at MSP are very calm and well trained and the handler praises the heck out of them when they hit on something.
