Training never ends!

Local brewery just opened and they allow dogs! The only other dog that was there belonged to the owners and thankfully I checked the place out before bringing Asha in. The dog was off leash because they'd just opened and I could tell that he was a very forward dog. I told them I'd brought my dog but I didn't think she'd do well with their dog off leash. The owner was cheerful about it and leashed him up, said he usually is leashed and behind the counter, but they'd just opened about 15 minutes earlier. But I was right. This dog could stare a hole into a wall. It's a dominance thing and Asha grumbled but stayed put and the other dog behaved but it took a good 15 minutes for them to both chill and give it up. I didn't let Asha look (stare) at him until they both settled. Then I let her watch and observe him because her body language relaxed. Reckless was there too, but because Reckless doesn't walk into a place thinking she has to own it, the dog never even looked at her, much less stared & dared. Good reminder that no matter how good my dog behaves she's still the same dog underneath it all.

And the beer was really good - I haven't had home brewed in years and the difference is amazing.

Good work on knowing your girl but still working her through it properly! (And you aren't wrong about that dog LOL)

Honestly, she's totally comfortable with dogs that mind their own business, she never gives hard stares anymore, UNLESS another dog starts it. I knew walking in that place without her that this dog was going to size her up. And he was very human friendly, didn't give off any bad vibes to any people, but there was just something about him that I knew was going to challenge Asha. He was so much like her, LOL. We were there with other friends, stayed about an hour and Asha even kept her down stay without whining when I went to the restroom.

Oh trust me, I understand! Ripley and Stavros are just the same and would have had a problem with it too. And other breeds seem to LOVE to stare at dobermans 😅

I love finding new, dog friendly places! Seems like Asha did great!

I always say the training never ends too. I’ve had someone say “what are you training for now?”, sort of in a negative tone. I said that he’ll continue to be trained for the rest of his life, that there’s always something to do and he enjoys it… Of course their dog only knows sit and will only do it for food, if you’re lucky 😂.

If we're both awake, she's learning something. LOL. Not actively training, but if I ignore barking she's learning it's ok to bark until I say not to. I realized during her first year how much training these dogs get from us without us even knowing! Not in a good way, either. Once I learned that every little inch I gave became a permission slip to Asha, I became way more conscious of what I was doing. Just like making the decision to check out the brewery without her on leash and make my decision from there.. If I'd walked in with her on leash and that dog ran up to her off leash "being friendly" she probably would have had an outburst. I could control it quickly, but the point is to try to never let it happen.

I do too! I rarely go out to eat, much less go all the way to town to have one beer. But my friends invited us and said bring the dogs so that's the reason I got talked into it. Asha did do great - and we'll go back and she'll know it was OK with no drama.

Some Dobermans are quite territorial and they really want to assert themselves.

I like to think other dogs can recognize how attractive Dobermans are and so they cannot help but look 😜

I've had that too, always with that underlying tone too.

And I swear that dog is looking into my soul 👀
Right? He stared at Asha, standing up like that for way too long. I was dropping kibble on Ashas little mat, one here, one there, but between every bit she'd try to glance up and want to grumble at him. He finally gave it up because I wouldn't let Asha look at him.
